Assertion (A): A finer cement gains strength more quickly at early ages.
Reason (R): A greater surface area is exposed to water for hydration to act upon.
Answer: A
Both are true and the reason gives the mechanism: hydration proceeds at the particle surface, so dividing the same mass into smaller particles multiplies the area at which the reaction can begin. Fineness is therefore one of the main levers on early strength.
