NHM Karnataka CHO Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility
106 topics across 3 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
NHM Karnataka CHO is the contract recruitment of Community Health Officers under the National Health Mission in Karnataka. The recruiting body is the Karnataka State Health and Family Welfare Society, Arogya Soudha, 1st Floor, West Wing, Magadi Road, Bengaluru 560023, which signs every recruitment notice the Mission issues in the state.
A CHO is the Mid-Level Health Provider who runs an Ayushman Arogya Mandir, the health and wellness centre built on a sub centre. The upgrade turned the sub centre from a place that weighed babies and handed out iron tablets into one that diagnoses, treats and refers. The CHO leads one or two ANMs and the ASHAs of the villages the centre covers.
No advertisement yet
The Mission has not published a CHO advertisement. On 12 September 2026 its home page carried two status items:
- The Government has approved starting the online recruitment process for CHOs on contract, and a notification will follow.
- Approval is being sought to conduct a recruitment examination for CHOs on contract in six districts; exams will follow once it's granted.
Neither gives a vacancy count, fee, age limit, eligibility, syllabus or pattern, and no document behind them could be found. Anything below that isn't from those items comes from the Society's other notices or the national CHO framework.
Where the post fits
- Ayushman Arogya Mandir, the renamed Health and Wellness Centre programme, which turns sub centres into centres offering a full service package.
- PM-ABHIM, the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission, which pays for buildings, equipment and the block public health units the centres report into.
- Namma Clinic, the state's urban primary care scheme for city wards with no sub centre.
The state also runs AMPK (Arogya Mattu Poshane Karyakrama) under the Mission and recruits for it by walk-in interview, like most contract posts.

Exam Pattern
No exam pattern has been published. The Mission is still seeking approval to hold an exam at all. Any question count, mark total, time limit or negative marking rule you see elsewhere has been copied from another state's CHO notice, and those vary a lot.
How the Society usually recruits
| Method | What the Society publishes | CHO status |
|---|---|---|
| Walk-in direct interview | A dated notice naming posts, date, time and venue; you turn up with originals | Its normal method for contract posts |
| Online application | A notification with a portal link and closing date, like the state level one of 16 June 2026 | Approved in principle for CHO |
| Recruitment examination | Not used for any Mission post in the notices read | Approval still being sought, for six districts |
Most of its contract notices are headed nera sandarshana, direct interview. That's why both an online process and a written exam needed Government approval first.
Where other states do hold a written CHO paper, it draws on community health nursing, primary care practice, the national health programmes and the centre's service packages, not on banking-style aptitude or general studies.
Syllabus
No syllabus has been published, because there's no advertisement. Until there is, study the job as the national framework defines it.
The twelve service packages an Ayushman Arogya Mandir delivers
The CHO is accountable for all twelve. The first seven were the reproductive and child health core the sub centre already had; the rest came with the upgrade.
| # | Package | What it means at the centre |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Care in pregnancy and childbirth | Antenatal registration, four antenatal checks, anaemia management, danger sign recognition and referral, postnatal visits |
| 2 | Neonatal and infant health care | Newborn weighing, warmth and feeding, home based newborn care follow up, sick infant referral |
| 3 | Childhood and adolescent health | Immunisation, growth monitoring, management of diarrhoea and pneumonia, adolescent anaemia and menstrual health |
| 4 | Family planning and contraceptive services | Counselling, spacing methods, oral pills and condoms, injectable contraception where authorised, referral for permanent methods |
| 5 | Management of communicable diseases | National programme work for tuberculosis, malaria, dengue, leprosy and HIV, including treatment support and contact tracing |
| 6 | Management of common communicable illness and outpatient care | Fever, respiratory infection, skin and eye conditions, wound care, and the standard treatment protocols that fix what the officer may prescribe |
| 7 | Screening and management of non communicable diseases | Population enumeration and screening for hypertension, diabetes, and oral, breast and cervical cancer, then follow up and adherence |
| 8 | Care for common ophthalmic and ENT problems | Vision screening, cataract referral, ear discharge and hearing complaints |
| 9 | Basic oral health care | Oral cavity examination, dental hygiene advice, referral of suspicious lesions |
| 10 | Elderly and palliative health care | Home based care for the bedridden, mobility and fall risk, pain and symptom relief within protocol |
| 11 | Emergency medical services | Trauma first aid, burns, snakebite, poisoning, stabilisation and transfer |
| 12 | Screening and basic mental health care | Common mental disorder screening, counselling, referral, and follow up of those already on treatment |
Beyond clinical work
- Population enumeration, family folders and the state's individual health IDs.
- Leading the ANMs and ASHAs, including their monthly review.
- Drugs and supplies: essential drug list, stock registers, expiry control.
- Reporting into the Health Management Information System and programme portals.
- Community work: wellness activities and the village health, sanitation and nutrition committee.
