JIPMER Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility, Important Dates
169 topics across 13 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
There is no JIPMER MBBS entrance examination. JIPMER's own MBBS prospectus for 2026-27 says NTA NEET scores will be the basis for admission to Puducherry and Karaikal campuses of JIPMER, and the counselling will be conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) for both campuses. B.Sc. Nursing and Allied Health Sciences also need a NEET (UG) qualification, with counselling run by JIPMER itself. So preparing "for JIPMER" at undergraduate level means preparing for NEET. JIPMER still runs its own entrance examination for its postgraduate, diploma, Ph.D. and fellowship courses.
What JIPMER is
The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research has been under the Government of India since 1956 and was declared an Institution of National Importance by an Act of Parliament, the JIPMER, Puducherry Act, 2008, gazette notified on 14 July 2008. Before that it functioned under the Directorate General of Health Services.
Under clauses 23 and 24 of that Act the Institute awards its own medical degrees, which are deemed to be included in the schedules of the Acts governing the National Medical Commission, the Indian Nursing Council and the Dental Council of India, carrying the same privileges as the equivalent awards of a recognised university.
| Campus | Detail |
|---|---|
| Puducherry | A 195-acre campus in an urban locale, about 170 km by road from Chennai, with a hospital of more than 2,000 beds and a Nursing College |
| Karaikal | Started in 2016-17, about 132 km south of Puducherry city, with a new academic building, separate hostel blocks and clinical material sourced from Karaikal Government Hospital while a multi-specialty hospital is built on campus |
The Institute teaches MBBS, B.Sc., M.Sc., MPH, MD, MS, MDS, DM, M.Ch. and full-time Ph.D. programmes.
For counselling and admission, Puducherry and Karaikal are treated as separate entities, and no transfer or exchange of seats between them is permitted at any later date.
Every route into JIPMER, and which examination governs it

- MCC applies the reservation roster to that seat matrix and publishes the category-wise distribution on its own website.
- Five per cent of seats are reserved horizontally for Persons with Benchmark Disability. If no eligible PwBD candidate is available for a seat, it is filled on merit by a candidate of the same category.
- The number and distribution of seats may vary on directions of the competent authority and the Government of India.
The 64 domicile seats, and the four grounds on which a candidate qualifies for them, are set out under eligibility.

JIPMER Details
Exam Pattern
For MBBS and the B.Sc. courses, the pattern that matters is NEET (UG)'s, set by the National Testing Agency, and JIPMER refers every question of eligibility, qualifying marks, certificates and identity proof to the NTA NEET Information Bulletin.
The entrance examination JIPMER does conduct
For M.Sc., Master of Public Health, Post Basic Diploma, Postgraduate Diploma, Postgraduate Fellowship and the Medical Physics Internship Programme:
| Item | Provision |
|---|---|
| Mode | Computer Based Test only |
| Duration | One hour and thirty minutes |
| Medium | English only |
| Questions | 100 single best response MCQs with four alternatives |
| Marking | Plus 4 for a correct answer, minus 1 for an incorrect answer, zero for an unanswered question |
| Subject | The examination is common to all, but the questions are drawn from the subject of the course applied for, being the B.Sc. curriculum in that discipline, or the MBBS curriculum for the PG Fellowship in Family Planning |
On the response rules: a question answered counts as answered, a question marked for review and answered counts as answered, and a question marked for review and unanswered counts as not answered.
Raw score to percentile
Percentile score = (number of candidates with an aggregate mark less than the candidate × 100) / (number of candidates who appeared), so it is the percentage of candidates who scored below you. The merit list is drawn on that percentile, subject to a minimum of 50, 45 or 40 by category, set out under cut-offs.
Ties, and the rule that rewards accuracy
- The candidate with fewer negative marks is placed higher.
- If a tie remains, the elder candidate by age ranks higher.
Re-evaluation or re-checking is not entertained under any circumstances, and the category given in the application cannot be changed except by a fresh application with a fresh payment before registration closes.
