Which effect does horizontal convergence have on absolute vorticity?
Answer: C
Convergence shrinks the area of a fluid column while conserving its circulation, so the vorticity within it increases, which is the fluid dynamical version of a skater pulling in their arms. This stretching term is how a weak circulation intensifies into a cyclone. Divergence does the opposite. The effect is proportional to the existing absolute vorticity, so a column with zero absolute vorticity gains none from convergence alone. Reading the definition literally, rather than recalling a formula, is the reliable route through questions of this shape.
