LIC ADO Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility, Important Dates
169 topics across 6 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
LIC ADO is the Life Insurance Corporation of India's recruitment of Apprentice Development Officers. It's a field sales job, not a desk job. In LIC's words:
It is primarily a marketing job that involves considerable mobility by way of tours covering the entire area allotted to the selected candidate. They will be required to locate and sponsor suitable persons to be appointed as Life insurance Agents, train them properly and procure insurance business for the Corporation through his or her unit of Agents.
There's no national advertisement. Each of LIC's eight Zonal Offices issues its own Employment Notice, broken down by Divisional Office, and you apply to one zone. The 2022-23 notices came out in January 2023 and totalled 9,394 posts (zone figures under Participating Institutes). That's far more than the 1,800 Assistant and roughly 1,100 officer posts the four public sector general insurers advertised between them in their latest cycles.
Three things set it apart:
- Three candidate categories (open market, LIC agents, LIC employees) sit different papers and compete for separate shares of the posts.
- No negative marking.
- No waiting list.
Apprentices get a stipend of about ₹51,500 a month. A Probationary Development Officer starts at a basic of ₹35,650, about ₹56,000 gross in an A-class city. Notices, handouts and results are on licindia.in/careers; past rounds move to the Archive.

Exam Pattern
Who sits what
| Category | Who it is | Share of the posts | What they sit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Others (Open Market) | Candidates from the open market | Not more than 60% | Preliminary and then Main |
| LIC Agents | An individual appointed or engaged by LIC to solicit or procure insurance business, or appointed as an agent under the Life Insurance Corporation of India (Agents) Regulations, 2017 | Not more than 25% | Main Examination only |
| LIC Employees | A confirmed whole-time salaried employee of LIC belonging to Class III cadre | Not more than 15% | Main Examination only |
Preliminary (open market only), online, 1 hour

| English Language | 30 | 30, qualifying only | English | 20 minutes |
| Total | 100 | 70 | 1 hour |
English has to be passed but doesn't count for ranking, so the paper is effectively out of 70. 20 times the vacancies in each category go through to the Main.
Main, open market: 160 marks, 120 minutes
| Section | Questions | Marks | Medium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reasoning Ability and Numerical Ability | 50 | 50 | English and Hindi |
| General Knowledge, Current Affairs and English Language with special emphasis on grammar and vocabulary | 50 | 50 | English and Hindi |

| Total | 160 | 160 | Composite 120 minutes |
Main, LIC agents and LIC employees: 100 questions, 160 marks, 120 minutes
| Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Reasoning Ability and Numerical Ability | 20 | 20 |
| General Knowledge, Current Affairs and English Language with special emphasis on grammar and vocabulary | 20 | 20 |
| Agents: Elements of Insurance and Marketing of Insurance Employees: Practice and Principle of Insurance, Marketing | 60 | 120 |
| Total | 100 | 160 |
Insurance is 75% of the internal candidates' paper (two marks a question) and 37.5% of the open-market one.
Marking
No negative marking. LIC still advises against random guessing. Scores from different sessions are normalised by the Equi percentile Equating Method and rounded to two decimals. There are sectional and aggregate minimums at every stage, set by LIC and not published. LIC also compares answer patterns between candidates and cancels any it concludes were shared.
Interview
40 marks. Final merit is Main (160) plus interview (40): 80 and 20 per cent of 200. The Preliminary counts for nothing in the final score. LIC can change the structure by notice on its website.
Syllabus
LIC gives no topic list, only section titles. The scope below follows from them.
Preliminary
- Reasoning Ability (35): puzzles and seating arrangement, syllogism, inequality, blood relations, direction sense, coding and decoding, order and ranking, alphanumeric series, data sufficiency.
- Numerical Ability (35): simplification and approximation, number series, quadratic equations, data interpretation, and arithmetic from percentage and ratio through interest, time and work, speed, mixtures and mensuration.
- English Language (30, qualifying): reading comprehension, cloze, error detection, sentence improvement, para jumbles, fill in the blanks, vocabulary.
Main
- Reasoning and Numerical Ability: the two Preliminary sections merged.
- General Knowledge, Current Affairs and English: current affairs, static GK and financial awareness, with English focused on grammar and vocabulary rather than comprehension.
- Insurance and Financial Marketing Awareness (and its agent and employee
equivalents):
- Life insurance principles: insurable interest, utmost good faith, indemnity and its non-application to life, proximate cause, the contract, proposal and policy, underwriting, premium, bonus, surrender and paid-up value, nomination and assignment, revival, lapse and claims.
