ITBP Head Constable Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility

127 topics across 4 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.

Head Constable in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police is not one examination. It is eight separate entries that happen to share a rank. ITBP's Scheme of Recruitment lists Head Constable (Education and Stress Counsellor), (Telecommunication), (Dresser Veterinary), (Motor Mechanic), (Master), (Workshop), (Engine Driver) and (Midwife) as eight distinct rows, each with its own age band, its own qualification, its own written test and, in two cases, its own idea of whether a physical test is held at all.

What they share is the rank and the money: Pay Level 4, entry pay ₹25,500, one level above a constable. Choosing between them is choosing a trade and a syllabus, not a salary.

The eight entries at a glance

Head Constable cadreAgeWritten testPET?
Education and Stress Counsellor20 to 25100 marks, 2 hours, five sections of 20Yes
Telecommunication18 to 25100 marks, 2 hours, five sections of 20Yes
Dresser Veterinary18 to 25100 marks, 2 hours, two parts of 50Yes
Motor Mechanic18 to 2550 marks, no duration statedYes
Master18 to 25100 marks, 2 hours, four sections of 25Yes
Workshop18 to 25100 marks, 2 hours, four sections of 25Yes
Engine Driver18 to 25100 marks, 2 hours, four sections of 25Yes
Midwife18 to 25100 marks, syllabus not publishedNo

The qualification for each is in the eligibility section; they range from matriculation with an ANM course to a university degree.

One entry asks for a degree. Education and Stress Counsellor is the only cadre requiring one, and the only one whose age band starts at 20.

One entry has no syllabus and no physical test. Against Head Constable (Midwife) the written test cell reads, in full, "100 Marks- Syllabus for written examination is being decided by Director (Medical) ITBP". Four other ITBP posts carry the same line. The same row has a dash where every other Head Constable row lists a run and two jumps, and its stage list starts with document verification instead of a height bar, with a skill test and a viva-voce that no other Head Constable entry has.

What ITBP is

A Central Armed Police Force under the Ministry of Home Affairs, raised on 24 October 1962, guarding 3,488 km of the India-China border from the Karakoram Pass in Ladakh to Jachep La in Arunachal Pradesh, with deployments the Force describes as running from 9,000 ft to 18,700 ft. Head Constables are the first supervisory rank and a battalion's technical backbone: the signaller, the fitter, the boat master, the veterinary dresser.

Two more names appear on the recruitment portal that the scheme does not carry, Head Constable (Combatant Ministerial) and Head Constable (CSRA). Their standards are in their own advertisements.

Exam Pattern

Four different papers are set at Head Constable level, and a fifth entry has no published paper at all. Find your cadre first.

Pattern A, five sections of 20: Education and Stress Counsellor, Telecommunication

Note what is not in it. A Telecommunication candidate who qualified on a three year Electronics diploma sits a paper with no technical section whatsoever: the diploma is an eligibility filter, not a syllabus. Same at Education and Stress Counsellor, where a Psychology graduate is asked no Psychology.

Pattern B, four sections of 25: Master, Workshop, Engine Driver

The same 100 marks, four ways instead of five. Pattern B has no reasoning section; those 20 marks go into larger English, Hindi, general knowledge and arithmetic blocks. All three cadres carry a separate trade test.

Pattern C, two parts of 50: Dresser Veterinary

The only Head Constable paper with a genuine professional half. Yaks are named because ITBP works them: a force operating between 9,000 ft and 18,700 ft moves loads on animals that tolerate the altitude. Prepare generic veterinary material and skip yak husbandry and you have prepared for two thirds of that last section.

Pattern D, 50 marks split 35 and 15: Motor Mechanic

SectionMarks
General Knowledge, Language, Literature and General Mathematics35
Trade Theory15
Total50

ITBP states no duration and no question counts here, only marks, and runs four subjects into a single 35 mark block. It is the only Head Constable paper not worth 100 marks and the only one carrying trade theory, and the identical cell appears against Constable (Motor Mechanic).

Midwife: no pattern at all

No section list, no duration, no marking scheme: only "100 Marks- Syllabus for written examination is being decided by Director (Medical) ITBP". The same sentence appears against ASI (Pharmacist), ASI (Laboratory Technician), ASI (Radiographer) and SI (Staff Nurse), the last at 200 marks. Candidates for these five posts work from the advertisement for their cycle.

