Mohammed Jamshed Khan replaced the ATM card in his wallet and counted the crisp new notes he’d just withdrawn from the machine, “₹6,000? This can’t
be right!” thought the young Mumbai civil contractor. He counted again. It was indeed ₹6,000. “All I’d asked for was ₹1,200”, Khan told his friend Faisal
Mukhi who was standing nearby.

“You pressed the wrong buttons, silly.”, said Mukhi.

“No way!” exclaimed Khan as he pushed his card back in again, keyed in his numeric password and asked for ₹1000. Beep, click………… whirr, beep! Out
popped ₹5000 and a little transaction slip that read WITHDRAWAL ₹1000.

It seemed certain that the ATM was giving away 500-rupee notes instead of hundreds. “May be something’s wrong with your card”, Mukhi told Khan, “let
me try mine”. Mukhi’s balance was low –only ₹1300. He pushed his card in and asked for ₹1000. The machine spat out ₹5000.

The probability of an ATM overpaying is virtually nil. But here they were, two buddies with ₹26,000 between them – ₹20,800 of it free money.

There were no other customers in sight on that warm July afternoon. And they could have kept on going. Instead, Khan and Mukhi went outside the ATM’S
enclosure and summoned the guard on duty. “The machine’s all mixed up.” They told him.

“Don’t let anybody near this place,” they told the guard as they hopped into an auto-rickshaw and sped off with all the money.

It looked like a daylight robbery – in reverse. For they drove two kilometers, to the nearest branch of the bank that owned the ATM, placed the cash –
₹28,500 – on the bank manager’s desk and complained about their faulty machine.

Achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions in the UK by the next thirty years is a massive challenge. It will mainly be achieved through cutting
emissions from fossil fuels. This will require rapid deep transformation across the energy system of the UK. There are two main ways we can cut
emissions from fossil fuels. These ways are elimination and decarbonisation. Elimination means that low carbon energy sources such as renewables
hydrogen gas from low carbon sources and nuclear power replace fossil fuels. This process requires fuel upgrading systems and equipment to run on
these new fuels such as moving from petrol to electric cars. The two largest domains where fuel switching is required are vehicles and building heating.
On the other hand decarbonisation requires capturing emissions as they are produced. This technology called carbon capture and use or storage is
generally done by chemically compressing carbon dioxide into a liquid and either storing it or using it to make synthetic fuels chemicals and building
materials. Additionally other negative emissions technologies that take greenhouse gases out of the air are being developed but so far none are ready
for mass deployment. Several plans for getting the UK to reach net zero emissions have been made public. Among the many challenges that these plans

pose only two stand out. Sorting out mass fuel switching and deploying complex new technologies related to emissions reduction. Mass fuel switching
could cause problems if new equipment is initially too scarce unreliable or more expensive to buy or run than existing equipment. Additionally
actually meeting growing demand for low carbon energy will mean significantly expanding the current electricity generation capacity of the country.
Ensuring there are no delays in providing this power to citizens will be crucial. Although these problems may only occur for a short time while the low
carbon transition takes place they would still require rapid responses from those governing the transition to avoid causing social unrest. Most energy
transition plans also rely at least partly on some new complex technologies being added to our roster to help generate greener energy. These include
carbon capture and storage as well as advanced nuclear power such as small modular reactors and green hydrogen produced using low carbon
electricity. The speed with which these inventions are adopted in both industry and society will have to increase if we are to meet climate goals. My
own research into the complexity of energy transition shows that strong political leadership is needed to keep transitions on track. Leaders should not
just set ambitious energy efficiency goals. They must also support energy efficiency improvement programmes like retrofitting houses encourage
investment in energy technology research and help local governments to make the transition easier for the public. Making a successful transition to
low carbon energy would not just help the UK meet its net zero targets and climate obligations. Other benefits could include better local air quality
less energy poverty better national energy security and more reliable transport. Social movements could play an important during this transition. This
might look like supporting people vulnerable to fuel poverty including the elderly renters and those living in rural areas through the fuel switching
process. Or it could involve developing new businesses to provide essential services like heating and transport in more efficient sustainable ways.

