"The dog lived in the garden, but the cat, who was smarter, lived inside the house" is an example of
Answer: B
It is a complex compound sentence.
The sentence has two independent clauses joined by the coordinating conjunction 'but': 'The dog lived in the garden' and 'the cat lived inside the house'. The second also contains a dependent relative clause, 'who was smarter'. Two or more independent clauses plus at least one dependent clause make a compound-complex sentence.
A simple sentence has one clause. A compound sentence would have the two independent clauses but no dependent clause, and a complex sentence one independent clause with a dependent clause, so neither describes all of this sentence.
