CSIR NPL Technician Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility
115 topics across 4 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
CSIR-National Physical Laboratory at Dr. K. S. Krishnan Marg in New Delhi is the National Metrology Institute of India, a laboratory of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. It keeps Indian Standard Time. Its work is measurement, across six divisions.
Technician (1) is the entry technical grade, at Level-2 of the pay matrix. The advertisement states the job in five words: to assist the Scientific and Technical Staff. It is a trade post, not a graduate one. The qualification is Class 10 with science plus an ITI certificate, apprenticeship or trade experience.
There is no CSIR-wide examination for this
Each CSIR laboratory recruits its own technical staff under its own advertisement number, and CSIR headquarters advertises separately again. No combined exam, no shared merit list, no common calendar. Watch NPL's own Careers page.

| T2-05 | Digital Photographer / Photographer | 01 | UR |
| T2-06 | Mechanic Motor Vehicle | 01 | UR |
Half the advertisement is one trade. Electronics carries ten of the twenty posts and Electrical another five; a photographer or motor mechanic is competing for a single unreserved post. Both PwBD posts are earmarked for category (b), deaf and hard of hearing.
The application window closed on 30 June 2026, and no screening result, trade test date or written examination date had been published for it. The cycle below is as the laboratory advertised it, which is what the next one can be expected to resemble.

CSIR NPL Technician Details
Exam Pattern
Three stages after the paperwork is screened, and the last of them is where merit is made.
- Screening. A Screening Committee constituted by the Director scrutinises every application and shortlists for the Trade Test. It sets its own criteria and is not bound to call everyone who meets the minimum.
- Trade Test in the relevant trade. Qualifying.
- Written examination of three papers, from which the merit list is made.
The written examination
| Mode | OMR based or computer based, objective, multiple choice |
|---|---|
| Medium | Bilingual, English and Hindi, except the English Language questions |
| Standard | Class 10 plus ITI, or Class 12 |
| Total | 150 questions, 2 hours 30 minutes |
| Paper | Subject | Questions | Marks | Per correct | Negative | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| I | Mental Ability Test | 50 | 100 | +2 | None | 1 hour |
| II | General Awareness | 25 | 75 | +3 | −1 | 30 minutes |
| English Language | 25 | 75 | +3 | −1 | ||
| III | Concerned Subject | 50 | 150 | +3 | −1 | 1 hour |
| Total | 150 | 400 | 2 hours 30 minutes | |||
Paper-I is a gate, not a score
The merit list is the total of Papers II and III, out of 300, not 400. Paper-I's 100 marks are thrown away. Worse, Papers II and III are not evaluated at all unless Paper-I clears a threshold, which the Selection Committee sets separately for each post code and publishes on the laboratory's website before the exam. Write brilliant answers in your trade and fall short on Paper-I, and those sheets go unmarked.
The marking split follows from that. Paper-I has no negative marking, so a blind guess among four options is worth +0.50 and nothing should be left blank. Papers II and III run at +3 and −1, where a blind guess among four is worth exactly zero. Eliminate first; if you cannot eliminate anything, leave it.
Where the marks actually are
| Component | Marks that count | Share of the 300 |
|---|---|---|
| Concerned Subject, Paper-III | 150 | 50 per cent |
| General Awareness, Paper-II | 75 | 25 per cent |
| English Language, Paper-II | 75 | 25 per cent |
| Mental Ability, Paper-I | 0 | qualifying only |
How ties are broken
CSIR prescribes a six-rung order, by Circular Letter No. 5-1(211)/2014-PD dated 30 May 2023, applied one rung at a time:
- Higher marks in the concerned subject or trade papers.
- Fewer negative marks in those papers.
- Fewer negative marks in all papers counted for merit.
- Date of birth, older candidate higher.
- Acquiring the essential qualification earlier.
- Alphabetical order of first names.
Two of the first three rungs reward not guessing. A candidate who reaches the same total with fewer wrong answers is placed above one who reached it with more.
