Discussion
Consider the following statements about linear wave theory.
1. It assumes an inviscid, incompressible and irrotational fluid.
2. It linearises the free surface boundary conditions.
3. It remains accurate for waves near the point of breaking.
Answer: B
The first two are correct and are the standard assumptions. The third fails badly, since near breaking the wave is strongly non-linear and higher order theories are required instead. Stokes and cnoidal theories extend the range considerably.
