BTSC X Ray Technician Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility
126 topics across 4 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
The Bihar Technical Service Commission (BTSC), 19 Harding Road, Patna, recruits X-Ray Technicians for the state government. The latest round, Advertisement No. 05/2025, took online applications from 4 March to 1 April 2025 for 1,240 posts.
Two departments asked for these posts: the Health Department wanted 1,232 for its hospitals, and the Home Department (Prisons) wanted 8 for the medical wings of Bihar's jails. You state which department you'd prefer, and the allotment follows that preference read with your merit rank. A prison posting means a different employer and chain of command, so decide before you fill the form.
The result notice came out on 13 August 2026. Only 648 of the 1,240 posts were filled. Nobody was selected against the 48 disability posts or the 24 freedom-fighter posts, and 272 of the 406 women's posts were carried forward.
How the 100 marks are made up
| Component | Marks |
|---|---|
| Computer based test, your percentage × 0.75 | 75 |
| Contract service as an X-Ray Technician, 5 marks a year | 25 |
| Total | 100 |
So 60% in the paper is worth 45 marks. There's no interview.

BTSC X Ray Technician Details
Exam Pattern
| Mode | Computer based test |
| Questions | 100 multiple choice |
| Marks | 100 |
| Duration | 2 hours, no sectional timing |
| Language | Hindi and English |
| Level | The X-Ray Technician diploma syllabus |
| Marking | +1 for a correct answer, −0.25 for a wrong one |
| Shifts | More than one, with scores normalised |
Because of normalisation, the same raw score in two shifts can give different final scores. The normalised percentage is then multiplied by 0.75 before it goes into the merit list.
Syllabus
The Commission's syllabus for this post is the Government of Bihar's two-year Diploma in X-Ray Technician curriculum (Department of Health, Medical Education and Indigenous Medicine). Its theory papers:
| Year | Theory subject | Full marks | Pass marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| First | Applied Anatomy and Physiology | 100 | 50 |
| Radio Physics Pertaining to Radiology | 100 | 50 | |
| Second | Discovery and Production | 100 | 50 |
| Dark Room Techniques and Requirement | 100 | 50 |
Each year also has a 100-mark practical and a 40-mark viva, which the written test can't cover.
- Two of the four subjects are physics: how X-rays are produced and how they behave.
- Dark room technique gets as many marks as anatomy: film processing, chemistry, safelights, cassettes and storage.
- Anatomy is applied, meaning positioning and projections rather than general biology.
B.Sc. Radio Imaging Technology graduates sit the same paper, set at diploma level.
Eligibility Criteria
Any Indian citizen can apply, but reservation is only for permanent residents of Bihar, judged on the permanent address in the form. Everyone else counts as unreserved.
Qualification
- Intermediate or 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, and
- an X-Ray Technician diploma or a Bachelor of Radio Imaging Technology from an institution recognised by the Union, Bihar or another state government, with the certificate in hand.
Age, as on 1 August 2024
| Category | Upper age limit |
|---|---|
| Unreserved men | 37 years |
| Unreserved women | 40 years |
| Backward Class and Extremely Backward Class | 40 years |
| Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe | 42 years |
Minimum age 18. Date of birth is taken only from the matriculation certificate.
Relaxations: 10 years for persons with disabilities, 5 years for Bihar government servants with three years' regular service, or the length of your contract service in this post. You can claim only one.
Reservation
Vertical categories are SC, ST, EBC, BC, EWS and Women of Backward Classes. On top sit 35% for women (subject to vacancies) and 2% for grandchildren of freedom fighters on a central pension, claimed on a District Magistrate's certificate in the set format. Transgender candidates get Backward Class benefits.
Where people lose their reservation:
- BC and EBC need a non-creamy-layer certificate issued for Government of Bihar purposes. A caste certificate alone won't do.
- Women need that certificate in their father's name and address.
- The category in the form can't be changed after registration, and a benefit not claimed in its column isn't granted later.
Disability claims need an Appendix-1 certificate from a medical board, and the Commission may re-examine you through its own board.
Selection Process
- Computer based test, 100 questions in two hours.
- Qualifying marks by category. Fall below yours and nothing else counts.
- Experience marks, added only if you've qualified.
- Merit list by category on the combined 100.
- Document verification of every claim, including the experience certificate.
Qualifying marks
| Category | Minimum |
|---|---|
| General | 40% |
| Backward Class | 36.5% |
| Extremely Backward Class | 34% |
| SC, ST, women of any category, persons with disabilities | 32% |
These are the Bihar-wide minimums, set by state resolutions of 16 July 2007 and 22 January 2021.
Experience marks
Five marks per year of contract service as an X-Ray Technician, up to 25, in a Bihar government hospital or institution, or a non-private hospital under the central government, a panchayati raj body or an urban local body. Part-years count as working days × 5 ÷ 365, up to the date of the advertisement.
The certificate must be on the Appendix-1 format in the advertisement, signed by the Civil Surgeon, a medical college Principal or Superintendent, a super-speciality hospital Director, or the head of your institution. Any other format earns neither the marks nor the age relaxation.
