The service most directly supported by virtualization is Infrastructure as a service (IaaS).
IaaS providers such as Amazon EC2 rent out virtual machines, virtual storage and virtual networks. Hypervisors make it possible to slice physical servers into many isolated virtual machines that customers can create, resize and delete on demand, so virtualization is the core technology of IaaS.
PaaS offers a development and runtime platform and SaaS offers finished applications; both may run on virtualized infrastructure, but what they deliver is a platform or software, not virtualized hardware. Communication as a service delivers voice and messaging.