Syllabus
Where the syllabus lives
| Course | Syllabus |
|---|---|
| MBBS and B.Sc. | The NEET (UG) syllabus, published by the National Testing Agency. JIPMER publishes no syllabus of its own for undergraduate admission because it holds no undergraduate entrance examination |
| M.Sc., MPH, PBD, PGD, PGF and the Medical Physics Internship | The undergraduate curriculum of the discipline applied for, named course by course in the prospectus |
The postgraduate entrance syllabus, course by course
JIPMER's entrance examination is common to all candidates in format, but the questions come from the subject of the course:
| Course | Questions drawn from |
|---|---|
| M.Sc. Medical Biochemistry | B.Sc. Biochemistry curriculum |
| M.Sc. MLT (Microbiology) | B.Sc. Medical Lab Technology or Microbiology curriculum |
| M.Sc. MLT (Pathology) | B.Sc. Medical Lab Technology or Pathology curriculum |
| M.Sc. Medical Physiology | B.Sc. Human Physiology curriculum |
| M.Sc. Biostatistics | B.Sc. Statistics curriculum |
| M.Sc. Nursing, and Post Basic Diploma in Nursing | B.Sc. Nursing curriculum |
| Master of Public Health | Population Science, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Health Economics, National Health Programmes, Computer Knowledge and English |
| PG Diploma in Genetic Counseling | Genetics and Reproductive Biology |
| PG Fellowship in Family Planning | MBBS curriculum |
| Medical Physics Internship Programme | M.Sc. Medical Physics curriculum |
Only the MPH paper is built from a list of subjects rather than a single degree curriculum, and it is the only one that tests computer knowledge and English.
The MBBS course itself
Four years and six months, followed by one year of Compulsory Rotatory Internship for the award of the degree.
| Phase | Duration | Subjects |
|---|---|---|
| I | 1 year | Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry |
| II | 1.5 years | Pharmacology, Microbiology, Pathology, Forensic Medicine |
| III | 1 year | Ophthalmology, ENT, Preventive and Social Medicine |
| IV | 1 year | Medicine, Paediatrics, Surgery including Orthopaedics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology |
The academic rules, which are strict
- Maximum duration excluding internship: 9 years.
- Maximum 4 years per phase, and a maximum of 4 attempts per subject, whichever comes first. Failing either, the name is removed from the register of the course.
- 75 per cent attendance or more in scheduled theory and practical classes separately, and at least 30 per cent internal assessment marks in theory and practical separately, to be eligible to sit the professional examination. There is no condonation of attendance.
- In each subject, internal assessment contributes 40 per cent and the final examination 60 per cent, applied to theory and practical separately.
- The final aggregate must be 50 per cent or above in theory and practical separately to pass a subject.
- Passing the previous phase is compulsory before proceeding to the next.
Eligibility Criteria
MBBS
Eligibility is governed by the NTA NEET Information Bulletin: the age limit, minimum marks in the qualifying examination, identity proofs, certificate formats for OBC-NCL, SC, ST and EWS, and the criteria for a candidate with a specified disability. JIPMER adds only the Puducherry UT domicile conditions.
The Puducherry UT domicile quota, which is 64 of the 243 seats
A candidate is treated as domiciled in the Union Territory of Puducherry on any one of four grounds:
- The candidate, or their parents, or their guardian where both parents have died, have been residing continuously in the Union Territory for at least five years immediately preceding the closing date of the NEET application.
- The candidate passed SSLC, HSC or another public examination having studied five successive classes continuously in recognised institutions located in Puducherry immediately preceding the qualifying examination, with residence in Puducherry for five years continuously during that period.
- The candidate's parents are Central or State Government servants, employees of Central autonomous institutions, Defence personnel, Central Paramilitary Forces or employees of public sector undertakings run wholly or substantially by the Central Government or the Puducherry administration, posted and serving in Puducherry for at least three continuous years before the last date of application, and the candidate studied the two-year Higher Secondary Course in a Puducherry school and passed the Higher Secondary Examination from the same school.
- The candidate is a child of Defence personnel killed or disabled in action who declared Puducherry as their home town.
