Indian Navy Agniveer Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility
160 topics across 5 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
Agniveer is the four year engagement through which the Indian Navy now recruits its sailors. There isn't one Agniveer exam but four separate entries, each with its own qualification, trades and written paper.
| Entry | Qualification | Branches or trades |
|---|---|---|
| Agniveer (SSR) Senior Secondary Recruit | 10+2 with Mathematics and Physics, or a three year engineering diploma, or a two year vocational course with Physics and Mathematics; 50 per cent aggregate | Seaman, Communication, Electrical, Engineering, Naval Aviation, Logistics (Material) and (Finance and Administration) |
| Agniveer (MR) Matric Recruit | Matriculation, 50 per cent aggregate | Logistics (Chef), Logistics (Steward), Hygienist |
| Agniveer {MR (Musician)} | Matriculation, 50 per cent, plus musical ability | Musician |
| Agniveer (Apprentice) | Matriculation at 50 per cent plus a three year AICTE diploma at 50 per cent in a named discipline | Engineering, Electrical |
SSR (Medical Assistant) is not an Agniveer entry, though it shares the SSR name, the two stage selection and the physical standards. The Navy's calendar lists it under Eligibility Criteria for Other Entries with the footnote "Initial engagement subject to successful completion of training, for a period of 20 years".
The four years
- Service is four years including training.
- Pay is a customised package, ₹30,000 a month in year one rising to ₹40,000 in year four.
- On exit, a Seva Nidhi package of ₹10.04 lakh, tax free, excluding interest.
- No Provident Fund, gratuity or pension. Life insurance cover of ₹48 lakh, free.
High performers can compete for officer commissioning schemes, and those retained beyond the four years can be promoted through the non-commissioned ranks.
Agniveer (Apprentice) is the newest entry, published on the Navy's site on 12 August 2026, and the only one that needs a diploma.

Exam Pattern
Stage I and Stage II
| Stage | What it is |
|---|---|
| Stage I | A computer based online exam (INET), or in some batches screening on qualifying exam marks. The advertisement for each batch says which |
| Stage II | The written exam, taken with the Physical Fitness Test and the recruitment medical |
The Stage II written paper, by entry
| Entry | Sections | Duration | Standard |
|---|---|---|---|
| Agniveer (SSR) | Four: Science, Mathematics, English, General Awareness | 60 minutes | 12th level |
| Agniveer (MR) | Two: Science and Mathematics together, and General Awareness | 30 minutes | 10th level |
| Agniveer {MR (Musician)} | A Written Test, plus a Music Screening Test | Not published | Matriculation level |
| Agniveer (Apprentice) | Only a Stage I online exam syllabus is published | Not published | Diploma level |
Both published papers are objective and bilingual, Hindi and English.
Pass every section
The Navy's instruction is the same for every entry: candidates must pass in all sections as well as in the aggregate. In the MR paper each section is half the paper.
The Navy doesn't publish the number of questions, marks per question, negative marking or sectional pass marks for any entry. Its sample papers (see Sample Papers) are the only guide to the shape of the paper.
For Agniveer {MR (Musician)}, shortlisting is always on Matriculation marks, so there's no online paper to recover on.

| Electrical | Electrical; Electronics and Communication; Instrumentation Technology; Electronics; Electrical and Electronics; Electronics Instrumentation and Control Engineering |
If you're awaiting a board result you can apply, but you're selected only if you produce the original marksheet at Stage II (an internet copy won't do) with the minimum marks in aggregate and in each subject for your category.
Age
The Navy's own documents disagree. Its entry pages (updated 2 September 2026) say 17½ to 22 years on the day of enrolment for SSR, MR and Apprentice. Its 2026 recruitment calendar says 17½ to 21 for SSR, MR, Musician and SSR (Medical Assistant), and calls itself a broad guideline, pointing to the Employment News notification. If you're near the upper limit, go by the advertisement for your batch. Age is counted on the day of enrolment.