No Head Constable pattern states negative marking, a qualifying percentage or a sectional minimum.

Syllabus

ITBP names sections and publishes no topics. The general blocks are set at 10+2 level; the professional ones at the level of the candidate's own certificate.

The general sections, in every pattern

General awareness and General Knowledge

Part II for Dresser Veterinary, 50 marks

Sub-sectionMarksWhat to prepare
Veterinary medicines and their use20Common veterinary drug groups: antibiotics, anthelmintics, antiseptics and disinfectants, analgesics and anti-inflammatories, vaccines, fluids and electrolytes. Dose forms, routes of administration, withdrawal periods, storage and the cold chain
Veterinary instruments and their use15Restraint equipment, twitch, mouth gag, trocar and cannula, drenching gun, balling gun, syringes and needles, catheters, thermometer, stethoscope, hoof knife and rasp, castration instruments, dressing and suturing instruments, sterilisation
Diseases, treatment and anatomy of horse, dogs and yaks15 The skeletal, digestive, respiratory and reproductive anatomy of these three animals; common infectious, parasitic and nutritional diseases of each; wound dressing and first aid; lameness and hoof care in the horse; the specific problems of working animals at high altitude

Trade Theory for Motor Mechanic, 15 marks

  • Petrol and diesel engine construction and the four stroke cycle
  • Fuel system: pump, filter, injector, injection pump, carburettor
  • Cooling and lubrication systems and their faults
  • Clutch, gearbox, propeller shaft, differential and axles
  • Brake systems, hydraulic and air; steering and suspension
  • Electrical system: battery, alternator, starter, ignition, lighting and fuses
  • Fault diagnosis and workshop practice; tools and measuring instruments; micrometer and vernier reading
  • Scheduled servicing, preventive maintenance and workshop safety

The published NCVT trade theory papers for Mechanic Motor Vehicle are set at exactly this level and also suit the trade test. Pattern B names Literature inside its Hindi and English blocks, so Master, Workshop and Engine Driver candidates should not skip the literary half of the school syllabus in either language.

Midwife, where no syllabus is published

The entry requires Nursing Council registration and an Auxiliary Nursing Midwifery course, so the examinable ground is the ANM curriculum: anatomy and physiology, midwifery and obstetric nursing, antenatal, intranatal and postnatal care, the newborn, family welfare and contraception, immunisation, community health nursing, nutrition, first aid and the maternal and child health programmes. That is read off the eligibility, not published by ITBP.

Eligibility Criteria

Eight cadres, eight rows in ITBP's Scheme of Recruitment. The qualification is where they differ most, and it is the first thing to settle.

Age

CadreAge bandGovernment servant relaxation
Education and Stress Counsellor20 to 25Up to 5 years
Telecommunication18 to 25Up to 5 years
Midwife18 to 25Up to 5 years
Dresser Veterinary, Motor Mechanic, Master, Workshop, Engine Driver18 to 25Up to 40 years

Every row except Telecommunication also states 5 years for SC and ST candidates and 3 years for OBC.

Only Education and Stress Counsellor starts at 20, which follows from its degree requirement. The government-servant relaxation is stated as 5 years for some cadres and up to 40 years for others within the same table; that is ITBP's own wording.

Educational and technical qualification, cadre by cadre

CadreEducationalTechnical
Education and Stress CounsellorDegree with Psychology as a subject, OR a degree with Bachelor of Education or Bachelor of Teaching or equivalentNone
TelecommunicationAny one of three routes: 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics at an aggregate of 45 per cent in those three subjects; OR 10th pass plus a two year ITI certificate in Electronics, Electrical or Computer; OR 10th pass with Science plus a three year diploma in Electronics, Communication, Instrumentation, Computer Science, Information Technology or ElectricalCovered by the education routes
Dresser Veterinary12th class or equivalentA regular Para Veterinary Course, or a diploma or certificate of at least one year in Veterinary Therapeutic or Livestock Management from a government recognised institute
Motor Mechanic12th passA Motor Mechanic certificate from a recognised institution or ITI with three years practical experience in a reputed workshop, OR a three year diploma in Automobile Engineering
Master10+2Master or Serang certificate, plus one year experience in the trade
Workshop10+2A diploma or certificate in Diesel Engine, Machinist, Welder, Machine Shop, Carpentry, Electrician, Fitter or Turner from an ITI or other recognised institute, plus one year experience
Engine Driver10+2A 2nd Class Engine Driver Certificate, plus one year experience in the trade
MidwifeMatriculation, and registration with a central or state Nursing CouncilAn Auxiliary Nursing Midwifery course from a recognised institution

Master, Serang and 2nd Class Engine Driver are inland vessel certificates; the Force runs boats and these three cadres crew them. They are the narrowest gates at this rank, and none can be got during an application window.