- Products: term, endowment, whole life, money-back, ULIP, annuity and pension plans, micro-insurance, riders, LIC's own plan families.
- Regulation: the Insurance Act 1938, the IRDAI and its regulations, the LIC Act 1956, the Insurance Ombudsman, policyholder protection and agency regulations.
- Financial sector: banks and NBFCs, mutual funds, NPS and pension products, capital markets, government insurance and social security schemes.
- Marketing: agency, bancassurance, needs-based selling, persistency, and recruiting, training and supervising an agency unit.
There's no computer knowledge section and no descriptive paper.
Eligibility Criteria
Everything is reckoned as on 01.01.2023 for the 2022-23 round.
Qualification
A Bachelor's Degree in any discipline from a recognized University in India established under a statute or approved for the purpose, or the Fellowship of Insurance Institute of India, Mumbai. No equivalent qualification is accepted. The result must have been declared by 01.01.2023 (the date of passing on the mark sheet or provisional certificate counts), with proof from the university at interview.
Age
Open market: 21 to 30, born between 02.01.1993 and 01.01.2002. Instead of relaxations, LIC gives each group its own upper limit:
| Group | Upper age limit |
|---|---|
| All others | 30 |
| Member of OBC other than those in the creamy layer | 33 |
| Member of a Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe | 35 |
| LIC Agent, or other than Agent such as DSA or FSE, not SC, ST or OBC | 40 |
| LIC Agent or DSA or FSE who is OBC, non-creamy layer | 43 |
| LIC Agent or DSA or FSE who is SC or ST | 45 |
| LIC Employee who is not SC, ST or OBC | 42 |
| LIC Employee who is OBC, non-creamy layer | 45 |
| LIC Employee who is SC or ST | 47 |
| Ex-serviceman | 30 increased by the number of years of service in the armed forces, subject to a maximum of 42 if unreserved, 45 if OBC and 47 if SC or ST |
Experience
Open market needs none, but preference would be given to candidates who have at least 2 years experience in life insurance industry or in marketing of financial products.
| Category | For recruitment in an Urban Area | For recruitment in a Rural Area |
|---|---|---|
| LIC Employee | Not less than 3 years of service after confirmation in Class III cadre in LIC of India | |
| LIC Agent, or other than Agent such as DSA or FSE | Not less than 5 years as an agent, DSA or FSE, with a Net First Year Premium Income of not less than ₹5,00,000 during the immediately preceding 5 financial years and a Net First Year Premium Income of not less than ₹1,00,000 on 50 lives in any 3 of those financial years | Not less than 4 years as an agent, DSA or FSE, with a Net First Year Premium Income of not less than ₹1,00,000 on 50 lives per year in any 3 of the immediately preceding 4 financial years |
Net First Year Premium is new business premium (including first year's renewal) minus whatever has since lapsed. A dishonoured cheque doesn't count.
Rural Area means a place with a population of 50,000 or less and an operational area of not more than 1.50 lakh; everything else is urban. You'll work in the area you're recruited for.
Other conditions
- The spouse of an LIC agent can't apply.
- Indian citizens only. Knowing the local language is desirable, not required.
- Caste and EWS certificates must be in LIC's own proformas (SC/ST, OBC, OBC non-creamy-layer declaration, EWS), on the recruitment page.
- Government or PSU employees need a No Objection Certificate at interview, or the candidature may not be considered.
Selection Process
| Stage | Marks | Who sits it | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Preliminary | 70 counted of 100 asked | Open market only | Shortlists 20 times the vacancies in each category. Contributes nothing further |
| Main Examination | 160 | All three categories | 80 per cent of the final score |
| Interview | 40 | Those shortlisted on the Main Examination | 20 per cent |
| Pre-recruitment Medical Examination | Pass or fail | Selected candidates | A condition of appointment |
The interview shortlist comes from Main marks alone. LIC sets minimum marks for each section, the aggregate and the interview, and can raise them to limit how many are called.
Ties
Aggregate of Main and interview first, then a higher educational qualification (a postgraduate ranks above a graduate), then age, older first.
No waiting list
There will be no contingency or waiting list for candidates not declared successful in the main examination. If you're below the line, there's no later route in through declined offers.