The closest thing to a set syllabus is the six month Certificate in Community Health bridge course (IGNOU's Certificate Programme in Community Health and equivalents). It teaches the twelve packages against the standard treatment protocols.
Eligibility Criteria
No eligibility conditions have been published for this cycle. Below are the national framework and the standing terms the Society puts on every contract recruitment. The advertisement, when it comes, is what counts.
Kannada is required
Every Society notice carries the same line, including the walk-in notice of 31 July 2026:
Speaking, reading, writing in Kannada language and typing proficiency is a must.
It isn't waived for clinical posts. The CHO works in a village, types into state systems and reports to a block office that works in Kannada. If you can't read and write it, this is the condition that rules you out.
The national qualification routes
| Route | Base qualification | Bridge requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Nursing | B.Sc Nursing or Post Basic B.Sc Nursing from a recognised institution | Certificate Programme in Community Health, the six month bridge course, done before or after selection depending on the state |
| Nursing, diploma route | General Nursing and Midwifery, where the state admits it | The same certificate programme, and states differ on whether the diploma route is open at all |
| Ayurveda | Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery | The certificate programme, where the state opens the post to ayurveda graduates |
Registration with the state nursing council, or the state board of Indian systems of medicine for ayurveda, is normally needed too.
The Society's standing terms
- Posts are temporary and purely on contract basis: no pension, no seniority carried forward, no claim to regularisation.
- The number of posts and the places or districts are subject to variation.
- An employee once terminated under the Mission is not eligible for further employment under the Mission. A contract ended for cause shuts you out of the whole Mission, not just the post.
- Selection is on a merit cum roster basis.
Check these first when the advertisement appears
- Whether GNM diploma holders can apply, or only degree holders.
- Whether the bridge certificate is needed at application or arranged after selection. That decides whether a fresh graduate can apply.
- The upper age limit and relaxations.
- Whether the six district exam and the state online recruitment are one process or two.
Selection Process
| Status item | What it says | Where it stands |
|---|---|---|
| Online recruitment | The Government sent the proposal for CHO recruitment on contract, and a notification will be issued on its directions. The Kannada text records approval to start the online process. | Approved in principle; no notification as at 12 September 2026 |
| Recruitment examination in six districts | Approval is being sought to hold a recruitment exam for the post on contract in six districts; exams will follow once it's granted. | Awaiting approval; districts not named |
Merit cum roster
The Society's notices say the selection will be made on merit cum roster basis. Everyone is ranked on one merit list, then the state reservation roster decides which rank fills which reserved point. A reserved category candidate who reaches the general line takes a general point.
How a Society walk-in works
From the notice of 31 July 2026:
- The notice names the posts, date, reporting time and venue: the office of the Chief Administrative Officer, National Health Mission, Arogya Soudha, Magadi Road, Bengaluru.
- You turn up in person. No application, no shortlisting.
- Bring originals, self attested copies, two copies of your CV and a passport photo.
- Documents are checked and the interview held the same day.
- Selection is merit cum roster.
- No travel or daily allowance is paid.
If the six district exam is approved, a written stage would come before any interview in those districts. The Mission hasn't said what it would contain or whether an interview would follow.
Salary
No pay figure has been published for this cycle. Under the National Health Mission the CHO post is usually paid in two parts:
| Component | What it is | How it behaves |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed monthly remuneration | The consolidated amount named in the contract | Paid monthly, revised only when the Mission revises it, not by pay commission |
| Performance based incentive | An amount tied to the centre's achievement against defined indicators | Variable, assessed periodically, and not guaranteed in any month |
The incentive depends on the centre's work (screening coverage, follow up, immunisation, reporting), not your attendance, and it can be nil.
It's not a government post: no pay scale or increments, no pension, no seniority that survives the contract, no claim to regularisation. A renewed contract is a new contract, and termination bars you from the whole Mission.
You're posted to a named Ayushman Arogya Mandir and you work there. Don't expect a transfer to a town of your choice.
How to Apply
No application is open. The Government has approved starting an online process, but until the notification appears there's no portal, form, fee or closing date. Any site offering a Karnataka CHO application link is offering something the Mission hasn't issued.
Where the notification will appear
- nhm.karnataka.gov.in, the Mission's site, where both CHO status items were posted.
- hfwcom.karnataka.gov.in, Health and Family Welfare Services, which hosts the Mission's notification files.
The Society publishes contract notices at irregular intervals, often a month apart and sometimes four, with no fixed season, so check both sites weekly. arogya.karnataka.gov.in/nhm/ returns not found and nrhm.karnataka.gov.in doesn't resolve, though both are widely repeated.
What a Society online notice looks like
The state level notification of 16 June 2026 (No. NHM/SPMU/HR/Recruitment-State/Notification/50/2026-27) named the posts, said they were temporary and purely on contract basis, gave the portal and a closing date, then extended it to 22 July 2026 by corrigendum. It was for consultants and programme staff, not CHOs.
