Read the passage below and tick the correct answers :
It is mentioned in the text ‘NATYASHASTRA’ by Bharat muni that about hundred
avanaddha vadyas (membranophones) were in existence in his period. This suggests that
avanaddha vadyas of different shapes and sizes were used in music in that period. Hence these
instruments can be classified in different categories on the basis of their shape, structural difference,
production of sound and different usage such as single headed, double headed, single headed
pair, Damroo-shaped, Mridang shaped etc.
Those instruments which were tuned with the help on ‘Lepan’ (Pasting of mud) in intended
note (Particular note) were named ‘Ang’ vadyas and those which were not having this quality
were named (called) Pratyang Vadyas. Some of the avanaddha instruments which were mentioned
in Natya-shastra are - Mridang, Panav, Dardur Patah etc. Muraj is another name for mridang
according to Bharat. Sharangdev has named ‘mridanga’ even as ‘mardal’, apart from being called
‘Muraj’.
