Electrodes for EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining)
Answer: B
EDM electrodes are made of Graphite.
In electrical discharge machining, sparks between the electrode (tool) and the work erode the work. A good electrode must conduct well, machine easily to complex shapes and wear slowly. Graphite meets all three: it has a very high sublimation temperature, so it wears little, and it is easy to shape. Copper and copper-tungsten are the other common electrode materials.
Iron and steel wear quickly and give unstable machining. Silver conducts well but is too costly and soft for routine electrodes.