Syllabus
CSIR-NPL publishes the subject names and marks, and no topic list beneath them. Each paper below is as the advertisement defines it, with the one expansion it does give.
Paper-I: Mental Ability Test, 50 questions, 100 marks, qualifying
The advertisement's own footnote: "Mental Ability Test will be so devised so as to include General Intelligence, Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning, Problem Solving, Situational Judgement, etc."
| Named in the advertisement | What it usually means at this level |
|---|---|
| General Intelligence | Analogies, classification, series, coding and decoding, figure-based reasoning |
| Quantitative Aptitude | Class 10 arithmetic: number system, percentage, ratio and proportion, average, time and work, time and distance, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, mensuration |
| Reasoning | Verbal and non-verbal reasoning, blood relations, direction sense, seating, syllogism |
| Problem Solving | Applied arithmetic and logic in worded settings |
| Situational Judgement | Workplace situations with a best-response choice. Rare in a trade exam, so read up on the question type before the day. |
This paper earns no merit marks and decides whether the other two are marked. The hurdle height is set per post code and published on the laboratory's website before the exam.
Paper-II: General Awareness and English Language, 50 questions, 150 marks
- General Awareness, 25 questions, 75 marks. No topics named. At Class 10 plus ITI standard this is ordinarily current affairs, Indian history, geography, polity, economy and everyday science.
- English Language, 25 questions, 75 marks. The one part not set bilingually. Ordinarily grammar, error spotting, synonyms and antonyms, fill in the blanks, idioms and comprehension.
These 150 marks are half the merit list, and they are the half that is identical whichever trade you apply in.
Paper-III: Concerned Subject, 50 questions, 150 marks
Your own trade, at Class 10 with science plus ITI standard. One paper per post code:
| Post code | Concerned subject |
|---|---|
| T2-01 | Electronics Mechanic / Electronics trade |
| T2-02 | Electrician trade |
| T2-03 | Computer Operator and Programming Assistant (COPA) trade |
| T2-04 | Multimedia, Animation and Special Effects trade |
| T2-05 | Digital Photographer / Photographer trade |
| T2-06 | Mechanic Motor Vehicle trade |
Each is a named NCVT or SCVT trade with a published national syllabus under the Craftsmen Training Scheme. Since the laboratory publishes none of its own, that is what to work from.
The Trade Test comes first
It is in the relevant trade, qualifying, and held before the written papers. Its threshold, like Paper-I's, is set by the Selection Committee per post code and notified on the website beforehand. A candidate who cannot do the practical work never reaches the written papers.
What the syllabus does not contain
Nothing about metrology, physics or the laboratory's own research, despite the employer being the National Metrology Institute. And no descriptive paper and no interview: every stage is either practical or multiple choice.
Eligibility Criteria
Everything is reckoned on the last date, 30 June 2026. The advertisement fixes that date for both the upper age limit and the qualification, and requires the final result of the qualifying course to have been declared on or before it.
Age
18 minimum, 28 maximum as on 30 June 2026. Date of birth is proved only by the Class 10, Matriculation, SSLC or HSC certificate, or a birth certificate from the appropriate government authority. Where the board certificate carries no date of birth, a school leaving certificate showing it is accepted.
| Category | Age relaxation |
|---|---|
| SC and ST | 5 years |
| OBC (NCL) | 3 years |
| PwBD, unreserved | 10 years |
| PwBD, OBC | 13 years |
| PwBD, SC or ST | 15 years |
| Regular government employees | Up to 5 years on top of category relaxation, giving a maximum of 10 for SC and ST and 8 for OBC (NCL) |
| Ex-servicemen | 3 years, after deducting military service from actual age |
Two conditions on the government-employee relaxation are easy to miss. It needs three years of continuous service in the same line or an allied cadre, with a connection the appointing authority accepts. And the certificate proving it must be issued after the date of the advertisement, on the employer's letterhead, saying the candidate is a regularly appointed government servant and not casual, adhoc, daily wage, hourly paid or contract. Temporary, contractual and project staff in CSIR laboratories must answer "NO" to the government employee question.