Each of the domicile-linked categories has its own code on the seat matrix: P-UR, P-OBC-NCL, P-SC, P-ST, P-EWS and P-PwBD, each requiring both the ordinary category condition and the domicile condition.
Following the Madras High Court's order in WMP No. 20370 of 2020 in W.P. No. 16285 of 2020, the list of candidates eligible under the Puducherry domicile category is submitted by the Director, DHFWS and Nodal Officer (Medical Education), Government of Puducherry, to the Secretary, Medical Counselling Committee. JIPMER adds that any dispute about a Puducherry residence or community certificate must go to a court of law and will not be dealt with by the Institute.
The category definitions JIPMER applies
- Unreserved: an Indian national satisfying the NEET eligibility requirements.
- OBC (Non-Creamy Layer): the sub-caste must be in the Central list, and the certificate in the NEET Information Bulletin's format. Creamy layer candidates are not eligible.
- SC and ST: certificate in the prescribed format from the competent authority.
- EWS: not covered by SC, ST or OBC reservation, with a gross annual family income below ₹8 lakh from all sources for the previous financial year, and not owning 5 acres of agricultural land or more, a residential flat of 1,000 sq ft or more, a residential plot of 100 sq yards or more in a notified municipality, or 200 sq yards or more elsewhere. Property in different places is clubbed. "Family" means the candidate, their parents and siblings below 18, and their spouse and children below 18.
- PwBD: eligibility to pursue a course in medicine with a specified disability is as laid down in the NEET Information Bulletin. For the B.Sc. courses the minimum degree of disability is 40 per cent, assessed by the JIPMER Medical Board, whose decision is final.
JIPMER's warning is short: candidates submitting false information or forged certificates will be subjected to prosecution, and if confirmed their candidature will be cancelled.
Eligibility for the B.Sc. courses
- Indian national.
- Qualified in NEET (UG) conducted by NTA.
- 17 years completed on or before 31 December of the year of admission. There is no upper age limit, and no relaxation of the lower limit for any category.
- Passed 10+2 or an equivalent after twelve years of study, the last two years comprising Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Botany and Zoology including practicals, with English at a level not below the NCERT core course.
- Passed individually in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English.
- Minimum marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together: 50 per cent for UR and EWS, 45 per cent for UR and EWS PwBD candidates, and 40 per cent for SC, ST and OBC candidates.
Selection Process
MBBS
- Appear in NEET (UG) and meet every condition in the NTA NEET Information Bulletin.
- Register for MCC counselling at mcc.nic.in and choose JIPMER Puducherry or JIPMER Karaikal specifically. They are separate entities, and no transfer or exchange of seats is permitted later.
- Report to the allotted campus within the time in the allotment letter, with originals, one self-attested photocopy set and three passport size colour photographs. A candidate who does not report in time forfeits the right to admission.
MCC applies the reservation roster to JIPMER's seat matrix. Five per cent of seats are reserved horizontally for Persons with Benchmark Disability; an unfilled PwBD seat goes on merit to a candidate of the same category. Seat numbers may vary on directions of the competent authority.
B.Sc. selection, which JIPMER runs itself
- Apply online with the NEET (UG) score card and any category certificate.
- JIPMER publishes an eligible candidates list for counselling on its website.
- Counselling and admission on a notified date, against a published roster point allocation; classes start a few days later.
Postgraduate and diploma courses
The JIPMER entrance examination, then a merit list on percentile. In each category, ten times the number of seats are shortlisted for counselling, with separate merit lists for UR, SC, ST, EWS, OBC, PwD and, for the Post Basic Diploma only, Institute candidates. Sponsored and deputed candidates must sit the examination and secure at least 50 per cent. MD, MS, MDS and the integrated M.Ch. go through INI-CET, and DM and M.Ch. through INI-SS, both counselled by MCC under JIPMER's Prospectus Part B.
No personal intimation is sent at any stage. Every list and date appears on jipmer.edu.in only.

Participating Institutes
The two campuses are two separate admissions
- For counselling and admission, Puducherry and Karaikal campuses of JIPMER are considered as separate entities.
- No transfer or exchange of seats at any later date is permitted.