Physical standards

Every cadre except Midwife carries a height and chest standard, and the tiers differ row by row. The commonest shape, used by Education and Stress Counsellor and Telecommunication:

CategoryHeight, maleHeight, femaleChest, male only
All except those below170 cm157 cm80 cm, expanded 85 cm
Garhwali, Kumauni, Gorkha, Dogra, Maratha, and candidates of Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Leh and Ladakh and the North-Eastern States165 cm155 cm 78 cm, expanded 83 cm
Scheduled Tribes162.5 cm150 cm76 to 77 cm, expanded 81 to 82 cm

The other five rows tier differently, some with separate figures for Scheduled Tribe candidates from the North-Eastern States and Left Wing Extremism affected districts, and Workshop and Engine Driver use a lower chest standard of 75 cm expanding to 80 cm. Read the row for your own cadre. In every band the chest must show a genuine 5 cm expansion.

Physical efficiency test

EventMaleFemale
Race1.6 km in 7 minutes 30 seconds800 m in 4 minutes 45 seconds
Long jump11 feet, three chances9 feet, three chances
High jump3½ feet, three chances3 feet, three chances

Master, Workshop, Engine Driver and Motor Mechanic state only the male standard. Head Constable (Midwife) has no physical efficiency test at all: its cell is a dash and its stage list starts with document verification.

Medical

ITBP's Medical Standards page applies across the Force:

  • No knock knee, flat foot, varicose vein or squint, which ITBP names first.
  • Colour vision. A colour blind person is not eligible, and a serving member later found colour blind is boarded out under the SHAPE policy.
  • Distance vision uncorrected, with correction not permitted for distance.
  • Fourteen dental points minimum.
  • Chest expansion of at least 5 cm with ease, and sound heart and lungs.
  • Hearing and speech sound, with no stammer.
  • Tattoos only as a religious symbol or figure or a name, only on the left forearm or the back of the hand, and only smaller than a quarter of that part of the body.

ITBP also publishes waiting periods after surgery, from one month after a tonsillectomy or deviated nasal septum to six months after abdominal or pelvic surgery, hernia repair or varicocele surgery, and a male body weight table by height and age running from 156 cm to 180 cm. Indian citizenship is required, with a character and antecedents verification before appointment.

Selection Process

ITBP publishes the stage list separately for each cadre, and they are not the same list. Four sequences appear.

Sequence 1: Education and Stress Counsellor

Height bar, physical efficiency test, document verification, physical standards test, written test, detailed medical examination, review medical examination if required. Document verification sits third, so eligibility is settled before the paper.

Sequence 2: Telecommunication, and Dresser Veterinary

The same seven stages with document verification moved from third to fifth: height bar, PET, PST, written test, document verification, DME, RME.

Sequence 3, with a trade test: Motor Mechanic, Master, Workshop, Engine Driver

Eight stages. Motor Mechanic runs height bar, PET, PST, written test, trade test, document verification, DME, RME. Master, Workshop and Engine Driver run height bar, PET, document verification, PST, written test, trade test, DME, RME. In all four the trade test comes after the written test and is pass or fail, so a candidate can top the paper and be stopped on the water or at the bench.

Sequence 4, the medical cadre: Midwife

  1. Document verification
  2. Physical Standards Test
  3. Written examination
  4. Skill test
  5. Viva-voce
  6. Detailed Medical Examination
  7. Review Medical Examination, if required

No height bar, no physical efficiency test, a skill test, which for a midwifery post means a practical clinical assessment, and a viva-voce, the only oral examination at this rank in ITBP. The same sequence serves ASI (Pharmacist), (Laboratory Technician) and (Radiographer) and SI (Staff Nurse): the medical cadres are recruited on qualification, paper, practical skill and interview, not on running.

What is scored

Only the written test. The height bar, PET, PST, document verification, trade test and both medicals are pass or fail, so for seven of the eight cadres the merit list is the written score alone. For Midwife, ITBP publishes the weight of neither the skill test nor the viva-voce.

