Which one of the following , gives the correct decreasing order of the densities of a soil sample ?
Answer: D
The decreasing order is Saturated, Bulk, Dry, Submerged.
The saturated density is highest because every void is full of water. The bulk density of a partially saturated soil is lower, since some voids hold only air. The dry density is lower again, with no water at all. The submerged density is lowest because buoyancy removes the weight of an equal volume of water from the solids.
Typical figures show the order: about 20 kN/m3 saturated, 18 bulk, 16 dry and 10 submerged. The other options all put the submerged density above the dry density, which is the trap.
