Lev Vygotsky believed that development :
Answer: D
Vygotsky believed that development results directly from social interaction.
In Vygotsky's sociocultural theory, higher mental functions first appear between people, in interaction with parents, teachers and more capable peers, and are then internalised by the child. Language, culture and guided participation in the zone of proximal development drive cognitive growth.
Seeing development as discontinuous stages is closer to Piaget. Describing it as the unfolding of a genetic programme, or as a direct result of maturation, is the maturationist view associated with Arnold Gesell, which gives little weight to social interaction.