One further trap: an SC, ST or OBC (NCL) candidate applying against an unreserved post gets no age relaxation. SC and ST candidates keep the fee exemption even then.
Essential qualification
The same structure for every post code, with the trade name changed. Class 10 or equivalent with science subjects and at least 55 per cent marks, plus any one of:
- an ITI certificate or a national or state trade certificate in the relevant trade;
- two years of full-time experience as an apprentice trainee from a recognised institution in the trade;
- three years of work experience in the trade in a ministry, department, organisation, public sector undertaking or autonomous body under the Government of India, a State or a Union Territory.
Read the third route carefully. Private-sector trade experience does not count, and part-time, daily wage, visiting or guest work is not counted at all. Experience runs only from the date the minimum essential educational qualification was acquired.
The 55 per cent, when the marksheet gives grades
Where a board awards CGPA, SGPA, OGPA, DGPA or CPI, convert to a percentage using your own board's formula and attach a copy of that formula. Where the subject or the percentage is not evident from the marksheet, substantiate the claim with valid proof. The Screening Committee's decision on accepting or rejecting it is final.
Equivalence claims
Claiming a qualification as equivalent needs an order, letter or notification with its number and date from the authority that so treated it. Without that document the committee may reject the equivalence, and with it the application.
Other conditions
- Indian citizenship.
- Candidates working in CSIR, government departments, autonomous bodies, universities, PSUs and government-funded research agencies must apply through proper channel; the advertisement says candidature will not be considered otherwise, and the forwarded hard copy must arrive by the closing date. An advance copy may be sent separately.
- Name, date of birth and parent's name must be written strictly as in the Class 10 certificate. A change of name needs a gazette notification or affidavit.
- Blood relatives must be declared: whether any blood or close relative works in CSIR-NPL, in CSIR, or in any other CSIR laboratory, institute or unit. The definition covers spouse, children, parents, siblings and anyone related to them by blood or marriage.
- Certificates in a language other than Hindi or English need a transcript attested by a gazetted officer or notary.
Selection Process
Four steps, and three of them can end a candidature before a single question is answered.
- Screening. A Screening Committee constituted under the CSIR Service Rules 1994 reads every application against the advertisement and the documents attached.
- Trade Test in the relevant trade, qualifying.
- Paper-I, qualifying, against a threshold set per post code.
- Papers II and III, marked only for those who clear Paper-I. The merit list is their total out of 300.
There is no interview.
Screening is the stage to take most seriously
The advertisement says meeting the minimum is not enough: "Mere possession of the same does not entitle candidates to be called for Trade Test/Written Examination." The committee adopts its own criteria, so the advertisement tells candidates to list every qualification and every piece of relevant experience above the minimum, with documents and marksheets, semester by semester.
How much that matters shows in the laboratory's own published screening notification for its 2025 Technical Assistant recruitment, the closest comparable process: 221 of 569 applications, 39 per cent, were rejected before anyone was tested. The full breakdown, and the published rejection codes, are in the result section. Most of those rejections were not about ability. They were incomplete applications: unattested photocopies, a missing photograph, an unsigned declaration, and above all experience claimed but not documented.
The Trade Test and the Paper-I gate
The Trade Test is practical, in the relevant trade, qualifying, and held before the written examination. Its threshold is decided by the Selection Committee for each category of post and notified on the website ahead of the written papers.
Then three papers in 2 hours 30 minutes: 150 questions, 400 marks on the paper but 300 marks in the merit list. Paper-I, the 100-mark Mental Ability Test, is qualifying, and Papers II and III are evaluated only for those who clear its threshold. A candidate can write excellent answers in their trade and never have them read.
What ends a candidature later
- Any discrepancy between the application and the original documents makes the application invalid, and a candidate found out during screening or selection becomes ineligible to sit the tests.
- False or suppressed information cancels the candidature without reason given, and after selection makes the candidate liable to removal from service at any stage.
