“Minamata” disease in Japan is caused by the entry of ____________ in the food chain.
Answer: B
Minamata disease was caused by salt of mercury.
From the 1950s, a chemical factory at Minamata in Japan discharged mercury compounds into the bay, where they were converted into methylmercury. This accumulated in fish and shellfish and, through the food chain, poisoned the people who ate them, damaging the nervous system.
Cadmium caused Itai-itai disease in Japan, and arsenic, copper and iron salts are not linked to Minamata.
