Exam Pattern
Four phases: a Preliminary for screening, a Main of 300 objective marks plus a 25 mark descriptive, a 60 mark Interview, and a Pre-Recruitment Medical Examination. This is the Generalist pattern; the Specialist papers differ, as set out under Syllabus.
Phase I: Preliminary
| Section | Questions | Marks | Medium | Minimum, SC/ST/PwBD | Minimum, others | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reasoning Ability | 35 | 35 | English and Hindi | 16 | 18 | 20 minutes |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 35 | 35 | English and Hindi | 16 | 18 | 20 minutes |
| English Language, grammar, vocabulary and comprehension | 30 | 30, qualifying only | English | 9 | 10 | 20 minutes |
| Total | 100 | 70 counted | 1 hour |
No negative marking, and each section must be passed separately. About 20 times the vacancies in each category go through to the Main, and Preliminary marks do not enter the final merit list.
Phase II: Main
| Section | Questions | Marks | Minimum, SC/ST/PwBD | Minimum, others | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reasoning Ability | 30 | 90 | 40 | 45 | 40 minutes |
| General Knowledge, Current Affairs | 30 | 60 | 27 | 30 | 20 minutes |
| Data Analysis and Interpretation | 30 | 90 | 40 | 45 | 40 minutes |
| Insurance and Financial Market Awareness | 30 | 60 | 27 | 30 | 20 minutes |
| Objective total | 120 | 300 | 2 hours | ||
| English Language Descriptive: emails, reports, situation analysis and precis writing | 2 | 25, qualifying only | 9 | 10 | 30 minutes |
The objective sections are in English and Hindi; the descriptive is in English, typed, straight after the objective test, and is read only for candidates who clear the objective part. No negative marking. Reasoning and Data Analysis carry three marks a question, 180 of the 300 between them.
Phase III: Interview
60 marks, with a pass mark of 30 for EWS, UR and OBC and 27 for SC, ST and PwBD. About three times the vacancies are called, ranked within their own category on Main marks only. Outstation candidates get second class sleeper rail or bus fare by the shortest route.
Scoring
Every section and the aggregate must be cleared at each stage, with the actual cut-offs decided by LIC. Scores from different sessions are normalised by equi-percentile equating and reported to two decimals. Responses are also analysed for patterns of shared right and wrong answers, and if LIC concludes, "whether conclusively proven or not", that scores are not genuine, the candidature is cancelled and the result withheld permanently.
Biometrics (right thumb or left eye IRIS) and a photograph are captured at the start and end of the Main, at document verification and at joining. A mismatch at any stage stops you going further, so do not change your appearance from the uploaded photo.
Syllabus
LIC publishes no topic syllabus for the Generalist papers; the section names and structure under Exam Pattern are the whole specification. A separate Syllabus for Main Examination covers the Specialist and Assistant Engineer streams, and is "illustrative in nature and not exhaustive".
What each Generalist section is
| Section | Stage | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Reasoning Ability | Both | 3 marks a question at the Main |
| Quantitative Aptitude | Preliminary only | Replaced at the Main by Data Analysis and Interpretation |
| English Language | Preliminary | "With special emphasis on grammar, vocabulary and comprehension". Qualifying |
| General Knowledge, Current Affairs | Main only | 2 marks a question |
| Data Analysis and Interpretation | Main only | Charts, tables and cases; 3 marks a question |
| Insurance and Financial Market Awareness | Main only | The only industry-specific section |
| English Descriptive | Main | Communication skills: emails, reports, situation analysis and precis writing. Qualifying |
The Preliminary has no awareness section at all; the Main has two, worth 120 marks between them.
The Specialist and Legal streams sit a different examination
| AAO (Generalist) | AAO (Specialist) and Assistant Engineer | AAO (Legal) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Preliminary negative marking | None | One fourth of the mark | One fourth of the mark |
| Preliminary sections | Reasoning 35, Quantitative Aptitude 35, English 30 qualifying | Reasoning 35, Quantitative Aptitude 35, English 30 qualifying | Reasoning 35, English 35, General Awareness 30 qualifying |
| Preliminary floors | Printed | Decided by LIC | Decided by LIC |
| Main objective | 300 marks, four sections, 2 hours | 150 marks, three sections, 60 minutes | 150 marks, three sections |
| Main descriptive | 25 marks, qualifying | 150 marks, counted, Professional Knowledge, plus qualifying English | 150 marks, counted, plus qualifying English |
| Main sitting | 2 hours plus 30 minutes | Two hours thirty minutes | Two hours thirty minutes |
The Specialist Main objective is Reasoning 30 questions for 30 marks, General Awareness with special reference to Insurance and Financial Market Awareness 20 for 20, and Professional Knowledge 50 for 100, with minimums of 13, 9 and 45 for SC, ST and PwBD and 15, 10 and 50 for others. The descriptive Professional Knowledge paper is marked out of 50 and converted to 150, with its minimum normalised to 150 too.
Assistant Engineer (Civil)

Ex-servicemen need 5 years of military service, released on completion of assignment (including those due within 6 months). Certificates are produced at interview, and the category cannot be changed after registration.
