In a transformer the number of turns per volt is 8. The primary voltage is 110 V. Find the primary and secondary turns of wire if secondary voltage is to be 25 volts.
Answer: A
The number of turns per volt is 8, so the primary of 110 V needs 110 x 8 = 880 turns and the secondary of 25 V needs 25 x 8 = 200 turns. So the primary has 880 turns and the secondary has 200 turns, option (A). The options with 440 and 100 turns correspond to 4 turns per volt, and those with 100 and 440 or 200 and 880 put the numbers the wrong way round, as the primary has the higher voltage and needs more turns. The turns per volt is the same for the primary and secondary of an ideal transformer, which is why the number of turns is in proportion to the voltage.
