The sum of relative and planetary vorticity is called the _____ vorticity.
Answer: C
Absolute vorticity is the vorticity as seen from an inertial frame and is conserved for frictionless barotropic non-divergent flow. Potential vorticity divides it by depth or multiplies by a stratification factor to obtain a quantity conserved under far more general conditions. Shear vorticity is one of the two natural coordinate contributions, and geostrophic vorticity is the curl of the balanced rather than the actual wind. Checking the units of each quantity catches a wrong formula before the arithmetic begins.
