Which one of the following is the appropriate tri-axial test to assess the immediate stability of an unloading problem, such as an excavation of clay slope ?
Answer: C
The appropriate test is the UU test.
Immediate (short-term) stability of a clay excavation is governed by undrained conditions: the clay has no time to drain while it is being excavated. The unconsolidated undrained triaxial test gives the undrained shear strength for exactly that case, which is why it is used for end-of-construction analysis.
The CD test gives drained parameters for long-term stability, and the CU test is used where the soil consolidates first and then fails quickly, as in rapid drawdown. 'Unconsolidated drained' is not a standard triaxial test.
