NFL Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility, Important Dates

157 topics across 5 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.

NFL, National Fertilizers Limited, is a Navratna central PSU under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers and one of India's biggest urea makers. It runs five gas-based ammonia and urea plants: Nangal and Bathinda in Punjab, Panipat in Haryana, and two at Vijaipur in Guna district, Madhya Pradesh.

Graduates join as Management Trainees at grade E-1, scale ₹40,000 to ₹1,40,000, after a one-year training period. Field Representatives, non-executives and experienced hires each have their own advertisements.

  • The exam is offline, on OMR sheets: 150 questions in two hours, no negative marking, two thirds from your own discipline.
  • Posts are few and split by discipline. The 2026 advertisement had 21 posts across six disciplines, 13 of them in Marketing.
  • There's a ₹4,50,000 service bond for three years after training.

NFL recruits when it needs people, not on a yearly calendar. Everything is posted on its recruitment portal, careers.nfl.co.in. As of 8 September 2026 every advertisement there was closed.

Offline OMR test80%

Both are rounded to two decimals, and you must score at least 50% in each separately. A strong written score won't carry a weak interview.

Syllabus

NFL publishes no topic list. The discipline paper is drawn from the curriculum of your qualifying degree, and its official sample question paper shows the level for all six disciplines. These are the areas each one covers.

Part A: discipline, 100 marks

  • Chemical Engineering: reaction engineering, thermodynamics, mass and heat transfer, fluid mechanics, process control and instrumentation, plant utilities and safety, and the ammonia and urea processes NFL runs.
  • Electrical Engineering: machines, power systems, switchgear and protection, control systems, measurement and instrumentation, and process plant drives and distribution.
  • Information Technology: data structures, databases and normalisation, networks and the OSI model, operating systems, software engineering, information security. The sample paper opens with a data structures question and a normalisation question.
  • Materials: either mechanical and materials science, or purchase, inventory, stores and supply chain management, depending on which qualification you hold.
  • Marketing: marketing management, consumer behaviour, distribution and channels, sales, market research and pricing, plus agribusiness and rural marketing.
  • Finance and Accounts: financial and cost accounting, financial management, taxation, auditing, corporate finance and company law, at CA, CMA or MBA Finance level.

Part B: aptitude, 50 marks

  • General English: grammar, vocabulary, comprehension.
  • Quantitative Aptitude: arithmetic, data interpretation, basic algebra.
  • Reasoning: series, analogy, coding, arrangements, logical deduction.
  • General Knowledge and Awareness: current affairs, and the fertiliser sector in particular.

Qualification and the 60% bar

Every discipline needs at least 60% in the qualifying degree, or 50% for SC, ST, PwBD and departmental candidates. Check this first, because it rules out more people than anything else.

DisciplineQualification
MarketingTwo-year full-time MBA, PGDBM or PGDM in Marketing, agribusiness, international business, rural management or foreign trade; or B.Sc Agriculture with an M.Sc in Agriculture
Finance and AccountsA bachelor's degree with CA, ICWA or CMA final; or a two-year full-time MBA, PGDM or PGDBM majoring in Finance
MaterialsFull-time B.E., B.Tech or B.Sc (Engg) in Mechanical or Materials Science and Engineering; or a two-year full-time MBA or PG degree in Materials Management, Logistics or Supply Chain Management
IT, Electrical, ChemicalFull-time engineering degree in the branch from an AICTE or UGC approved institution

A dual-degree MBA in Finance needs a certificate showing the major specialisation. If too few SC, ST or PwBD candidates meet 60%, NFL can drop the bar to 55% for the shortfall, but only after the fact. It isn't a right to apply at 55%.

You'll need to pass a medical and have your character and caste certificate verified. Posting can be at any NFL unit, office or joint venture, so only apply if you're willing to serve anywhere in India.

Selection Process
  1. Offline OMR test, 150 questions in two hours.
  2. Personal interview, with about five candidates called per post.
  3. Document verification, medical and character checks.

The merit list weights the test at 80% and the interview at 20%. Separate lists are drawn for UR, SC, ST, OBC, EWS and PwBD in each discipline, so with one to three posts per discipline you're competing against very few people.

Ties go to the higher percentage in the qualifying degree, then to the older candidate. So your degree marks count twice: for the 60% bar and as the tie-breaker.

  • No travel allowance for the written test. Interview candidates get second AC rail fare (not Rajdhani, Duronto or Shatabdi) or bus fare from the nearest station to their address, against receipts.
  • Turn up to the interview without complete documents and you won't be allowed to sit it, or paid travel.