- Admission is held at the respective campus: the JIPMER Academic Centre in Puducherry, and the new academic building in Karaikal.
A candidate who accepts Karaikal cannot later move to Puducherry, and the two carry different closing ranks, different seat counts and, for the hostel mess, different monthly fees.

Exam Centres
For MBBS and B.Sc., the examination centre, admit card and hall rules are NTA's, for NEET (UG). What happens at JIPMER is reporting for admission, at the JIPMER Academic Centre, Puducherry or the new academic building, JIPMER Karaikal, on the date in the allotment letter.
Examination day, for JIPMER's own entrance test
| Stage | Time |
|---|---|
| Reporting at the venue | 7:00 a.m. |
| Entry closes | 8:15 a.m., and entry is not permitted beyond it under any circumstance |
| Examination | 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. |
| Leaving the hall | Not permitted before 10:30 a.m., except for an acute health problem |
JIPMER adds a warning worth acting on: the examination venues will be in the perimeter of 25 to 30 km from the main city, and candidates are advised to visit the venue the day before to find it.
What you may carry in
- Only the admit card or hall ticket, a valid photo identity proof in original, and a photocopy of that same identity proof. No other paper is allowed inside the hall.
- Accepted identity documents: Aadhaar or e-Aadhaar, passport, nationalised bank passbook with photograph, voter ID, driving licence, PAN card, or another valid Government photo identity. Nothing else is accepted under any circumstances.
- No cell phones, calculators, watches, alarm clocks, digital watches with a built-in calculator or memory, earphones or other electronic gadgets. JIPMER makes no arrangement for safe keeping of anything brought.
- No tea, coffee, cold drinks, food or snacks, and smoking is strictly prohibited.
Identity checks
- Thorough frisking before entry.
- Biometric authentication by digital device, a hard copy signature, and an iris scan or fingerprints on the attendance sheet. Candidates are advised not to wear any colour or mehandi on their fingers, which can interfere with fingerprint capture.
- The candidate is solely responsible for getting the invigilator's signature and seal on the hall ticket. Failure to do so makes them liable for disqualification.
- The candidate must sign the attendance sheet and give a left index finger impression; failing to do so leads to annulment of candidature without prior intimation.
Two provisions with no exceptions
- No re-examination is held by JIPMER under any circumstances for a candidate unable to appear on the scheduled date, for any reason.
- A candidate found using unfair means has their result marked UNFAIR MEANS and is debarred from taking this examination permanently in future. The list covers impersonation, possession of any material or electronic device relevant to the paper, giving or receiving assistance, communicating with anyone but the examination staff, threatening an official or a candidate, and copying.
Important Dates
The admission calendar at JIPMER runs on several clocks
Because different courses are admitted through different examinations, there is no single JIPMER date sheet. These are the 2026 cycle's dates as published by the Institute.

| DM and M.Ch. | Admission process for the July 2026 session, on INI-SS | Notified 23 June 2026 |
The dates that are not JIPMER's to set
- The NEET (UG) examination and result, set by NTA, which govern MBBS and B.Sc. admission.
- The MCC counselling schedule for MBBS, published at mcc.nic.in, which in turn decides when JIPMER's MBBS classes can begin.
- INI-CET and INI-SS schedules for the MD, MS, DM and M.Ch. courses.
JIPMER's standing instruction covers all of them: important dates and any other communication related to admission are notified on the JIPMER website, and no personal intimation will be sent.
Admit Card
For MBBS and B.Sc. the admit card is NTA's NEET admit card, and JIPMER asks for it again, in original, at admission, with the NEET result or rank letter and the provisional allotment letter.
For JIPMER's own entrance examination, the hall ticket is issued through the candidate's login on the JIPMER portal and carries the hall or lab number. No candidate may appear without it and an original photo identity with a photocopy. Getting the invigilator's signature and seal on the hall ticket is the candidate's responsibility, on pain of disqualification, and the hall ticket and the photocopy are handed back before leaving. Notices appear only on the Entrance Examinations and Admissions page.
Result
For MBBS the result that matters is the NEET (UG) result and rank letter from NTA, and the outcome at JIPMER is a provisional allotment letter from MCC. For the B.Sc. courses, JIPMER publishes an eligible list for counselling against a roster point allocation.