Disability
Four percent horizontal reservation under section 34 of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, for locomotor disability, visual impairment, hearing impairment, intellectual disability and multiple disabilities.
| Post | LD | VI | HI | ID/MD |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AAO (Generalist) | 4 | 4 | 6 | 6 |
| AAO (Specialist), 410 posts | 5 | 4 | 4 | 4 |
| Assistant Engineer, 81 posts | 2 | No post identified | 1 | 1 |
3 of the Generalist HI posts and 3 of the ID/MD posts are backlog. For the Generalist post, locomotor disability covers one arm, one leg, both arms, both legs, or one arm and one leg where independent mobility is not affected, and includes leprosy cured persons, cerebral palsy, dwarfism, muscular dystrophy and acid attack victims. An invalid certificate found at any stage cancels the candidature or appointment.
Service conditions and the bond
Posts are regular and transferable anywhere in India, with at least five years in mofussil branches outside the home zone after training and no requests for a specific posting. Probation is one year, extendable to two. Before joining you undertake to serve four years, failing which you or your heirs pay liquidated damages of ₹5,00,000, backed by a stamped, notarised Deed of Indemnity at your own cost.
Selection Process
A three tier process, Preliminary, Main and Interview, followed by a Pre-Recruitment Medical Examination. Only those who qualify at one stage are called to the next.
| Stage | Marks | Enters the final merit? |
|---|---|---|
| Preliminary, Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude | 70 | No. Screens to about 20 times the vacancies |
| Preliminary, English | 30 | No. Qualifying |
| Main, four objective sections | 300 | Yes, and decides the interview call at about 3 times the vacancies |
| Main, English descriptive | 25 | No. Qualifying |
| Interview | 60 | Yes |
| Counted total | 360 |
Of 425 marks a Generalist writes across both examinations, 300 reach the merit list, and the interview is a sixth of the final total.
Ties, and no waiting list
Ties go first to the candidate with the higher additional postgraduate qualification, then to the older candidate. LIC is not bound to take everyone on a tied mark, only as many as the vacancies. There is no contingency or waiting list.
After the merit list
Candidates in the final merit list undergo the Pre-Recruitment Medical Examination and are offered appointment only if fit; PwBD candidates appear before a Medical Board to confirm their status.
Unfair means at any stage, including impersonation, misbehaviour or canvassing, can bring criminal prosecution, disqualification and debarment from LIC recruitment, and if detected later the disqualification is applied retrospectively.
Pre-examination training
SC, ST, OBC and PwBD candidates can register with the Manager (P&IR) of a Divisional Office within one week of the last date for applying. It is a separate step from the application, and the training is at the candidate's own cost.
Salary
| Basic pay | ₹88,635 per month |
| Scale | ₹88,635 - 4,385 (14) - 1,50,025 - 4,750 (4) - 1,69,025: fourteen increments of ₹4,385, then four of ₹4,750 |
| Total emoluments at the start | About ₹1,26,000 a month in an A class city, including HRA, City Compensatory Allowance and other admissible allowances |
The notification names the benefits: Defined Contributory Pension; a special allowance for passing the Insurance Institute of India and Actuarial examinations; gratuity; LTC; cash medical benefit; group mediclaim; group personal accident insurance; group insurance; a vehicle loan; meal coupons; and reimbursement for a brief case, a mobile handset and its expenses, newspapers and magazines, tea or coffee, furniture and a maid allowance. LIC adds that these create no vested right beyond any later modification.
Posting is mostly to mofussil branches, and the four year bond and its ₹5,00,000 damages are set out under Eligibility Criteria.

I will present the supporting documents as and when required." Anyone else's writing or another language invalidates the application.

Participating Institutes
| Body | Role |
|---|---|
| Life Insurance Corporation of India | Runs the whole recruitment: notifications, both examinations, interview, results, cut-offs, medical and appointment |
| LIC Divisional Offices | The Manager (P&IR) registers candidates for pre-examination training |
| Medical Board | Conducts the Pre-Recruitment Medical Examination and checks PwBD status |
| Insurance Institute of India | Fellowship (Life) is required for Insurance Specialist; its III examination after joining earns an allowance |
| ICAI, ICSI, IAI and the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries | Qualifications and memberships for the Chartered Accountant, Company Secretary and Actuarial streams |
| Bar Council | Enrolment as an Advocate for AAO (Legal) |
| IRDAI | Regulates the insurers where an Insurance Specialist's five years must be earned |
| AICTE | Recognises the degrees for Assistant Engineer |
The recruitment page carries every document for the cycle: the Generalist and Specialist notifications in English and Hindi, the centre list, scribe forms, Divisional Office list, certificate formats, a corrigendum, FAQs, a clarification on the descriptive paper, the Main syllabus, results for each stream, cut-offs, marks and the joining forms.