Biometrics
LIC captures your right thumb impression and photo at entry and exit of the Main, at document verification before the interview, and when you report for training. Refusing at any of these can cancel your candidature, and the verifier's match decision is final. Wash off ink or mehndi first; if your right thumb is injured, tell the centre so another finger can be used.
Misconduct
Unfair means, misbehaving in the hall, carrying a phone or electronic device, or disclosing paper content can lead to debarment from LIC exams, permanently or for a period, and to termination if you've already joined.
Salary
| Stage | What is paid |
|---|---|
| Apprentice Development Officer | A stipend equal to the minimum of the basic pay and the dearness allowance on the Development Officers' scale, approximately ₹51,500 per month, except for candidates from the LIC Employee Category |
| Probationary Development Officer | Basic pay of ₹35,650 in the scale ₹35650-2200(2)-40050-2595(2)-45240-2645(17)-90205, with total emoluments of approximately ₹56,000 in an A-class city inclusive of House Rent Allowance and City Compensatory Allowance |
The stipend is higher than the probationary basic because it includes DA.
Other benefits: gratuity, the defined contributory pension scheme, LTC, medical benefit, group insurance, group personal accident insurance, a two- or four-wheeler advance, and reimbursement for a briefcase and mobile handset. After confirmation, Development Officers can earn performance linked incentives, which is where much of the earning in this job comes from.
Apprenticeship to confirmation
- Apprenticeship: theoretical and field sales training, for a period LIC decides.
- Probationary Development Officer: not automatic. You must finish the apprenticeship and be judged suitable.
- Probation: one year, extendable to two.
- Confirmation: subject to performance appraisal.
You're posted within your zone, possibly to a nearby Divisional Office rather than the one you applied for.
How to Apply
Apply online only, through the link on LIC ADO 2022-23 recruitment page. The 2022-23 window was 21 January to 10 February 2023.
| Category | Amount, non-refundable |
|---|---|
| SC and ST candidates | ₹100 inclusive of GST, as intimation charges, plus transaction charges |
| Other than SC and ST candidates | ₹750 inclusive of GST, as application fees cum intimation charges, plus transaction charges |
Only SC and ST get the concession. OBC, EWS, PwBD and ex-servicemen pay ₹750.
What you choose
- Zone (each is a separate notice) and Divisional Office.
- Recruitment category: agent, employee or open market. This decides your paper, age limit, experience rule and share of posts, and can't be changed.
- Exam centre, from your zone's list.
Paying
Cards, UPI, net banking, IMPS, cash cards and wallets are accepted. Don't press back or refresh while paying. If no e-receipt appears, the payment failed: log in again with your provisional registration number and repeat it. Print the e-receipt and the form.
A submitted application can't be withdrawn, and the fee isn't refunded, even for applications rejected for your own errors.
Use your own email address. Exam intimations and the interview call letter go there. At interview, bring the signed system-generated form with originals and copies of every certificate.
Participating Institutes
LIC runs the recruitment itself, zone by zone. 2022-23 vacancies:
| Zonal Office | Seat | Vacancies notified |
|---|---|---|
| Western Zone | Mumbai | 1,942 |
| Southern Zone | Chennai | 1,516 |
| South Central Zone | Hyderabad | 1,408 |
| North Zone | Delhi | 1,216 |
| Eastern Zone | Kolkata | 1,049 |
| North Central Zone | Kanpur | 1,033 |
| East Central Zone | Patna | 669 |
| Central Zone | Bhopal | 561 |
| Total | 9,394 |
Each notice splits its posts by division. The North Zone's fourteen were Ajmer, Amritsar, Bikaner, Chandigarh, Delhi, Jaipur, Jalandhar, Jodhpur, Karnal, Ludhiana, Rohtak, Shimla, Srinagar and Udaipur, with 290 posts in Delhi and 49 in Karnal. LIC says all figures are provisional and may change at final selection.
Exam Centres
LIC publishes one list of centres for both the Preliminary and the Main, with a code and parent division for each. You pick from your zone's centres, and you sit both papers at the same one.
| Zone | Centre codes | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| North Zone | 101 to 127 | Ajmer, Amritsar, Chandigarh, Jaipur, New Delhi or NCR, Srinagar, Jammu, Patiala |
| North Central Zone | 201 to 220 | Agra, Prayagraj, Dehradun, Kanpur, Lucknow, Meerut, Varanasi, Haridwar |
| Central Zone | 301 to 311 | Bhopal, Gwalior, Indore, Jabalpur, Raipur, Ujjain |
| East Zone | 401 to 426 | Guwahati, three Kolkata centres (Metro I, Metro II, Suburban), Gangtok, Shillong, Imphal, Aizawl, Agartala, Port Blair |
| South Central Zone | 501 to 537 | Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mysore, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Tirupati, Mangalore |
| South, West and East Central Zones | 601 onwards | In the same annexure |
The Preliminary lasts one hour and the Main two, but allow longer at the venue for checks and biometrics. No entry without the call letter, and no phones. The interview venue comes with the interview call letter by email.
