Which typical magnitude does relative vorticity have in a mid-latitude cyclone?
Answer: C
A wind of 10 metres per second varying over a thousand kilometres gives a shear of \( 10^{-5} \) per second, which is the characteristic relative vorticity of a synoptic system. That is about a tenth of the Coriolis parameter, which is another way of stating that the Rossby number is small. Tornadoes reach \( 10^{-1} \) per second and dust devils more, so the range across atmospheric phenomena spans several orders of magnitude. Working one numerical case through both cases side by side fixes the distinction better than any rule of thumb.