The height bar and the trade test

The height bar is a gate at the entrance to the ground, applied in seconds; carry the category certificate, because there is a 7.5 cm spread between the 170 cm general standard and the 162.5 cm Scheduled Tribe standard for men. ITBP publishes no content or marking scheme for the trade test. Motor Mechanic is a workshop assessment: diagnosing a fault, dismantling and reassembling an assembly, measuring instruments, questions on tools and servicing. Master and Engine Driver are a practical on the vessel, with questions on the certificate's own syllabus. Workshop is a bench test in the trade the ITI certificate names.

Every sequence ends with the review medical examination, the only appeal ITBP publishes anywhere in this process. A candidate declared unfit at the DME is entitled to a second opinion there.

Salary

Every Head Constable cadre in ITBP is at Pay Level 4, entry pay ₹25,500. The pay matrix lists the eight cadres separately and gives all eight the same figure, so a graduate psychologist and a matriculate midwife are paid the same: the qualification decides which queue you join, not what the post pays. The page is headed "Pay Matrix as on March 2017 (Liable to change due to administrative reasons)", so the level is current while the allowances built on it have been revised repeatedly since.

RankPay LevelEntry pay
Constable, every tradeLevel 3₹21,700
Head Constable, every tradeLevel 4₹25,500
Assistant Sub-InspectorLevel 5₹29,200
Sub-InspectorLevel 6₹35,400
InspectorLevel 7₹44,900
Assistant CommandantLevel 10₹56,100
Deputy CommandantLevel 11₹67,700

Entering at Head Constable rather than Constable is worth ₹3,800 a month in basic pay at entry, and more in practice, because every percentage allowance is computed on the higher basic and the member starts a rank higher on the seniority ladder. A candidate eligible for both a constable trade and a Head Constable trade should apply for the Head Constable one.

On top of basic pay

ITBP publishes no allowance schedule, so this is the standard central government and Central Armed Police Force structure: dearness allowance revised each January and July, house rent allowance by city class or government quarters, transport allowance, ration money, risk and hardship allowance, uniform and kit maintenance, and the high altitude and special compensatory allowances, substantial in a Force deployed between 9,000 ft and 18,700 ft. Non-cash: unit accommodation, canteen, medical cover, leave travel concession and group insurance.

Pension and promotion

New appointments fall under the National Pension System, the employee contributing 10 per cent of basic pay and dearness allowance and the government 14 per cent. Gratuity and leave encashment continue separately.

From Head Constable the path runs to Assistant Sub-Inspector at Level 5 and Sub-Inspector at Level 6, on seniority and departmental examination within the cadre, with the Modified Assured Career Progression scheme providing financial upgradation where a promotion has not come. The technical cadres are narrow by design: a Head Constable (Master) is promoted within the boat cadre.

How to Apply

Applications go only through recruitment.itbpolice.nic.in. There is no offline route and no other portal. ITBP also publishes this warning:

...no fee is charged from candidates to qualify in any stage of recruitment, selection in ITBP or while joining the Force. Do not fall prey to such fraudsters posing himself as member of the Force or otherwise and ask you for money.

Creating the account

The account comes first and the application second. ITBP calls the registered e-mail address unchangeable, and every later communication goes to it, so pick one you will still be reading in two years. Name, e-mail and date of birth cannot be edited after registration; everything else can be corrected up to submission and nothing at all after it.

The fee

Head Constable is a Group C post, so the fee is ₹100; Group B is ₹200 and Group A ₹400. The exemption runs: "No fee is being charged from candidates belonging to SC/ST community, Ex-serviceman and women." Read it carefully. Every woman candidate is exempt, whatever her category, as is every ex-serviceman. Payment is online only, and a duplicate payment against one application number is refunded automatically within three or four days.

What is uploaded

  • Photograph and signature, as .jpg or .jpeg only. Colour or black and white are both fine; poor quality is a ground for rejection. The site previews the upload and allows unlimited re-uploads before submission.
  • No certificates. Nothing is uploaded at registration or application; every document named in the notification is checked in person at document verification.

In any correspondence ITBP asks you to quote the post, the advertisement number, the registered e-mail address, your name, father's name, date of birth and the roll or reference number. Keep the fee receipt: it is the evidence the Force asks for if a payment is disputed. The submitted application can be printed from My Applications at any time, including after the closing date. Helpline 011-24369482 and 011-24369483, 09:30 to 18:00 Monday to Friday.