Physical Fitness Test (qualifying, no marks)
| Event | Male | Female |
|---|---|---|
| 1.6 km run | 6 minutes 30 seconds | 8 minutes |
| Squats (uthak baithak) | 20 | 15 |
| Push-ups | 15 | 10 |
| Bent knee sit-ups | 15 | 10 |
Eyesight
| Uncorrected vision | Corrected vision | Colour perception |
|---|---|---|
| 6/12, 6/12 | 6/6, 6/6 | II |
Spectacles are allowed. PRK, LASIK or SMILE is acceptable if all of these hold:
- Not done before age 20.
- Uncomplicated and at least 12 months before the exam, with a certificate from the eye centre giving the type, date and pre-operative error.
- Axial length 26 mm or less (IOL Master or A Scan).
- Residual corneal thickness at least 450 microns.
- Residual refraction +1.0 D sphere or cylinder or less.
- Pre-operative error not more than plus or minus 6.0 D.
- Normal retina.
Refractive surgery rules out submarine, diving and MARCOS. Radial keratotomy or a phakic intra-ocular lens makes you permanently unfit for all branches.
Height
| Category | Minimum height |
|---|---|
| General standard, men and women | 157 cm |
| Tribals from Ladakh | 155 cm |
| Andaman and Nicobar, Lakshadweep and Minicoy Islands | 155 cm |
| Gorkhas, Nepali, Assamese, Garhwali, Kumaoni and Uttarakhand | 152 cm |
| Bhutan, Sikkim and the North East Region | 152 cm |
Selection Process
| Step | Agniveer (SSR), (MR) and SSR (Medical Assistant) | Agniveer {MR (Musician)} |
|---|---|---|
| Shortlisting | Stage I: online exam (INET) or screening on qualifying marks | Screening on Matriculation marks |
| The tests | Stage II: written exam, Physical Fitness Test, recruitment medical | Physical Fitness Test, Written Test, Music Screening Test, recruitment medical |
| Induction | Induction and final recruitment medical at INS Chilka, Odisha | |
| Training | Ab initio training at INS Chilka, then the Navy's professional schools | |
Both Stage I routes are in use: the Navy's login list carries AVR (SSR/MR) - INET 2025 and AVR (SSR/MR) - INET 2026. In a batch screened on marks, your school percentage is the shortlist, not just a 50 per cent threshold.
Stage II is one visit with three gates: the paper, the fitness test and the medical, plus document checks. The final medical at INS Chilka comes after all of that, and you can still be found unfit there.
The Music Screening Test asks you to sing and match pitch with notes on a keyboard, clap back a short rhythm, sing a well known song in tune, play a prepared piece, sight-read Indian or Western classical notation, and know taal, raag and scales.
Your branch or trade is allotted by the needs of the service, not by your choice.
Salary
| Year | Package, monthly | In hand, 70 per cent | To the Agniveer Corpus Fund, 30 per cent | Government's matching contribution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st year | ₹30,000 | ₹21,000 | ₹9,000 | ₹9,000 |
| 2nd year | ₹33,000 | ₹23,100 | ₹9,900 | ₹9,900 |
| 3rd year | ₹36,500 | ₹25,550 | ₹10,950 | ₹10,950 |
| 4th year | ₹40,000 | ₹28,000 | ₹12,000 | ₹12,000 |
| Total in the Corpus Fund | ₹5.02 lakh | ₹5.02 lakh |
On exit you get the Seva Nidhi package of ₹10.04 lakh (excluding interest), free of income tax. Risk and hardship, dress and travel allowances are paid on top. You don't contribute to a Provident Fund, and there's no gratuity or pension.