- Reserved-category candidature stays provisional until the certificate is verified with the issuing authority. A false SC, ST, OBC, EWS, PwBD or ESM claim, or a false creamy-layer declaration, means services are terminated forthwith, without prejudice to action under the Indian Penal Code.
- Canvassing in any form, or bringing any influence, is a disqualification.
The laboratory also reserves the right to cancel the advertisement without reason or not to fill the posts, says the vacancy numbers are provisional and may rise or fall at final selection, and adds that "this advertisement does not necessarily tantamount to the selections being actually made."
Salary
| Technician (1), CSIR-NPL | |
|---|---|
| Pay Level | Level-2 |
| Pay band | ₹19,900 – ₹63,200 |
| Basic pay on entry | ₹19,900 |
| Total emoluments | about ₹44,428 a month, which the advertisement defines as the approximate emoluments on the minimum of the scale including house rent allowance in a Class X city |
| Probation | 2 years from taking charge, extendable or curtailable by the Competent Authority |
| Confirmation | Considered after successful probation, under the extant rules |
The ₹44,428 is basic pay plus the usual central allowances at the entry point, in a Class X city, which New Delhi is. It falls if CSIR accommodation is allotted, because house rent allowance is then not admissible, and it rises with every dearness allowance revision and every annual increment.
What the post carries besides pay
- Dearness, House Rent and Transport Allowance as admissible to central government employees and applied to CSIR.
- CSIR accommodation of the entitled type, subject to availability. Taking it means forgoing house rent allowance.
- National Pension System, as for anyone recruited into central government service on or after 1 January 2004.
- Medical reimbursement, Leave Travel Concession and House Building Advance under CSIR rules.
- The Assessment Promotion Scheme for Technical Staff, named in the advertisement. It is assessment-based rather than vacancy-based, so a technical cadre moves up without waiting for a post to fall vacant.
Service conditions
Recruitment is governed by the CSIR Service Rules 1994 for Recruitment of Technical and Support Staff, with the CCS (Conduct) Rules 1964, the CCS (CCA) Rules 1965 and the Fundamental and Supplementary Rules applying to the extent they apply to Council employees.
Two conditions bite during probation: a selected candidate may not apply for a post anywhere else, and must disclose any application made elsewhere before joining, immediately on joining. And selected candidates serve under the Director, CSIR-NPL and can be transferred to any CSIR laboratory anywhere in India. CSIR runs laboratories from Jammu to Thiruvananthapuram, so that liability is real.
How to Apply
This is a postal application, not an online one. No portal, no login, no uploads for Advertisement No. Rectt./02/2026: download the form, fill it in, and post it with a demand draft and self-attested photocopies.
| Item | Advertisement No. Rectt./02/2026 |
|---|---|
| Mode | By post, on the downloaded form |
| Application fee | ₹500, by crossed demand draft or pay order on any nationalised bank, valid at least three months |
| Drawn in favour of | Director, National Physical Laboratory, payable at New Delhi, with name and post code on the back |
| Fee exemption | SC, ST, PwBD, women, candidates applying from abroad, transgender candidates |
| Envelope superscription | APPLICATION FOR THE POST OF TECHNICIAN(1) − (Post Code No. ____) |
| Addressed to | Senior Controller of Administration, CSIR-National Physical Laboratory, Dr. K. S. Krishnan Marg, New Delhi 110012 |
| Must reach by | 30 June 2026, the same for far-flung areas |
| Withdrawal and refund | Neither. The fee is never refunded or carried over. |
"Must reach" is not "must be posted". Applications received late for any reason, including a wrongly addressed envelope, delivery elsewhere or postal delay, are not entertained. A separate application and a separate draft are needed for each post code.