Exam Centres
Centres are listed in Annexure I, with separate lists for each stage.
| Preliminary | Every state and union territory, including district towns. Uttar Pradesh runs from Aligarh, Prayagraj, Lucknow and Meerut; Tamil Nadu from eleven towns; Maharashtra from fourteen |
| Main | A shorter list of capitals and large cities. Kerala drops from seven towns to four, Madhya Pradesh from six to three, Maharashtra from fourteen to five, and Odisha to Bhubaneswar alone |
Some have one centre at both stages: Port Blair, Naharlagun, Panaji, Shillong, Aizawl, Gangtok, Agartala, Puducherry, Chandigarh-Mohali and Dehradun.
Bring the call letter with a photograph affixed and an original photo ID in the same name.
Scribes and compensatory time
Visually impaired candidates and those whose writing speed is permanently affected may bring their own scribe at their own cost. The scribe must not be sitting the same examination, must not act for anyone else, must be qualified one step below the candidate, must not be a current or former LIC employee, and must come from a different academic stream. A scribe answering independently ends the session.
Scribe users, and candidates with locomotor disability or cerebral palsy affecting the writing hand by at least 40 per cent, get 20 minutes for every hour, but only if registered in the application, because the extra time is set in the system.
For biometrics, wash off ink, mehandi or colour beforehand, and report an injured right thumb at once so another finger can be used.
Important Dates
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| 01.08.2025 | Age, qualification, memberships and experience all reckoned |

The schedule is tentative. Updates appear only on the recruitment page, and call letters may also go to the registered email.
Admit Card
Call letters are downloaded from the Careers section 7 days before each examination, and may also be emailed. The call letter needs a photograph affixed, and must be accompanied by an original photo ID in the same name.
An Information Handout with detailed instructions comes with the call letter.
At the venue a photograph and IRIS scan are matched against your upload, and the IRIS authority's decision is final. Refusing biometrics can cancel the candidature. Age relaxation and category certificates are checked only at interview.
Result
LIC publishes the Preliminary and Main results separately for each of the nine streams on the recruitment page, followed by cut-offs for AAO Generalist and AAO Specialist, a display of marks, a scorecard notice, and the lists for the medical examination, batch by batch.
The final merit list is Main plus Interview, 360 marks, and a place on it becomes an offer only after the medical. There is no waiting list.
Cut Off
| What it is | Published in advance? | |
|---|---|---|
| Preliminary sectional minimums | Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude 16 or 18, English 9 or 10 | Yes |
| Main sectional minimums | Reasoning and Data Analysis 40 or 45, General Knowledge and Insurance Awareness 27 or 30, descriptive 9 or 10 | Yes |
| Interview minimum | 30, or 27 for SC, ST and PwBD | Yes |
| Actual sectional and aggregate cut-offs | "Shall be decided by LIC" | No, published afterwards |
The lower figure in each pair is for SC, ST and PwBD. The printed figures are floors; the real line is set after the paper and published on the recruitment page as separate cut-offs for Generalist and Specialist.
The Preliminary counts 70 marks, not 100, and the Main 300, not 325, because both English papers are qualifying. A candidate who misses an objective section never has the descriptive read. Each stream has its own cut-off, applied category by category, so a Generalist figure says nothing about Legal or Assistant Engineer.
Preparation Tips
Know which examination you are sitting
The Generalist papers have no negative marking; the Specialist and Legal Preliminary deduct a quarter mark per wrong answer. The Generalist Main is 300 objective marks plus a qualifying 25; the Specialist Main is 150 objective plus 150 descriptive. Prepare for the right one.
Answer everything, and clear every section
With no penalty in the Generalist papers, a blank is a lost chance. But each section must be passed separately, so a strong Reasoning score cannot carry a weak Quantitative Aptitude.
Do not neglect the qualifying English papers
Both must be passed, at 9 or 10 marks, and they are the easiest way to throw away a good score.
Watch the clock
| Paper | Section | Questions | Time | Seconds a question |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Preliminary | Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude | 35 each | 20 minutes each | 34 |
| Preliminary | English Language | 30 | 20 minutes | 40 |
| Main | Reasoning, Data Analysis | 30 each | 40 minutes each | 80 |
| Main | General Knowledge, Insurance Awareness | 30 each | 20 minutes each | 40 |
The two awareness sections are recall at 40 seconds a question.
Build the insurance half early
Insurance and Financial Market Awareness has no Preliminary counterpart, so it is easily left too late. With General Knowledge it is 120 of the 300 counted marks.
Practise the descriptive by typing
Two business writing tasks in 30 minutes after two hours of objective work.
Use the right practice material
LIC publishes no previous papers. Check coaching material against the notification: separate Generalist and Specialist patterns, no penalty for Generalists, 70 counted Preliminary marks, no Quantitative Aptitude at the Main, 300 plus 60 counted, and the 20 and 3 times shortlist ratios. Material giving one pattern for all of LIC AAO is wrong.
Register for training within the week
Pre-examination training registration closes one week after applications, with a Divisional Office, separately from the form.
Sample Papers
No previous year papers are published for LIC AAO. The official specification is the Generalist notification (15 pages), the Specialist notification (21 pages) and the Main syllabus, with an Information Handout issued about a week before each paper. Practice advice is under Preparation Tips.
