Which is the first country to commence competitive examination in civil services ?
Answer: A
The first country to hold competitive civil service examinations was China.
Imperial China selected its officials through written examinations from the Sui dynasty (around 605 CE) until 1905. The system influenced Western reformers centuries later.
Britain adopted open competitive examination for its civil service after the Northcote-Trevelyan Report of 1854, and the Indian Civil Service examination began in 1855. The United States followed after the Pendleton Act of 1883. All are much later than China.