Important Dates
| Date | Event (2022-23 round) |
|---|---|
| 01.01.2023 | Age, qualification and experience reckoned |
| 21 January 2023 | Online registration and fee payment open |
| 10 February 2023 | Last date of registration and payment |
| 4 March 2023 onwards | Call letter download, tentative |
| 12 March 2023 | Preliminary Examination, open market |
| 8 April 2023 | Main Examination, all three categories |
LIC can change the schedule, and did: it published a notice changing the Main date this round. Check licindia.in/careers for the current round; finished rounds, including 2018-19 and 2022-23, sit in the Archive.
The cycle runs roughly four weeks from notice to closing date, four more to the Preliminary, and four weeks from the Preliminary to the Main.
Admit Card
Call letters are downloaded from the LIC website (from 4 March 2023 for the Preliminary in the 2022-23 round), separately for each phase. Each comes with an Information Handout in English and Hindi describing the online test. Interview call letters are emailed.
Biometrics use the right thumb, not the left as in most recruitments. Details are under Selection Process.
Phones and electronic devices aren't allowed in the exam or interview premises.
Result
Results and notices appear on the round's entry under licindia.in/careers. Interview call letters go to your registered email rather than being published.
Final merit is the Main (160) plus interview (40), using equated scores. There's no waiting list.
Selection still leaves the medical, biometric check at training, the apprenticeship, appointment as Probationary Development Officer (not automatic) and confirmation after probation of one year, extendable to two.
Cut Off
LIC publishes no cut-off marks, before or after the exam. It sets sectional and aggregate minimums for the Preliminary, Main and interview at its discretion, and says no correspondence will be entertained.
What is fixed: the Preliminary shortlists 20 times the vacancies in each category, and each recruitment category (open market up to 60%, agents up to 25%, employees up to 15%) competes only within itself. Results and any notices go up on licindia.in/careers under the round's entry.
Preparation Tips
Know which paper you're sitting
Agents and employees: insurance is 120 of your 160 marks. Preparing like a bank aspirant covers only 40. Open market: insurance is 60 of 160 in the Main.
Attempt everything
There's no negative marking, so a blank and a wrong answer score the same. Expect a higher cut-off than on penalised insurance papers, since everyone attempts everything.
Open market: the Preliminary ranks you on 70 marks
Reasoning (35) and Numerical Ability (35), twenty minutes each, decide the shortlist. English only has to be passed.
Start the insurance section before the Preliminary
The Main came four weeks after the Preliminary in 2022-23 (12 March to 8 April), and its 60-mark insurance section isn't in the Preliminary at all. Cover principles, products, regulation (Insurance Act 1938, LIC Act 1956, IRDAI, the 2017 agency regulations, the Ombudsman), and the wider financial sector and distribution. IRDAI and the Insurance Institute of India (whose Licentiate syllabus maps closely onto the section) are the primary sources.
English means grammar and vocabulary
In the Main, LIC names grammar and vocabulary, not comprehension, and merges English with GK and current affairs into one 50-mark section.
Treat the interview as a sales interview
It's 40 marks with a minimum. The job is recruiting, training and running a unit of agents across a territory, so be ready to talk about that, and about the local area and language.
Pick your zone with the numbers in front of you
Vacancies ranged from 1,942 (Western) to 561 (Central) in 2022-23, and you'll be posted within the zone.
Sample Papers
LIC does not release previous year papers, model papers or sample papers for the Apprentice Development Officer recruitment.
What it does put out before each phase is an Information Handout, in English and Hindi, carrying the question format and the on-screen instructions. It appears alongside the call letter on the LIC ADO recruitment page, usually a week or two before the test. Read it before the day; the interface it describes is the one you will sit in front of.
For practice, the closest published papers are IBPS PO and SBI PO preliminary papers, which use the same reasoning, numerical ability and English sections at about the same level. For the Main paper's insurance and financial marketing section there is no equivalent, and the IRDAI IC-38 agents' study material is the usual substitute.