What must be in the envelope
The demand draft with name and post code on the back; a passport-size photograph on Part I signed across in full and a second on Part II not signed across; self-attested photocopies of the date of birth certificate, educational certificates and marksheets, category certificate, experience certificates and any EWS, PwBD, women's relaxation, ex-serviceman or transgender certificate; and the employer's endorsement where required, in the format printed on the form. An application without a photograph, without the fee, without the applicable testimonials, or unsigned is summarily rejected.
An experience certificate must come from the authority competent to issue it and state the duration with joining and relieving dates, the emoluments, and the nature of the job performed. Miss any of the three and the committee's decision is final. This is where most applications fail.
A government employee's application is considered only if forwarded, endorsed and certified by the employer that the applicant, if selected, will be relieved within one month of the appointment orders, with vigilance clearance recorded.
Participating Institutes
One laboratory, one employer. CSIR-National Physical Laboratory is a constituent laboratory of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, under the Ministry of Science and Technology. The advertisement describes it as the National Metrology Institute of India, created by an act of parliament.
The six divisions a Technician assists
- Physico-Mechanical Metrology
- Electrical and Electronics Metrology
- Environment Sciences and Biomedical Metrology
- Advanced Materials and Devices and Metrology
- Bhartiya Nirdeshak Dravya (BND)
- Indian Standard Time Division
Research groups work on quantum-phenomena-based metrology, precision measurement of engineering and electronic materials, nanoscience, thin films and surface science, graphene and carbon nanotubes, environmental pollutants, bio-instruments, cryogenics and instrumentation. The Indian Standard Time Division is the reason the laboratory is a household name without most households knowing it: NPL keeps the national time reference.
Where the job is, and where it can go
At the laboratory in New Delhi. But the appointment is to CSIR, and selected persons serve under the Director, CSIR-NPL and can be transferred to any CSIR laboratory or institute anywhere in India as the need arises.
Why there is no single CSIR recruitment to watch
Each national laboratory advertises its own Technician, Technical Assistant and support staff vacancies under its own number, on its own website, with its own closing date. CSIR headquarters advertises separately again. No shared merit list, no common calendar. A Technician post at CSIR-NPL and one at another CSIR laboratory are two different recruitments, and the only way to catch both is to watch both. The Council's recruitment archive lists advertisements across laboratories in one place.
Exam Centres
CSIR-NPL names no examination cities for this recruitment, and there is no clause giving candidates a choice of centre.
| Recruiting office | Senior Controller of Administration, CSIR-National Physical Laboratory, Dr. K. S. Krishnan Marg, New Delhi 110012 |
| Where the post is | New Delhi, with liability to transfer to any CSIR laboratory |
| Where the Trade Test is held | Not stated in the advertisement |
| Where the written examination is held | Not stated in the advertisement |
| How a candidate is told | Notifications on the laboratory's website, and by e-mail to shortlisted candidates |
Plan for New Delhi. A Trade Test in electronics, electrical work, motor vehicle mechanics or photography is practical and needs equipment, and the laboratory has it in one place. The written examination may be OMR based or computer based; the advertisement leaves the choice open.
Originals to keep ready before the Trade Test
- Class 10 or Matriculation certificate, as date of birth proof.
- Educational certificates and marksheets, with the CGPA conversion formula where the board awards grades.
- The ITI, trade or apprenticeship certificate in the applied trade.
- Experience certificates stating duration, emoluments and nature of duties.
- Category certificates in the prescribed Government of India format: SC, ST, OBC (NCL) with the non-creamy-layer declaration, EWS income and asset certificate, PwBD certificate in Form V, VI or VII, or the ex-serviceman discharge certificate.
- The No Objection Certificate, for a candidate in government service.
Reserved-category candidates should note the timing: the certificate must be in the prescribed format and held before appearing for the Trade Test, not obtained afterwards. Candidature is liable to be cancelled without further notice, even after the test, if a condition or a certificate turns out not to have been met.