For JIPMER's own postgraduate entrance, the list qualifying for counselling is published on the Entrance Examinations and Admissions page with the marks and percentile of each candidate. No letters are sent, re-evaluation is not entertained, and no email or written communication is entertained about falling below the minimum percentile.
Cut Off
JIPMER sets no MBBS cut-off of its own. Admission turns on the NEET (UG) closing rank at which each JIPMER seat is exhausted in counselling, category by category and round by round, which MCC publishes after each round. Puducherry and Karaikal close at different ranks, and only 179 of the 243 seats are open to candidates from outside Puducherry.
The cut-off JIPMER does publish is the minimum percentile in its own postgraduate entrance:
| Category | Minimum percentile |
|---|---|
| Unreserved, EWS, Institute, Sponsored and Deputed | 50 |
| Unreserved PwD | 45 |
| SC, ST, OBC, and PwD within those categories | 40 |
Below it a candidate is not on the merit list at all, and a reserved candidate is considered for an unreserved seat only at 50 percentile or above, with no relaxation.
Preparation Tips
If you want MBBS at JIPMER, prepare for NEET
There is no JIPMER MBBS entrance examination to prepare for. NEET (UG) is the whole of it, and the NTA NEET Information Bulletin governs the age limit, the qualifying marks, the certificate formats and the identity proofs as well.
Then plan the counselling, because that is where JIPMER seats are actually won
- There are 243 MBBS seats, 182 at Puducherry and 61 at Karaikal.
- 64 of them are in the Puducherry UT domicile quota, leaving 179 open seats for the rest of the country.
- Puducherry and Karaikal are separate entities in counselling, and no transfer between them is ever permitted. Rank them in your MCC choices deliberately, not as one option.
- Read JIPMER's prospectus before exercising seat options, which is exactly what the prospectus asks.
If you are from Puducherry
Check which of the four domicile grounds under eligibility you qualify on, and get the proof in order. A claim with no valid proof is a ground for outright rejection.
For B.Sc. Nursing and Allied Health Sciences
NEET (UG) is the gate, but the marks bar in Physics, Chemistry and Biology is separate, and so is the individual pass in English. Use the same email and mobile as your NEET application, match your name to the Class XII mark sheet exactly, and check everything before finalising, since nothing can be changed afterwards.
For JIPMER's own postgraduate entrance examination
- Revise your own undergraduate curriculum. The paper is drawn from the B.Sc. curriculum of the discipline you are applying in, not from a separate syllabus. The MPH paper is the exception, covering Population Science, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Health Economics, National Health Programmes, Computer Knowledge and English.
- 100 questions in 90 minutes, which is 54 seconds a question. Build practice sets to that shape, maximum 400, and track negative marks separately.
- Plus 4, minus 1. A blind guess is negative in expectation, and fewer negative marks is the first tie-breaker. Guess only when you can eliminate.
- Understand the status rules: marked for review and answered counts as answered, but marked for review and unanswered counts as not answered. Do not leave a decided answer sitting in review.
- Aim above the minimum percentile for your category, and remember that a reserved category candidate needs 50 percentile to be considered on an unreserved seat.
Examination day logistics worth taking seriously
- Entry closes at 8:15 a.m. and is not permitted afterwards under any circumstance.
- The venue may be 25 to 30 km from the main city. Visit it the day before, as JIPMER advises.
- Carry only the hall ticket, an original photo identity from the accepted list, and a photocopy of that identity. No other paper is allowed in.
- Do not wear colour or mehandi on your fingers, because of biometric fingerprint capture.
- Get the invigilator's signature and seal on your hall ticket. The candidate is solely responsible, and failing it is liable for disqualification.
- No re-examination is held under any circumstances.
And keep your documents in order from the start
JIPMER rejects admissions on documents, and it lists the grounds: a wrong OBC sub-caste, a missing or misformatted SC or ST certificate, an unproved Puducherry domicile claim, a failure on the NEET age limit or qualifying marks. A certificate in a language other than English needs an English translation attested by a Gazetted Officer. And remember the exit cost: withdrawing a seat carries a ₹10,000 penalty with no refund of fees.