Insurance and compensation
Life cover of ₹48 lakh, non-contributory, for the whole engagement.
| Death | Next of kin receives |
|---|---|
| On duty (category Y: attributable to service, or accident on duty including training; category Z: enemy, terrorist or anti-social action, war, peacekeeping, aid to civil power, battle inoculation, notified operations) | Insurance of ₹48 lakh; ex-gratia of ₹44 lakh; full pay for the unserved period up to four years including the Seva Nidhi component; the Seva Nidhi balance with government contribution and interest |
| Not on duty (category X: natural causes not linked to service) | Insurance of ₹48 lakh and the Seva Nidhi balance with government contribution and interest |
For permanent disability, the accepted percentage is rounded up: 20 to 49 per cent counts as 50, 50 to 75 counts as 75, and 76 to 100 counts as 100. Where it's attributable to service, ex-gratia is ₹44 lakh, ₹25 lakh or ₹15 lakh at 100, 75 or 50 per cent, plus pay for the unserved period and the Seva Nidhi balance.
Details: pay scale and insurance and compensation.
How to Apply
Apply online only at joinindiannavy.gov.in. There's a separate registration and login for each entry and each cycle (currently Officer, AVR MR (Musician), AVR (SSR/MR), SSR (Medical) and AVR (Apprentice), each with 2025 and 2026 logins). An old login doesn't carry over.
Each batch has its own advertisement on the site and in Employment News, and windows are often extended:
| Entry and batch | What the Navy announced |
|---|---|
| AVR (SSR), AVR (MR) and SSR (Medical) for INET 26 | Applications live from 14 March 2026. Now closed |
| AVR MR (Musician) 02/26 batch | Window extended to 30 April 2026 |
| Agniveer SSR and MR 01/27 batch | Stage II call up letters by September 2026 |
Get these right in the form:
- E-mail and mobile number. The Navy contacts candidates only electronically. Don't change either until selection is over.
- Exam centre, subject to availability.
- Qualifying exam marks, which may be the shortlist.
- Category, which sets your minimum marks.
The Navy recruits directly. Anyone promising selection is a fraud.
Participating Institutes
The Navy recruits for itself.
| Body | Role |
|---|---|
| Directorate of Manpower Planning and Recruitment (DMPR), Naval Headquarters | Advertisement, online application, exam and enrolment |
| INS Chilka, on Chilika Lake, Odisha | Induction, final medical, and ab initio training for every sailor and Agniveer |
| The Navy's professional schools | Trade and branch training after INS Chilka |
The work, in the Navy's words
| Entry | Work |
|---|---|
| SSR | Serving on aircraft carriers, guided missile destroyers and frigates, replenishment ships, submarines and aircraft; operating radars, sonars and communications, or firing missiles, guns and rockets |
| MR: Chef | Preparing food to the menu, vegetarian and non-vegetarian including meat, and accounting of ration |
| MR: Steward | Serving in officers' messes, housekeeping, accounting of funds, wine and stores, preparing the menu |
| MR: Hygienist | Hygiene in washrooms and other areas |
| MR: Musician | Playing instruments in naval bands |
| Apprentice: Engineering | Propulsion engines, auxiliary power systems, damage control gear and a warship's mechanical systems |
| Apprentice: Electrical | Power distribution, radar systems, automated control circuits and communications suites |
Every MR trade is also trained in firearms and given other duties, including lookout, small arms and the ship's landing and boarding parties.
Queries: sailor@navy.gov.in (sailors and Agniveers), officer@navy.gov.in (officers).
Exam Centres
| Stage | Where | Who chooses |
|---|---|---|
| Stage I, online exam | An exam centre | You opt, subject to availability |
| Stage II: paper, fitness test, medical | A Stage II centre | The Navy, named in your call up letter |
| Induction, final medical, ab initio training | INS Chilka, Odisha | Fixed |
| Professional training | The Navy's professional schools | By your trade |
Plan for Stage II to take more than a day, and arrive ready to run 1.6 km inside the standard.