Participating Institutes

There is one recruiting authority. The Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force is a Central Armed Police Force under the Ministry of Home Affairs, raised on 24 October 1962, and it recruits Head Constable itself rather than through SSC, which conducts the Constable (General Duty) examination for eight forces at once.

Where the Force works

ITBP guards the India-China border from the Karakoram Pass in Ladakh to Jachep La in Arunachal Pradesh, a frontage the Force gives as 3,488 km. Its own description of the posting:

ITBPF deployments range from 9000 ft to 18700 ft in picturesque and rugged mountain terrain which require a certain degree of toughness.

Beyond border guarding the Force lists high altitude and counter-terrorist operations, VIP security, disaster relief, mountaineering, civic action programmes and medical camps.

The five Frontier Headquarters

Two of these sit away from the border their Frontier is named for: Eastern Frontier headquarters is in Lucknow and Central Frontier headquarters is in Bhopal. The Directorate General is at Block II, CGO Complex, Lodhi Road, New Delhi 110003.

Exam Centres

ITBP publishes no standing list of examination cities. The centre is named on the admit card for each stage, and the stages are not all held in the same place.

  • The physical and documentation stages are held at recruitment centres the Force runs itself, normally at a Frontier Headquarters or a battalion location under it. Those are the five addresses listed under Participating institutes, and a candidate may be called to a Frontier a long way from home.
  • The computer based written test runs on a commercial test centre network, which is why the home page carries a separate mock test link, a separate admit card link and a separate helpline for it.

What to carry

ITBP collects no document online, so the document folder is the one thing that cannot be replaced on the day. Carry the printed online application, the admit card, the matriculation certificate for date of birth, the educational and technical certificates the post requires, the category certificate in the prescribed central government format, and the experience certificate the technical qualification column names. On category certificates the Force's standing instruction is:

Candidates desirous of availing SC/ST/OBC (NON creamy layers) EWS benefits at the time of recruitments or at a later stage shall produce a valid certificate to that effect at the time of DV/DME/RME.

Important Dates

No Head Constable advertisement is live, and at least five Head Constable recruitments from 2023 and 2024 have not reached their written test. That is the position as at 12 September 2026, taken from ITBP's own home page, whose standing notice reads:

Process of Written Examination / Computer Based Test (CBT) of ... Head Constable (Education & Stress Counsellor) recruitment- 2024, Head Constable & Constable (Motor Mechanic) recruitment- 2024, ... Sub Inspector / Head Constable & Constable (Telecommunication) recruitment- 2024, ... Head Constable (CSRA) recruitment 2023 & 2024 and Head Constable (Midwife & Veterinary) recruitment 2023 & 2024 is under active consideration and same will be conveyed to all eligible candidates, in due course of time.

Telecommunication, with the SI and constable cadres2024Written test not held
CSRA2023 and 2024Written test not held
Midwife and Veterinary2023 and 2024Written test not held

Earlier cycles did progress a long way without a paper: the home page has carried admit card links for documentation and DME, skill tests and PET/PST from 2022-23. Physical stages, documentation, medicals and skill tests all happen. The written test is the bottleneck.

Several names in those notices decode to posts the Scheme of Recruitment does not carry: HC (CM) is Head Constable (Combatant Ministerial), ASI (Steno) is Assistant Sub-Inspector (Stenographer), and HC (CSRA) matches no row either. SI (ESC) appears although the scheme carries Education and Stress Counsellor only at Head Constable level. Read the advertisement for the cycle; the table is not exhaustive.

ITBP publishes no annual recruitment calendar. An advertisement appears when a cadre is to be filled, the window runs for roughly a month, and each stage is announced as it comes. So register at recruitment.itbpolice.nic.in in advance, and get the certificate: a Master or Serang certificate, a 2nd Class Engine Driver Certificate, a Nursing Council registration or a para-veterinary diploma takes months to a year and cannot be arranged inside an application window.

Admit Card

Admit cards are issued stage by stage, not once for the whole recruitment, and only from the account created at registration.

  1. Log in at recruitment.itbpolice.nic.in with the registered e-mail address and password.
  2. Open My Application.
  3. Download the admit card for the stage now open, and print it.