Important Dates
The window for Advertisement No. Rectt./02/2026 has closed, and no screening result, Trade Test date or written examination date had been published for it.
| Event | Date |
|---|---|
| Advertisement published on the laboratory's website | May 2026 |
| Hindi version published | June 2026 |
| Last date for receipt of the application form | 30 June 2026, including far-flung areas |
| Crucial date for age and for qualification | 30 June 2026 |
| Screening result | not published as at the verification date |
| Trade Test and written examination | not announced |
Completion of a course is reckoned from the date of issue of the provisional certificate or notification, not from the date of the last examination.
What the intervals look like here
The laboratory's Technical Assistant recruitment, Advertisement No. NPL/Rectt./05/2025, is the nearest comparable process and its dates are published: applications closed online on 27 February 2026 at 11.59 p.m., hard copies by 9 March 2026, and the provisional Trade Test shortlist appeared on 14 August 2026. That is five and a half months from the closing date to the screening result, and it is what a committee reading every application by hand costs. Expect a long silence and do not read it as a cancellation.
That recruitment took applications online and then required a signed printout by post, while this Technician advertisement is postal throughout. The application route is not constant between advertisements, so read the current one.
The next cycle will arrive on the laboratory's Careers page and nowhere else. There is no published annual calendar, and advertisement numbers run by year and serial rather than to a schedule.
Admit Card
There is no admit card portal for this recruitment, because there is no application portal. The laboratory communicates by website notification and by e-mail.
A screening notification appears on the Careers page naming the candidates provisionally shortlisted for the Trade Test, those not recommended with a rejection code each, and the criteria adopted, all in one PDF. Shortlisted candidates are told, in the laboratory's own capitals, to watch their registered e-mail as well as the website. No interim enquiry or correspondence is entertained.
Shortlisting is provisional. It can be withdrawn after the test: incorrect information, a suppressed material fact, or failing a condition of eligibility cancels the candidature without further notice, even after appointment.
Result
CSIR-NPL publishes results as signed notifications on its Careers page, and it publishes more of the process than most recruiters do. No result for Advertisement No. Rectt./02/2026 had been issued when this was checked. The shape below is read off the laboratory's own notification for its Technical Assistant recruitment, No. NPL/Rectt./05/2025, dated 14 August 2026.
The screening notification
One PDF, containing what the applications had to satisfy, the criteria the Screening Committee adopted, the list shortlisted for the Trade Test post code by post code, and the list of candidates not recommended with a rejection code against each name, plus an annexure decoding every code. Most recruiters publish who got through. This laboratory publishes who did not, and why.
| Code | Reason |
|---|---|
| R-1 | Overage on the last date |
| R-2 | Does not possess the essential qualification, with sub-codes for not having the required percentage, the percentage being unascertainable, the qualification not being in the relevant discipline, the relevance of experience being unascertainable, inadequate experience, and no valid relevant experience |
| R-3 | Incomplete application, twelve sub-codes: photograph not affixed; declaration not signed physically; documents not self-attested; wrongful information on government-servant status; no valid date of birth proof; printout not enclosed; fee not paid or short; supporting documents missing; details mismatching the documents; no documentary proof of claimed experience; the experience document not valid; not forwarded through proper channel |
| R-4 | Does not belong to the reserved category as per the central list |
| R-5 | Application received after the last date |
| Post code | Shortlisted | Not recommended | Screened | Rejected |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TA01 | 109 | 46 | 155 | 30 per cent |
| TA02 | 106 | 60 | 166 | 36 per cent |
| TA03 | 35 | 22 | 57 | 39 per cent |
| TA04 | 12 | 14 | 26 | 54 per cent |
| TA05 | 43 | 41 | 84 | 49 per cent |
| TA06 | 43 | 38 | 81 | 47 per cent |
| All six | 348 | 221 | 569 | 39 per cent |
Reading the individual codes, the pattern is plain. The commonest single reason is experience claimed but not documented, R-3(x), often with R-3(xi), the document not being valid. Then unattested photocopies, R-3(iii), and mismatches between the application and the supporting papers, R-3(ix). Many candidates carry two or three codes at once. Very few are rejected for being unqualified; most are rejected for not proving they are qualified.
