Discussion
Consider the following statements about mass properties:
1. They include centre of gravity and moments of inertia as well as mass.
2. Moments of inertia are needed for handling and flutter analysis.
3. They can only be measured, not estimated.
Which of the statements given above is or are correct?
Answer: A
Correct answer: 1 and 2 only
Statements 1 and 2 are correct: mass properties comprise mass, centre of gravity and the moments and products of inertia, and the inertias feed handling qualities and flutter analysis. Statement 3 is false, and would make aircraft design impossible - inertias are calculated from the mass distribution long before anything exists to swing, and measurement on the finished article is a check rather than the source.
