According to Vygotsky's theory of learning and development, which of the following is an example of scaffolding ?
Answer: A
Scaffolding is breaking a task down into smaller steps and providing support as needed.
Scaffolding is the temporary, adjustable help a more knowledgeable person gives a learner to complete a task within the learner's zone of proximal development. The adult or peer simplifies the task, models, prompts and gives hints, then withdraws the support step by step as the learner becomes able to manage alone.
A grade as motivation is an external reward, not support for doing the task. Setting a reading assignment and asking the student to work independently offers no help at all. Demonstrating once and leaving the learner to master the skill alone gives no graded, responsive support, so it is not scaffolding either.