There is no public download link, and ITBP has had to say so in capitals on its home page: "FOR DOWNLOADING ADMIT CARD ... MUST LOG IN THEIR ACCOUNT IN ITBP RECRUITMENT OFFICIAL WEBSITE AND DOWNLOAD THEIR ADMIT CARD VIA MY APPLICATION."

Before the written test, sit the mock test on the same home page. It uses the interface the real test uses. A separate helpline, +91 95132 51988, handles admit card download problems and the objection window. If the account will not open, ITBP's own advice is to check the browser first, enable JavaScript and disable the pop-up blocker, then write to comdtrect[at]itbp[dot]gov[dot]in with the details so it can call back.

Result

ITBP publishes very little in the way of results. As at 12 September 2026 the NEWS and RESULTS panels on the recruitment home page read "Currently there are no news to display" and "Currently there are no results to display".

In practice a stage outcome reaches a candidate as the appearance of the next stage's admit card inside the account at recruitment.itbpolice.nic.in. There is often no separate result list and no SMS beyond one telling you to check the site.

For the computer based test ITBP does run a short objection window, announced on the home page with a link to the answer key and the helpline number beside it. Five Head Constable recruitments from the 2023 and 2024 cycles are still awaiting that test, so no result is due for them yet.

Cut Off

ITBP publishes no cut-off marks for the posts it recruits itself, and has not done so in any past cycle. Nothing is released after a recruitment closes, and there is no archive to look in.

What is on the record is the structure. Only the written test is scored: the height bar, the physical standards test, the physical efficiency test, the trade test, the skill test and both medicals are pass or fail, so for seven of the eight cadres the merit list is the written mark alone. For Midwife the weight of the skill test and the viva-voce is not published either.

For a sense of competitive pressure in the same recruiting space, the Staff Selection Commission does publish cut-offs for its Constable (General Duty) examination, which ITBP takes its General Duty constables from, at ssc.gov.in under Results, usually two to three months after the paper. It is a different examination at a different rank, so read it as background rather than as a target.

Preparation Tips

1. Identify your cadre before you buy a book

Four different papers are set at this rank. Pattern A has a reasoning section; Pattern B does not. Pattern C is half veterinary. Pattern D is 50 marks with trade theory. A generic "ITBP Head Constable" guide may have prepared you for someone else's paper.

2. Pattern B candidates: skip reasoning, double the languages

Master, Workshop and Engine Driver sit General Knowledge, Simple Arithmetic, General English and Hindi at 25 marks each, with no reasoning section. English and Hindi are half the paper between them, more than most competitive papers give them.

3. Pattern A candidates: reasoning is a fifth of the paper

Education and Stress Counsellor and Telecommunication get 20 marks of Simple Reasoning. ITBP calls it simple and means it: series, analogy, coding, blood relations, direction sense and the non-verbal figure questions. It is the most improvable section, because the question types are finite.

4. Your technical qualification is not the syllabus

A three year Electronics diploma gets a Telecommunication candidate into the hall and then has no bearing on the paper, which has no technical section. Same with the Psychology degree at Education and Stress Counsellor. Prepare general studies, not your own subject.

5. Dresser Veterinary: learn the yak

Part II's last section is "general knowledge of diseases, treatment and anatomy of horse, dogs and yaks", 15 marks of a 100 mark paper. A standard veterinary text has horses and dogs everywhere and yaks almost nowhere. Look for high altitude livestock material.

6. Motor Mechanic and Midwife: the stage after the paper

For Motor Mechanic, trade theory is 15 of the 50 marks, so the paper is not where it is won; the trade test that follows is pass or fail and can end a candidacy after a strong paper. Work in a workshop beforehand. For Midwife, ITBP publishes no syllabus at all, only that the Director (Medical) is deciding it, so work from the ANM curriculum, and give the skill test and the viva-voce as much weight as the paper.

7. The free marks, the languages and the clock

ITBP's own facts are free marks in general awareness and none of them change: raised 24 October 1962, 3,488 km from the Karakoram Pass to Jachep La, deployments from 9,000 ft to 18,700 ft, motto Shaurya, Dridhata, Karm Nishtha, five Frontier headquarters. Every pattern except Midwife tests English and Hindi separately, and candidates strong in one and weak in the other lose more there than anywhere else. Run against a clock: 1.6 km in 7 minutes 30 seconds for men is 4 minutes 41 seconds a kilometre. And check colour vision, distance vision and 14 dental points with an optician and a dentist now, not at the DME.