NFL also keeps a panel for vacancies that come up within one year, including when selected people don't join or leave, so the list can go past the advertised posts.

Salary
StageBasic payScale
During the one-year training₹40,000₹40,000 - 3% - ₹1,40,000
On regularisation as an Officer₹41,200₹40,000 - 3% - ₹1,40,000

Regularisation depends on completing training and meeting the minimum standards. On top of basic: Industrial Dearness Allowance, HRA or company housing, leave, medical, performance related pay, contributory PF, gratuity, a superannuation scheme and group accident insurance, all as per company rules.

You sign a service bond of ₹4,50,000 to stay at least three years after training. Leave earlier and you pay it, so decide on it before you apply.

Posting can be any NFL unit, office or joint venture, during training and after. The plants are at Nangal, Bathinda, Panipat and Vijaipur, and the corporate office is in Noida.

How to Apply

Apply online at careers.nfl.co.in, also reached from Careers on nationalfertilizers.com. Every advertisement is listed there with its number and status.

CategoryFee
General, OBC and EWS₹700, plus bank charges
SC, ST, PwBD, ex-servicemen and departmental candidatesNil

Pay online by card or net banking. Nothing is refunded, and NFL charges nothing else, so anyone asking for more money isn't NFL.

The form goes: registration, post, personal details, education and experience, uploads, payment. You can edit it until you pay or submit, and in 2026 there was also a two-day edit window after the closing date.

  • Use an email and mobile number you'll keep. Admit cards and interview letters come by email and SMS only.
  • Have marksheets showing your percentage, plus any category or EWS certificate in the prescribed format.
  • You pick two exam cities. NFL doesn't have to give you either, and you can't change them after submitting.

Marketing staff also work from field and zonal offices across the country. The same careers portal lists recruitment for RFCL (Ramagundam Fertilizers and Chemicals, a joint venture) and board-level posts through the Public Enterprises Selection Board, both separate processes.

Exam Centres

The 2026 advertisement listed these tentative centres:

NFL calls these tentative. Its other 2026 advertisement, 02 (NFL)/2026, was for Field Representative and NDSC Centre In-charge.

Admit Card

Download it from Careers on nationalfertilizers.com under Recruitment in NFL, then the advertisement. Nothing comes by post. You also get an SMS and email, but NFL takes no responsibility if they don't arrive, so check the site.

In 2026 the notice of 30 June 2026 gave the exam dates, 11 and 12 July, and told candidates to log in for their date and city. The admit card with the centre address came out only three days before, so book travel from the city notice.

An admit card doesn't confirm your candidature. It can be cancelled at any stage, even after joining, if anything you gave turns out false.

Result

Shortlists, results and notices go up on careers.nfl.co.in under the advertisement and on nationalfertilizers.com under Careers. NFL sends nothing else.

You need 50% in the test and 50% in the interview before the 80:20 merit is worked out, and lists are drawn separately by category and discipline.

The offer still depends on a medical certificate from a civil surgeon or NFL's hospital, character and caste verification, and the service bond.

Cut Off

NFL doesn't publish cut-offs. The only published figure is the 50% minimum in each stage. The mark that actually selects is whatever the last person in your discipline and category scored.

The category split matters more than the total. Of the 21 posts in 2026 only seven were unreserved, and four disciplines were entirely backlog reserved posts: Finance and Accounts (one SC, two ST), Materials (one ST), IT (one OBC) and Electrical (two OBC). Check the category table in the Advertisement 01 (NFL)/2026 before you apply.

Preparation Tips
  1. Put most of your time into your discipline. It's 100 of the 150 marks.
  2. Do the official sample paper first to see the level before you plan your revision.
  3. Answer everything. There's no negative marking, so a blank is just a lost mark.
  4. Practise on a real OMR sheet. Shading under time, and the difficulty of changing an answer, are different from a computer test.
  5. Prepare for the interview properly. It's 20% and a separate 50% hurdle, and people who clear the written are knocked out there.
  6. Know the fertiliser sector: the Department of Fertilizers, urea and nutrient-based subsidy schemes, NFL's plants and products, and the ammonia-urea process. It helps with GK and much more with the interview.
Sample Papers

NFL publishes an official sample question paper for Management Trainees on its recruitment portal, attached to the 2026 advertisement. It covers all six disciplines plus the aptitude part, in English and Hindi.

There are no previous year papers or answer keys. NFL keeps documents on each advertisement's page on careers.nfl.co.in, so look there when the next one opens.
