Rosalind Franklin
(1920 –1958)

Rosalind Franklin was a winner from an early age, doing extremely well in both academics and sports. After
graduating from Cambridge University at the age of 21, she accepted a research position at the British Coal
Utilisation Research Association (BCURA) in 1942 and earned a Ph.D in 1945. Two years later, she moved to Paris
and became an expert X-ray crystallographer. {Crystallography is an area of science which studies the atomic and
molecular structure of a crystal. The atoms cause a beam of X-ray to break up in different directions}.

Such achievements were remarkable for a woman in the first half of the 20th century, but Franklin did not stop there.
Her research on coal, the polio and tobacco mosaic viruses, and graphite were considered significant. Her single
greatest triumph, however, was her work on the structure of DNA. For this, she would be appreciated only after
death.

While Franklin’s gender did not obstruct her talent, it certainly prejudiced others from valuing her worth as a
scientist. When she began working at King’s College, London, in 1951, Maurice Wilkins, her colleague, would not
accept her as an equal. Without taking her permission, Wilkins, shared the images of DNA developed by Franklin
with another male scientist, James Watson. These images played a key role in the discovery of the DNA double helix.
Watson and Francis Crick published the findings about the DNA structure and referred to Franklin’s work only as a
supporting article.

In 1962, four years after Franklin’s death from cancer, Watson, Wilkins and Crick together won the Nobel Prize in
Medicine for the double-helix model of DNA. But this time both Watson and Crick acknowledged their debt to
Franklin. In recent decades, several awards have been given to Rosalind Franklin for her trail-blazing work.

the chef needs more strength or pressure to cut through thicker or tougher foods. The tang is the unsharpened
part of the blade which connects the blade edge to the handle. The tang is vital to the overall balance and

weight. It is also vital for stability and strength of the knife. The best knives are often considered to be those
with a full tang. The one which runs from the end of the blade all the way to the butt. The tang also functions
as a handle is some designs. The handle is the part of the knife grasped by the chef during use. It is sometimes
also called as scales. It can be made from a number of materials. It may be straight or designed with finger
grooves and other ergonomic features that make it easier to hold. Some knife manufacturers will dispense of
the handle altogether. Instead creating a knife using a single piece of steel so that the tang also functions as a
handle. The bolster is the raised area between the blade and the handle. It puts a small space between the
hand of the chef and the blade and to stop the fingers from slipping down onto the blade during cutting work.
It also provides additional weight to help balance the knife. These are the rivets or screws which fix the handle
parts to the tang. Less expensive designs may forego the rivets and attach the handle to the tang using resin or
epoxy instead. Butt is the name given to the end of the handle and at the very bottom of the knife. Knifes can

है। आधुनिकीकरण सामाजिक बदलाव की एक प्रक्रिया है। यह मानदंडों और संरचनाओं को शामिल करने वाली
बदलाव की श्रेणी है। एक समाज में शैक्षिक प्रणाली का अहम काम तहजीब को विरासत में नई पीढियों तक पहुंचाने का