चल रहा है। टेलीफोन का प्रयोग बातचीत करने के लिए किया जाता था। यह तारों से जुडा रहता था। आज टेलीफोन की जगह मोबाइल फोन ने ले ली है। तथा
बातचीत करने और सूचना देने के लिए मोबाइल एक उपयोगी यंत्र है। इसमें कोई तार नहीं होता। आवाज तरं गों के प्रेषण और ग्रहण के जरिये ही मोबाइल अपना
काम करता है। मोबाइल एक उपयोगी यंत्र है। यह बेहद छोटा होता है। इसको जेब में रखा जा सकता है अथवा हाथ में पकडा जा सकता है। इसमें लगी हुई सिम इस
यंत्र के संचालन में अहम भूमिका अदा करती है। अपनी बात दू सरे तक पहुंचाने तथा उसकी बात सुनने में यह यंत्र हमारी सहायता करता है। बेहद छोटा और कम
भार का होने के कारण इसको अपने पास रखना और एक जगह से दू सरी जगह तक लाना ले जाना बहुत आसान है। अब तो मोबाइल अनेक भूमिकाएं निभा रहा है।
नयी नयी ऐप की सहायता से मोबाइल बहुत काम आसानी से कर रहा है। ई बैंकिं ग और आनलाइन शापिंग और फोटो लेना तथा भेजना और डिजिटल इंडिया के
सपने को साकार करने में मोबाइल एक जरूरी सहायक बन गया। यह संचार क्रांति का युग है। इस क्रांति में मोबाइल का अहम योगदान है। आज हम किसी दू र के
इंसान से बहुत कम समय में बात कर सकते हैं। कु छ समय पहले तक मोबाइल का उपयोग करने वालों की आबादी बहुत कम थी। अब एक बडी आबादी में लोग
इसका प्रयोग करते हैं। संचार उपग्रहों के अंतरिक्ष में होने से इस क्षेत्र में काम कु शलता की बहुत बढोतरी हुई है। संचार के क्षेत्र में काम कर रही कं पनियों की सेवाएं
भी सुधार रही हैं। मोबाइल हमारी एक जरूरत बन गया है। हर एक चीज से कु छ लाभ होता है तो कु छ हानि भी होता है। एक दू सरे को एक साथजोडना मोबाइल का
सबसे बडा लाभ है। मोबाइल का अधिक समय तक प्रयोग करने से यह हमारी आंखे तथा समय दोनों खराब करता है। मोबाइल गेम तथा चेटिंग में समय तथा धन
दोनों ही खराब होते हैं। मोबाइल अनेक प्रकार के अपराधों का जनक और सहायक भी बन गया है। मोबाइल का प्रयोग सोच समझकर किया जाना चाहिए। इस यंत्र
की उपयोगिता आपस में बातचीत करने में ही है। मोबाइल पर संगीत सुनना और मूवी देखना और चेटिंग करना आदि किसी भी प्रकार प्रशंसनीय नहीं है। यदि इनसे
बचा जाये तो मोबाइल एक उपयोगी उपकरण है। मोबाइल फोन ने हमारी जिंदगी को बहुत आसान बना दिया है। अब हम किसी भी इंसान से किसी भी समय पर
कु छ ही पल में बात कर सकते हैं और देख भी सकते हैं। मोबाइल फोन साइज में इतना छोटा होता है कि वह आराम से हमारे जेब या हमारी जींस में आ जाता है और
हम उसे कहीं भी ले जा सकते हैं। अगर हम कहीं दू र देश में जा रहे हैं तो भी हमें यह चिंता करने की जरूरत नहीं कि हम अपने घर वालों से और परिजनों से बात
कै से करें गे।
