Which chart field do forecasters examine for signs of development?

Positive vorticity advection at 500 hectopascals is one of the two classical forcing terms in the omega equation, so a chart of absolute vorticity with the wind overlaid shows immediately where ascent is being forced. Surface pressure shows the existing systems rather than the forcing for change, and temperature and moisture fields address the thermodynamic environment rather than the dynamical forcing. Working one numerical case through both cases side by side fixes the distinction better than any rule of thumb.
