Which one of the following statements is not true for hydropower generated from river dams?
Answer: A
The statement that is not true is 'Dams encourage sustainable growth'.
Large dams flood forests and farmland, alter river ecosystems, trap silt and displace communities, so they are widely criticised as not sustainable, even though the electricity itself is renewable.
The other statements are accepted as true: generating hydropower does not burn fuel, so it does not pollute air or water in operation; hydropower facilities can have large environmental impacts; and big dams have displaced many indigenous and river-dependent people, as the Narmada controversy showed.
