A 500 hectopascal chart shows a vorticity maximum approaching a surface low from the west.
What is the likely development?
Answer: A
Positive vorticity advection ahead of the maximum forces ascent and upper divergence, which removes mass from the column and deepens the surface low beneath. This is the classical signature of development and the reason vorticity charts are examined routinely. Systems are steered by the flow aloft and therefore move eastward with it, so the westward option contradicts basic synoptic behaviour. Reading the definition literally, rather than recalling a formula, is the reliable route through questions of this shape.
