A binary feed of 60 mole per cent A is flashed so that half the feed vaporises. If the vapour is 75 per cent A, what is the liquid composition?
Answer: B
Correct answer: 45 per cent A
An overall balance on A across the flash, with equal vapour and liquid, gives \[ 0.75 \times 0.5 + x \times 0.5 = 0.60, \qquad 0.375 + 0.5x = 0.60, \qquad x = 0.45. \] The check is that the feed composition must lie between the two products, and 0.45 and 0.75 straddle 0.60 as they should - which is what rules out the 50 per cent offered.
