Which equation governs the time evolution of relative vorticity?
Answer: A
Taking the curl of the horizontal momentum equation eliminates the pressure gradient force in a barotropic fluid and yields the vorticity equation, whose terms are advection, divergence, tilting and the solenoidal term. It is a prognostic equation for the vorticity following the flow. The omega equation is diagnostic and derived partly from it, while continuity and thermodynamics are separate members of the governing set. Working one numerical case through both cases side by side fixes the distinction better than any rule of thumb.