The criteria the committee actually applied in that round were short: essential qualification as per the advertisement, and an application complete in all respects received on or before the last date. It has power to shortlist on qualifications and experience above the minimum, and did not need to use it.
After the written examination
- The merit list is Papers II and III, out of 300. Paper-I contributes nothing.
- The Paper-I and Trade Test thresholds are published post code by post code before the written examination.
- Appointment is provisional until documents are verified. A false reserved-category claim means termination forthwith, without prejudice to action under the Indian Penal Code.
- The vacancy count is provisional and may rise or fall at final selection.
Cut Off
CSIR-NPL publishes no cut-off marks for this post. The written examination for Advertisement No. Rectt./02/2026 had not been held when this was checked, and the screening notification for a comparable recruitment carries no marks at all.
It does publish the thresholds, and it publishes them before the paper rather than after. The Selection Committee fixes a minimum for the Trade Test and a minimum for Paper-I, separately for each post code, and both go on the Careers page ahead of the written examination. A number for Electronics with its ten vacancies says nothing about a single-post trade. Papers II and III have no threshold; they are the merit list, out of 300.
The one published number that transfers is from screening, not marks: 39 per cent of applications in the comparable Technical Assistant recruitment were rejected before any test.
Preparation Tips
1. The application is the first examination, and two in five fail it
In the comparable Technical Assistant recruitment, 221 of 569 applications were rejected at screening, almost none of them for being unqualified. Work the published rejection codes as a checklist: photograph on Part I signed across and a second on Part II not signed across; declaration signed physically; every photocopy self-attested, since a photocopy of a self-attested document is itself a listed rejection reason; the draft for the right amount with name and post code on the back; date of birth proved by the Class 10 certificate and nothing else; every detail matching the supporting document; government service declared truthfully and forwarded through proper channel.
2. An experience certificate that does not say three things is worthless
Duration with joining and relieving dates, emoluments, nature of the job. Miss one and the Screening Committee's decision is final. Experience counts only from the date you acquired the minimum educational qualification, part-time and daily-wage work does not count at all, and for the three-year route into eligibility the employer must be a government body.
3. Guess on Paper-I, not on the others
Paper-I carries no negative marking, so leaving anything blank is strictly worse than guessing, and it is the gate that decides whether Papers II and III are marked at all. At +3 and −1 on Papers II and III a blind guess among four options is worth nothing, and the CSIR tie-break rules place the candidate with fewer negative marks higher on two separate rungs. Eliminate first; if you cannot, leave it.
4. Half the marks that count are your own trade
No past papers exist, so build mock papers from the published scheme and practise Papers I and II on any bank of Class 10 to 12 level reasoning, awareness and English questions, matching the marking scheme rather than just the topics.
Paper-III is 150 of the 300. Each post code names an existing NCVT or SCVT trade with a published national syllabus under the Craftsmen Training Scheme. Work from the trade syllabus of your own ITI course.
5. Do not neglect English
English Language is 75 marks, a quarter of the merit list, and it is the one part of the paper not set bilingually. A candidate strong in their trade and weak in English gives away a quarter of the contest before it starts.
6. Situational judgement will surprise most trade candidates
It is named in the advertisement's own definition of the Mental Ability Test. Workplace scenarios with a best-response choice, no formulae. Ten minutes understanding the question type is worth more than an hour of anything else in that paper.
7. Time the middle paper
Paper-II is 50 questions in 30 minutes, 36 seconds each, against 72 seconds on the other two. Practise everything at one pace and you will run out of time in the paper that carries half the non-trade marks.
8. Post early, and apply for every trade you qualify in
The application must reach the laboratory by the closing date, with no allowance for a wrongly addressed envelope or postal delay. A separate application and a separate draft per post code, so a candidate eligible in two trades doubles their chances for a second ₹500. Women, SC, ST, PwBD and transgender candidates pay nothing.
Sample Papers
No previous year papers or answer keys are available for CSIR-NPL Technician. The laboratory does not release them and the advertisement promises none.