Important Dates
The Navy recruits in numbered batches, each with its own advertisement, window and stage dates. The number carries the induction year: 01/27 is the first batch inducting in 2027.
As at September 2026:
- Applications for AVR (SSR), AVR (MR) and SSR (Medical) for INET 26 opened on 14 March 2026 and have closed.
- The AVR MR (Musician) 02/26 window was extended to 30 April 2026 and has closed.
- Stage II call up letters for the SSR and MR 01/27 batch were due by September 2026.
So a March application leads to a batch inducting the following year. New batches are announced on joinindiannavy.gov.in and in Employment News. The Navy's 2026 recruitment calendar (PDF) lists every entry ahead of the advertisements.
Admit Card
The call up letter cum admit card for each stage (Stage I, Stage II and joining at INS Chilka) is downloaded from your login on joinindiannavy.gov.in. Nothing comes by post.
Look in the right portal. There are separate logins for AVR (SSR/MR) - INET 2025, AVR (SSR/MR) - INET 2026, SSR (Medical) - INET 2025, SSR (Medical) - INET 2026, AVR MR (Musician) and AVR (Apprentice).
If you applied awaiting a board result, bring the original marksheet to Stage II.
Result
Results appear in your login on joinindiannavy.gov.in, with a message to your registered e-mail and mobile. Stage I decides who goes to Stage II; Stage II decides who is called for induction; enrolment follows the final medical at INS Chilka.
The Navy publishes no cut-offs, scorecards or candidate counts for Agniveer entries. Stage announcements also appear in the news section of the home page.
Cut Off
The Navy publishes no cut-off marks for any Agniveer entry, and hasn't in past cycles. Any figure you see elsewhere didn't come from the Navy.
What it does publish is the rules: pass every section of the written paper and the aggregate, clear the Physical Fitness Test, and meet the eyesight and height standards. In batches screened on school marks, the effective line is wherever the field puts it. Those rules are on the written exam instructions and selection procedure pages.
Preparation Tips
1. Pick the right entry
| If you have | Apply to |
|---|---|
| 10+2 with Mathematics and Physics, an engineering diploma, or a vocational course with Physics and Mathematics | Agniveer (SSR) |
| Class 10 only | Agniveer (MR), or Musician if you play |
| Class 10 plus a three year AICTE diploma in a listed discipline | Agniveer (Apprentice) |
| 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology at 50 per cent aggregate and 40 per cent in each | SSR (Medical Assistant), a twenty year engagement, not Agniveer |
2. Don't let one section sink you
You must pass every section. For SSR candidates from a Physics and Maths background, the risk is English and General Awareness.
3. Finish the closed parts
SSR English is a fixed list of grammar points, with no essay or literature. MR Science and Maths is class 10 material. The static GA lists (capitals, currencies, abbreviations, national symbols, awards, personalities) can be memorised.
4. Reasoning hides inside SSR General Awareness
Spatial, numerical, associative ability, sequences, spellings, unscrambling, coding and decoding. Drill it.
5. SSR maths is class 11 and 12
Calculus, conic sections, matrices, complex numbers, probability, 3D geometry. A 10th level book won't do.
6. Practise against the clock
Sixty minutes for four sections, or thirty for two. Decide your time split in advance.
7. Use the Navy's sample papers
Mark them section by section, not as a total.
8. Train for all four fitness events
The push-ups, squats and sit-ups catch more people than the run. Start early.
9. Settle eyesight before you apply
If you've had refractive surgery, check the seven conditions under Eligibility. Radial keratotomy and phakic lenses are permanent bars.
Sample Papers
The Navy lists official sample question papers and the written exam syllabus for SSR and MR on the Agniveer (SSR) and Agniveer (MR) pages. When checked in October 2026 the PDF links on those pages returned "not found", so look there again before a batch opens.
Apprentice and SSR (Medical Assistant) have no sample papers as of now. The sample papers are the only documents that show how many questions to expect.
