Which vorticity structure characterises a mature tropical cyclone?
Answer: C
The vorticity of a mature hurricane is concentrated in a core only a few tens of kilometres across, reaching values of order \( 10^{-2} \) per second, some three orders of magnitude above synoptic values. The outflow aloft is anticyclonic but the low level circulation is strongly cyclonic. Vorticity rings do appear transiently during eyewall replacement but are not the characteristic steady structure. Reading the definition literally, rather than recalling a formula, is the reliable route through questions of this shape.
