Construction Planning and Management [ Question No: 1 To 8 ] :
The probability distribution taken to represent completion time in PERT analysis is:
Your Answer : (Not Answered)
Correct Answer : C
PERT represents activity completion time by a Beta distribution.
PERT assumes each activity time follows a beta distribution, which is bounded by the optimistic and pessimistic times and can be skewed either way. That assumption is what gives the formulas te = (to + 4tm + tp)/6 and σ = (tp - to)/6.
The normal distribution is the trap: it is used for the project completion time, which by the central limit theorem is roughly normal when many activities are added, not for a single activity. Gamma and log-normal are not the PERT assumption.
The optimistic time, most likely time and pessimistic time estimates of an activity are 5, 10 and 21 days respectively. What are the expected time and standard deviation?
Your Answer : (Not Answered)
Correct Answer : B
The expected time is 11 days and the standard deviation 2.67 days: 11, 2.67.
PERT uses the beta-distribution estimates:
\[ \begin{aligned} t_e &= \frac{t_o + 4t_m + t_p}{6} = \frac{5 + 40 + 21}{6} = 11 \\ \sigma &= \frac{t_p - t_o}{6} = \frac{21 - 5}{6} = 2.67 \end{aligned} \]
The variance would be \(2.67^2 = 7.1\). 12, 3.67 and 11, 4.67 misplace the arithmetic, and 10, 16.27 takes the most likely time as the expected time.
Identify, on the basis of application, whether the following statements regarding quality measures in the construction industry are true/false.
1. Quality control (QC) tools are used at the project level and deal with conformance to the plans and specs through submittals, mock-ups, shop drawings, inspections, and testing.
2. Quality assurance (QA) tools are used at the process level and deal with policies and procedures associated with hiring, training, safety, subcontracting, and procurement.
Your Answer : (Not Answered)
Correct Answer : D
Both statements are true. Quality control tools work at the project level and check that the work conforms to the plans and specifications, through submittals, mock-ups, shop drawings, inspections and testing. Quality assurance tools work at the process level, setting policies and procedures for how the work is organised (hiring, training, safety, subcontracting and procurement) so that quality is built in. So the option that calls both statements true is right, and the others that call one or both false are not.
Identify whether the following statements with reference to project planning methods are true/false.
1. Gantt charts are not very good at showing the impact that a delay in one activity might have on another activity or the overall duration of the project.
2. Network diagrams show any delay in the project activity and its impact on the other or overall duration of the project.
Your Answer : (Not Answered)
Correct Answer : C
Both statements are true. A Gantt chart shows the activities as bars against time, but it does not show clearly how the activities depend on each other, so it does not show well how a delay in one activity affects another activity or the total duration. Network diagrams (such as PERT and CPM) join the activities by their dependencies, and so show the effect of any delay on the activities that follow it and on the project duration. The options that call either statement false are rejected.
Which of the following statements is correct about financial management?
A. The objective of financial management is profit maximisation.
B. The objective of financial management is wealth maximisation.
Your Answer : (Not Answered)
Correct Answer : C
Both statements are taken as correct in the key. The traditional objective of financial management is profit maximisation, that is, making the organisation's earnings as large as possible. The modern objective, which is broader because it also considers risk, timing of returns and the owners' interest, is wealth maximisation (the maximising of the value of the firm). So the first and second statements are both given as correct by the body and neither is incorrect.
The critical path method is a/an ______ oriented technique, which is used in project management.
Your Answer : (Not Answered)
Correct Answer : A
The critical path method (CPM) is an activity-oriented technique: the network is drawn with arrows representing the activities, and the critical path is the longest chain of activities. PERT, in contrast, is an event-oriented technique, in which the nodes are events and the times are probabilistic. CPM is not oriented to time or to resource as such, although it gives time results (the project duration and the float), and resource levelling is a later step.
Which Act/law was passed by the government of India to protect the victims of accidents and their families from hardships out of and in the course of employment?
Your Answer : (Not Answered)
Correct Answer : B
The Workmen's Compensation Act, 1923 (now the Employees' Compensation Act) provides for compensation to workers, or to their families, for injury, disease or death arising out of and in the course of employment. The Minimum Wages Act fixes wage rates, the Contract Labour law of 1970 regulates the engagement of contract workers, and the Health and Safety at Work Act, 1974 is a law of the United Kingdom, not an act passed by the government of India.
As per Part 4 of the National Building Code of India (2016), which of the following types of buildings are classified as Group-B buildings?
Your Answer : (Not Answered)
Correct Answer : D
In Part 4 of the National Building Code of India (2016) buildings are grouped by occupancy: Group A residential, Group B educational, Group C institutional, Group D assembly, Group E business, Group F mercantile, Group G industrial, Group H storage and Group J hazardous. Group B is therefore educational buildings. Assembly (Group D), business (Group E) and storage (Group H) buildings belong to the other groups.