Sample Papers

ITBP releases no previous question papers. There is no archive on the recruitment website, no sample paper against any of the thirty one posts, and no answer key left up after an objection window closes. Anything sold as a previous year ITBP paper is a reconstruction.

The one practice resource the Force publishes is a mock test of the computer based test, on the home page at recruitment.itbpolice.nic.in. It rehearses the interface, not the questions, and goes up when a computer based test is near.

For question practice the closest published papers are the SSC Constable (GD) papers for the general sections of every pattern, and, for the Motor Mechanic trade section and its trade test, the free NCVT ITI trade theory papers for Mechanic Motor Vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ITBP Head Constable one examination?

No. The Scheme of Recruitment lists eight separate Head Constable cadres: Education and Stress Counsellor, Telecommunication, Dresser Veterinary, Motor Mechanic, Master, Workshop, Engine Driver and Midwife. Each has its own age band, qualification and written test, and four different paper patterns are used across the eight. They share the rank and the pay, Level 4 at ₹25,500.

What is the salary of an ITBP Head Constable?

Pay Level 4, entry pay ₹25,500, identical across all eight cadres, with dearness and the other allowances on top. Entering at Head Constable rather than Constable is worth ₹3,800 a month in basic pay at entry, and more in practice because every percentage allowance is computed on the higher basic.

Which Head Constable entry needs a degree?

Only Education and Stress Counsellor: a degree with Psychology as a subject, or a degree with a Bachelor of Education or Bachelor of Teaching. It is also the only cadre whose age band starts at 20 rather than 18.

Why is there no syllabus for Head Constable (Midwife)?

The cell reads, in full, "100 Marks- Syllabus for written examination is being decided by Director (Medical) ITBP". The same sentence appears against four other ITBP posts. Candidates work from the advertisement for their cycle, and meanwhile from the ANM curriculum.

Is there a physical test for every cadre?

No. Head Constable (Midwife) has no physical efficiency test and no height bar, and its stage list starts with document verification. Every other cadre runs a height bar and a PET of 1.6 km in 7 minutes 30 seconds for men, with an 11 foot long jump and a 3½ foot high jump.

Which entry has an interview?

Only Midwife: a skill test and a viva-voce after the written examination, the only oral examination at this rank in ITBP. Their weight in the final ranking is not published.

What is in the Dresser Veterinary paper?

One hundred marks in two hours, in two parts of 50. Part I is the general block: English, Hindi, general awareness, quantitative aptitude and reasoning, 10 marks each. Part II is professional: veterinary medicines 20 marks, veterinary instruments 15 marks, and "general knowledge of diseases, treatment and anatomy of horse, dogs and yaks" 15 marks. The yak is named because ITBP works animals at altitude.

What do the Master, Workshop, Engine Driver and Motor Mechanic papers carry?

Master, Workshop and Engine Driver sit 100 marks in two hours, four sections of 25: General Knowledge, Simple Arithmetic, General English and Hindi, with no reasoning section and no trade theory; the trade is tested separately, pass or fail. Motor Mechanic sits 50 marks: General Knowledge, Language, Literature and General Mathematics as a single 35 mark block, and Trade Theory for 15, with no duration and no question counts stated.

How much is the application fee?

₹100, Head Constable being a Group C post. Nothing is charged to SC and ST candidates, ex-servicemen or women of every category. Payment is online only, and a duplicate payment against one application number is refunded automatically within three or four days.

When is the next ITBP Head Constable recruitment?

No new advertisement is live as at 12 September 2026, and five Head Constable recruitments from 2023 and 2024 have not reached their written test: Education and Stress Counsellor 2024, Motor Mechanic 2024, Telecommunication 2024, CSRA 2023 and 2024, and Midwife and Veterinary 2023 and 2024, all listed as "under active consideration". There is no annual calendar, so the recruitment website is the only reliable signal.

I cannot find Head Constable (Ministerial) in the scheme. Does ITBP recruit it?

The portal has issued admit cards for HC (Combatant Ministerial) and ASI (Stenographer), and the standing notice names a HC (CSRA) recruitment, but none of the three appears among the thirty one posts in the Scheme of Recruitment. The table is not exhaustive of everything ITBP recruits; for those posts the standards are in the advertisement for the cycle.
