GATE PI Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility, Important Dates
124 topics across 5 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
GATE PI is the Production and Industrial Engineering paper of the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. The test is run in rotation by IISc and seven IITs for the National Coordination Board, and IIT Madras is in charge of GATE 2027.
PI is a small paper. In 2026 only 4,849 people registered and 3,673 sat it, against about 60,000 in Mechanical. Much of the syllabus overlaps with ME, but PI goes deeper into manufacturing, quality and operations research.
The score, valid three years, is used mainly for M.Tech and PhD admission in manufacturing and industrial engineering. Registration for 2027 has ended; the exam is in February 2027 and results are on 19 March 2027.

Eligibility Criteria
Eligible: students in the third year or above of an undergraduate course, and graduates holding any government-approved degree in engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce, arts or humanities. Science master's and MCA students can apply from their first year; professional society candidates such as AMIE or IIIE once they finish Section A. No age limit.
You don't need a production degree to take PI. Candidates whose main paper is ME can also add PI as their second.
How to Apply
| Category | One paper, regular | Two papers, regular | One paper, late fee | Two papers, late fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Female, SC, ST, PwD | ₹1,000 | ₹2,000 | ₹1,500 | ₹2,500 |
| Everyone else, including foreign nationals | ₹2,000 | ₹4,000 | ₹2,500 | ₹4,500 |
Forms went in through GOAPS only. Indian applicants were told a verified DigiLocker account would make things smoother, and a live photo was taken at registration. Category, paper and city changes can still be made on GOAPS up to 21 October 2026, mostly for ₹500 a paper.
Participating Institutes
IITs and IISc admit to M.Tech through COAP and NITs through CCMT; check each programme's list of accepted GATE papers before you apply. GATE-qualified M.Tech students at government-supported institutes get ₹12,400 a month.
The GATE site lists PSUs such as SAIL, RINL, BHEL and HAL among those that have used scores. Each advertisement lists the papers it accepts, so check that PI is among them.
Exam Centres
GATE 2027 has centres in 300-plus cities. You chose three, all from the zone of your first pick, and could still be given a different one. City allotment is on 4 January 2027. A two-paper candidate may sit the second paper at a different centre in the same city.
Important Dates
GATE 2027 dates from IIT Madras. These are liable to change.

Result
Results are out on 19 March 2027, after a provisional answer key that can be contested for a fee. PI is held in one session, so raw marks feed the GATE Score (out of 1000), valid for three years. Free scorecard downloads last a limited period; then it's ₹500 per paper until 31 December 2027.
Cut Off
| GATE 2026, PI | Figure |
|---|---|
| Registered | 4,849 |
| Appeared | 3,673 |
| Qualifying mark, General | 36 |
| Qualifying mark, OBC-NCL / EWS | 32.4 |
| Qualifying mark, SC / ST / PwD | 24 |
For General, the mark is the mean plus one standard deviation of everyone's marks, bounded by 25 and 40. OBC-NCL/EWS candidates need 90% of it, SC/ST/PwD two-thirds. A small paper with a strong field can end up with a high qualifying mark, as PI did in 2026. Admission cut-offs are set separately by each institute.
Preparation Tips
- Manufacturing (sections 3 and 4) is the core of PI. Metal cutting, forming and welding numericals come up every year.
- Operations research and production planning are where PI differs most from ME. Practise LP, inventory and forecasting problems.
- Quality control and reliability are short and scoring; learn the control chart and sampling formulas.
- General engineering is broad but shallow. Revise the ME basics rather than going deep.
- Answer every MSQ and NAT, since they carry no negative marks.
- Solve the PI papers from 2024 to 2026 on the GATE download page under exam timing.