Sample Papers
No sample papers or previous year papers are available from JIPMER as of now. MBBS and B.Sc. admission is on NEET (UG), for which JIPMER sets no paper, and it publishes no papers for its own postgraduate entrance.
The full pattern of that entrance is in the M.Sc., MPH, PBD, PGD and PGF prospectus, published each June.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a JIPMER MBBS entrance exam?
No. JIPMER's own MBBS prospectus states that NTA NEET scores will be the basis for admission to both the Puducherry and Karaikal campuses, and that the counselling will be conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee. There is no separate JIPMER entrance test for MBBS.
Does JIPMER conduct any entrance examination of its own?
Yes. For M.Sc., MPH, Post Basic Diploma, PG Diploma, PG Fellowship and the Medical Physics Internship, and separately for Ph.D. and PDF and PDCC. The MD, MS and MDS courses go through INI-CET and the DM and M.Ch. courses through INI-SS.
What is the pattern of JIPMER's own entrance examination?
A computer based test of one hour and thirty minutes, in English only, with 100 single best response MCQs of four options each. Plus 4 for a correct answer, minus 1 for an incorrect one, zero for an unanswered question.
How many MBBS seats does JIPMER have?
243 for 2026-27: 182 at Puducherry and 61 at Karaikal. Of these, 64 are in the Puducherry UT domicile quota, leaving 179 open seats.
Are Puducherry and Karaikal the same admission?
No. For counselling and admission they are separate entities, and no transfer or exchange of seats at any later date is permitted. Choose deliberately at the MCC option stage.
Who qualifies for the Puducherry UT domicile quota?
Any one of four grounds: five years' continuous residence in the Union Territory immediately before the NEET application closing date; five successive classes studied in Puducherry with five years' residence; a parent serving in Puducherry for three continuous years plus two years of Higher Secondary in a Puducherry school with the pass from the same school; or being the child of Defence personnel killed or disabled in action who declared Puducherry as home town.
What does MBBS at JIPMER cost?
₹14,920 at admission and ₹6,770 a year thereafter. The annual tuition fee is ₹1,200. Hostel is ₹20,000 plus one month's mess fee at admission, then ₹12,000 a year for a shared room.
What if I take a seat and then withdraw?
A penalty of ₹10,000 is imposed, before or after the admission order, and the fees already paid are not refunded, unless the candidate is found medically disqualified.
How long is the MBBS course?
Four years and six months, followed by one year of Compulsory Rotatory Internship. The maximum duration excluding internship is 9 years, with at most 4 years per phase and 4 attempts per subject.
What B.Sc. courses does JIPMER offer, and how do I get in?
B.Sc. Nursing and twelve Allied Health Sciences courses, 191 seats in all. You must have qualified NEET (UG), and JIPMER itself runs the counselling on an eligible list published on its website.
What marks do I need for the B.Sc. courses?
In Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together: 50 per cent for UR and EWS, 45 per cent for UR and EWS PwBD, and 40 per cent for SC, ST and OBC. You must also have passed individually in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English.
Is there an age limit?
For the B.Sc. courses, 17 years completed on or before 31 December of the admission year, with no upper age limit and no relaxation of the lower limit for any category. For MBBS the age limit is the one in the NEET Information Bulletin.
What is the minimum percentile for JIPMER's postgraduate entrance?
50 for Unreserved, EWS, Institute, Sponsored and Deputed candidates, 45 for Unreserved PwD, and 40 for SC, ST, OBC and PwD within those categories. A candidate below it is not on the merit list at all.
Can I ask for re-evaluation?
No. The prospectus states that requests for re-evaluation or re-checking will not be entertained under any circumstances.
What happens if I miss the entrance examination?
No re-examination is held by JIPMER under any circumstances, for any reason.
How will I be told my result?
Through www.jipmer.edu.in. JIPMER states across its prospectuses that individual letters will not be sent and that no personal intimation is given, for eligible lists, shortlists, results or counselling dates alike.
