Exam Pattern
Selection has three steps: a written test, a physical efficiency test (PET) and document verification.
- Written test: 100 objective questions, one mark each, 2 hours, OMR sheet. Level is Class 10. Subjects are Hindi, English, Maths, Social Science, Science and general knowledge with current affairs.
- Scoring below 30 percent fails you. The written marks are not added to the merit list; they only decide who is called for the PET, at about five candidates per post.
- PET: 100 marks over three events. Everyone must clear all three. The final merit list is built from PET marks alone.
Run (50 marks):
| Men, 1.6 km | Marks | Women, 1 km | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 5:00 | 50 | Under 4:00 | 50 |
| 5:00 to 5:20 | 40 | 4:00 to 4:20 | 40 |
| 5:20 to 5:40 | 30 | 4:20 to 4:40 | 30 |
| 5:40 to 6:00 | 20 | 4:40 to 5:00 | 20 |
Shot put is 25 marks:
| Men, 16 lb shot | Marks | Women, 12 lb shot | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| 16 to 17 ft | 9 | 12 to 13 ft | 9 |
| 17 to 18 ft | 13 | 13 to 14 ft | 13 |
| 18 to 19 ft | 17 | 14 to 15 ft | 17 |
| 19 to 20 ft | 21 | 15 to 16 ft | 21 |
| Over 20 ft | 25 | Over 16 ft | 25 |
High jump is the third event, also 25 marks. Men must clear at least 4 ft and women 3 ft.
Eligibility Criteria
- Qualification: Intermediate (10+2) or equivalent. A madarsa Maulvi certificate or a Sanskrit board Shastri or Acharya certificate also counts.
- Age: minimum 18. Maximum 25 for unreserved candidates, 27 for BC and EBC men, 28 for BC and EBC women, and 30 for SC, ST and transgender candidates. Trained Home Guards get five more years.
- Nationality: Indian citizen. Reservation applies only to Bihar domiciles; candidates from other states apply as unreserved.
- Women: 35 percent of posts in each category are reserved for women who are Bihar residents.
Physical standards (no marks for these, but missing them means rejection):
| Category | Height | Chest unexpanded | Chest expanded |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unreserved and BC men | 165 cm | 81 cm | 86 cm |
| EBC men | 160 cm | 81 cm | 86 cm |
| SC and ST men | 160 cm | 79 cm | 84 cm |
| All women | 155 cm | not applicable | not applicable |
Chest must expand by at least 5 cm. Women need a minimum weight of 48 kg. Transgender candidates follow the women's standards.
Selection Process
The order is written test, PET, document verification, then medical and character checks by the appointing police officer. Candidates choose a district or BSAP battalion preference in the form and are allotted by merit. Ties go by older age, then higher educational qualification, then name in English alphabetical order. Pregnant women are not allowed to take the PET and have to submit a declaration.
Salary
Pay level 3, ₹21,700–69,100, with the usual allowances.
How to Apply
Apply online through the link on the CSBC home page. The fee in Advt. 01/2025 was ₹675 for most candidates, and ₹180 for SC and ST candidates of Bihar, women who are Bihar residents and transgender candidates. Bank charges are extra. The caste, non-creamy-layer or EWS certificate has to be valid on the last date of application, not the date of verification.
Participating Institutes

Important Dates
Advt. 01/2025 timeline:
| Stage | Date |
|---|---|
| Online application opened | 18 March 2025 |
| Original last date | 18 April 2025 (later extended) |
| Written exam | 16 July to 3 August 2025, several shifts |
| Final selection list | 27 May 2026 |
The previous cycle, Advt. 01/2023, had its written result in late 2024 and a final list on 9 May 2025. CSBC does not announce the next advertisement in advance. Keep the website open around the start of the year.
Admit Card
E-admit cards are released on the CSBC site and the apply portal before each exam. Log in with the registration number or application number. The OMR instructions on the admit card are worth reading before the day.
Result
CSBC publishes the written result as a list of roll numbers shortlisted for PET, then the PET and document verification notices, and finally the selection list. For Advt. 01/2025 the final list is on the CSBC home page dated 27 May 2026. Waiting-list notices follow for posts left vacant.
Cut Off
CSBC does not publish a written-exam cut-off beyond the 30 percent qualifying line. Final merit depends on PET marks, so the practical cut-off moves with how many candidates clear all three events.
Preparation Tips
The written test is easy to clear and does not count toward merit, so most of the work is the PET. Train for the 1.6 km run under 5 minutes, since it carries 50 of 100 marks. Keep chest and height documents ready, and get the certificates for your category in order well before applying. For the paper, revise Class 10 Maths and science and read a few months of current affairs.