What it does publish, the Paper-I and Trade Test thresholds ahead of each written examination, goes on the laboratory's Careers page.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there one CSIR examination for Technician posts?
No. Each CSIR laboratory recruits its own technical staff under its own advertisement number, on its own website, with its own closing date, and CSIR headquarters advertises separately again. No combined exam, no shared merit list, no common calendar. For this post, watch CSIR-NPL.
What is the current advertisement and is it open?
Advertisement No. Rectt./02/2026, for 20 posts. Its last date was 30 June 2026 and the window has closed. No screening result, Trade Test date or written examination date had been published for it when this was checked.
What qualification do I need?
Class 10 or equivalent with science and at least 55 per cent, plus any one of: an ITI or national or state trade certificate in the relevant trade; two years full-time as an apprentice trainee in it; or three years of work experience in it in a government ministry, department, organisation, PSU or autonomous body. Private-sector experience does not count for that third route.
What is the age limit?
18 to 28 on the last date. Relaxations: 5 years SC and ST, 3 OBC (NCL), 10 to 15 for PwBD, 3 for ex-servicemen after deducting military service, and up to 5 for regular government employees with three years in the same or an allied line. An SC, ST or OBC candidate applying against an unreserved post gets no age relaxation, though SC and ST candidates keep the fee exemption.
How is the selection made?
Screening, then a qualifying Trade Test, then three written papers. Paper-I is qualifying, and Papers II and III are marked only for those who clear its threshold. The merit list is Papers II and III. No interview.
What is the examination pattern?
150 questions in 2 hours 30 minutes, objective, OMR or computer based, bilingual except the English questions. Paper-I: Mental Ability, 50 questions, 100 marks, +2, no negative marking, one hour. Paper-II: General Awareness 25 and English 25, 150 marks, +3 and −1, 30 minutes. Paper-III: Concerned Subject, 50 questions, 150 marks, +3 and −1, one hour.
Which marks count towards the merit list?
Papers II and III only, 300 marks, not the 400 on the papers. Paper-I's 100 marks are qualifying and are thrown away, and Papers II and III are not even evaluated unless Paper-I clears a threshold fixed per post code and published before the exam.
Should I guess?
On Paper-I, always. On Papers II and III, no: at +3 and −1 a blind guess is worth zero, and the tie-break rules place the candidate with fewer negative marks higher on two separate rungs.
How are ties broken?
Six rungs, from CSIR Circular Letter No. 5-1(211)/2014-PD of 30 May 2023: higher marks in the trade papers; fewer negatives in those papers; fewer negatives in all merit papers; older candidate first; earlier acquisition of the essential qualification; alphabetical order of first names.
How do I apply, and what does it cost?
By post, on a form downloaded from the laboratory's website. ₹500 by crossed demand draft or pay order in favour of "Director, National Physical Laboratory", payable at New Delhi, name and post code on the back. SC, ST, PwBD, women, candidates applying from abroad and transgender candidates are exempt. Separate application and separate draft for each post code.
What is the commonest reason applications are rejected?
Not being unqualified, but not proving it. In the comparable Technical Assistant recruitment, 221 of 569 applications, 39 per cent, were rejected at screening, mostly for experience claimed without a valid document, photocopies not self-attested, and details that did not match the supporting papers.
What is the pay?
Level-2, ₹19,900 to ₹63,200, entering at ₹19,900, with total emoluments of about ₹44,428 a month on the minimum of the scale including house rent allowance in a Class X city. That falls if CSIR accommodation is allotted. New entrants are on the National Pension System.
Where will I be posted?
New Delhi to begin with, with liability to transfer to any CSIR laboratory anywhere in India. Probation is two years, during which you may not apply for a post elsewhere and must disclose any application made before joining.
Does CSIR-NPL publish previous year papers or answer keys?
No, neither. What it does publish is the exact scheme, from which a mock paper can be built, and the Paper-I and Trade Test thresholds ahead of the examination.