Salary
| Employers | Health Department and Home Department (Prisons), Government of Bihar |
| Pay scale (unrevised) | ₹5,200 to ₹20,200, Grade Pay ₹2,800 |
| Current structure | Pay Level 5 |
Pay is the same in both departments, and the same as the Commission's Laboratory Technician and Operation Theatre Assistant posts. Allowances follow state rules for Level 5 and aren't listed in the advertisement.
How to Apply
Apply online only at btsc.bihar.gov.in. Pay online by debit or credit card, net banking or UPI; the bank's charge is extra.
| Candidate | Fee |
|---|---|
| General, BC, EBC, EWS | ₹600 |
| SC and ST, permanent residents of Bihar | ₹150 |
| Women of any category, permanent residents of Bihar | ₹150 |
| Anyone from outside Bihar | ₹600 |
| Persons with disabilities | ₹150 |
If you pay a reduced fee and can't later produce the certificate behind it, your candidature is cancelled. The advertisement suggests paying the full fee if you're unsure.
Documents
Matriculation certificate, 10+2 marksheet and certificate, every year's diploma or B.Sc. marksheet with the final certificate, caste, non-creamy-layer or EWS certificate, and the permanent residence certificate. Reservation, disability, freedom-fighter descent and experience each go in their own column and can't be added later. Get the Appendix-1 experience certificate signed before you fill the form.

Numbers can change if a department revises its requisition before the last date.
Exam Centres
The test runs in several shifts at centres named on the admit card. The advertisement promises nothing about home districts. Watch btsc.bihar.gov.in for every notice.
Your posting is separate: Health Department hospitals across Bihar, or the medical wings of the state's prisons.
Important Dates
BTSC has no yearly calendar. It advertises a post when a department sends a requisition. Dates for Advertisement No. 05/2025:
| Stage | Date |
|---|---|
| Online registration | 4 March to 1 April 2025 |
| Age counted on | 1 August 2024 |
| Experience counted up to | The date of the advertisement |
| Result (Notice No. 2553) | 13 August 2026 |
That round is over; the result came seventeen months after the advertisement. Laboratory Technician (02/2025), Operation Theatre Assistant (03/2025) and ECG Technician (04/2025) opened the same day. Watch the Recruitments page for the next one.
Admit Card
Download it from the Admit Card / Call Letter page. No date is fixed in advance. It tells you your centre and shift.
After the exam, scores appear on the Score Card page. Objections to the key or result go through the Objection Portal in the window announced; pick advertisement 05/2025.
Result
Results are posted per advertisement on the Result page. For 05/2025 the result notice (13 August 2026) covers both departments and lists vacancies, selections and cut-offs by category.
Your merit score isn't your raw count: it's the normalised percentage × 0.75 (50% becomes 37.5), plus any experience marks. So the unreserved cut-off of 41.6250 is not 41.6% in the paper. Department allotment follows your stated preference read with your merit rank. Selected candidates go on to document verification.
Cut Off
The qualifying minimums (40% General down to 32%) are under Selection Process. The closing marks from the result notice of 13 August 2026, out of 100:
| Category | Vacancies | Selected | Cut-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unreserved | 477 | 396 | 41.6250 |
| EWS | 120 | 78, of whom 47 as EWS-UR | 40.3125 for the EWS-UR conversions |
| Scheduled Caste | 200 | 28 | Every eligible candidate selected |
| Scheduled Tribe | 13 | 2 | Every eligible candidate selected |
| Extremely Backward Class | 227 | 77 | Every eligible candidate selected |
| Backward Class | 168 | 67 | Every eligible candidate selected |
| Women of Backward Classes | 35 | 0 | No eligible candidate |
| Total | 1,240 | 648 |
In five categories everyone who qualified was selected and posts still went empty. Carried forward:
- all 48 disability posts and all 24 freedom-fighter posts;
- 272 of 406 women's posts: 33 of 167 unreserved, and every reserved one (42 EWS, 67 SC, 4 ST, 76 EBC, 50 BC). All 134 women selected came through the unreserved list;
- all 35 Women of Backward Classes posts.
Operation Theatre Assistant (03/2025) went the same way: 685 selected for 1,683 posts, unreserved cut-off 32.8125, none of 66 disability posts filled, 475 of 559 women's posts carried forward.
The merit list is subject to CWJC No. 5526/2026 in the Patna High Court, and one BC and one EBC vacancy are held pending it.
Preparation Tips
- Study physics as hard as anatomy. Radio Physics and Discovery and Production are half the theory.
- Don't skip dark room technique. It carries as much as anatomy, and modern digital-imaging guides often leave it out.
- Sort out your experience certificate early. Up to 25 marks and an age relaxation depend on the Appendix-1 format being right and claimed in the form.
- Set your target after the multiplier. 60% in the paper is 45 merit marks.
- Answer everything you can narrow down. A wrong answer costs only a quarter, and there's no sectional clock.
- Prison posts: check the roster for your category first. Most have one post or none.
Sample Papers
No previous or model papers are available for this post. BTSC doesn't publish them, so anything sold as a "BTSC X-Ray Technician previous paper" didn't come from the Commission.
The official guides are the post's syllabus and Advertisement No. 05/2025, both on btsc.bihar.gov.in.