For a walk-in, bring
- All original documents
- One set of self attested photocopies
- Two copies of your CV
- One passport size photograph
No travel or daily allowance is paid.
Participating Institutes
| Body | Role |
|---|---|
| Karnataka State Health and Family Welfare Society, Arogya Soudha, 1st Floor, West Wing, Magadi Road, Bengaluru 560023 | The recruiting body. It signs the Mission's notifications and it is the employer under the contract. |
| National Health Mission, Karnataka | The programme under which the post is created and funded. Its state programme management unit issues the state level notifications. |
| Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Karnataka | The parent department. Its site hosts the notification files, and its approval is what the second status item is waiting on. |
| Chief Administrative Officer, National Health Mission | Walk-in interviews are held in this office at Arogya Soudha. |
| District Health and Family Welfare Officers | District offices that issue their own contract notices, and would handle the six district exam if approved. |
Where a CHO works
- Ayushman Arogya Mandir at sub centre level: one CHO per centre.
- Namma Clinic in city wards, with the same service package.
- Primary Health Centre: the referral point above, whose medical officer the CHO reports to clinically.
- Block Public Health Unit, funded under PM-ABHIM, the administrative layer above the centre.
Every state recruits CHOs separately. Selection in another state gives you no claim in Karnataka, and Karnataka won't automatically accept another state's bridge certificate.
Exam Centres
No exam centres have been announced. The status item mentions six districts but doesn't name them, or say whether that means an exam held in six districts or for vacancies in six districts. Don't plan travel on either reading.
The one venue the Society names, for its walk-ins, is the Office of the Chief Administrative Officer, National Health Mission, Arogya Soudha, 1st Floor, West Wing, Magadi Road, Bengaluru 560023. The notice of 31 July 2026 set its walk-in there for 20 August 2026 at 11:00 AM. Allow for Bengaluru traffic, carry originals, and expect to pay your own way.
Important Dates
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 16 June 2026 | State level notification for consultants and programme staff (not CHO). |
| 22 July 2026 | Extended closing date for that notification. |
| 31 July 2026 | Walk-in notice No. AMPK/NUT//2026-27 under AMPK and PM-ABHIM, with the Society's standing terms. |
| 20 August 2026 | That walk-in held, 11:00 AM, Arogya Soudha, Bengaluru. |
| 12 September 2026 | Mission site shows the two CHO status items and no CHO advertisement. |
Neither CHO status item is dated. One records approval to start online recruitment; the other says approval for a six district exam is still being sought.
The Society's direct interview notices have no fixed calendar. Those read were dated 20 December 2023, 19 June 2024, 15 July 2024, 9 September 2024, 25 November 2024, 26 December 2024, 7 January 2025, 13 January 2025, 18 January 2025, 11 April 2025, 16 May 2025, 29 May 2025, 23 February 2026, 6 April 2026, 13 April 2026 and 20 August 2026. Notice is short: the August 2026 walk-in was announced twenty days ahead. Watch nhm.karnataka.gov.in weekly.
Admit Card
No admit card has been issued, because no CHO exam has been scheduled.
At a Society walk-in there's no admit card at all; the notice is your authority to attend and you bring your documents. If the online process goes ahead, the call letter would normally be downloaded from the recruitment portal with your registration details shortly before the exam, but Karnataka hasn't named a portal. Watch nhm.karnataka.gov.in.
Result
No CHO result has been declared, because there's been no recruitment.
The Society publishes selection lists for contract posts as notification files on hfwcom.karnataka.gov.in, linked from the Mission's site. There's no login or scorecard for walk-ins. After selection come document checks and a fixed-term contract; renewal isn't automatic.
Cut Off
No CHO cut-off has ever been published in Karnataka, because the recruitment hasn't been held. A walk-in interview produces a ranked selection list and no published marks. If a written exam is approved, the selection list or result notice on the Mission's site is where any cut-off would appear. Other states' CHO cut-offs rest on different papers and rosters and don't carry over.
Preparation Tips
There's no paper to prepare for yet, so prepare for the job. An interview or an exam will test the same ground.
Sort out Kannada first
Speaking, reading and writing Kannada, with typing, is a standing condition. Typing is the part people neglect; it's named separately because CHOs type into state reporting systems every day.
Settle the bridge certificate
The six month Certificate in Community Health (IGNOU's Certificate Programme in Community Health and equivalents) is the qualification bridge. States differ on whether it's needed at application. It takes six months, so find out where you stand now.
Know the twelve service packages
Be able to say what each means at a sub centre, as a scenario, not just name it. A panel will ask what the centre does.
Learn the standard treatment protocols
A CHO prescribes within a protocol and an essential drug list. Know what you may treat, what you must refer, and where the line is. Add the national health programmes as they run in Karnataka.
Have your file ready
Originals, a self attested set, two copies of your CV and a passport photo. The last Society walk-in gave twenty days' notice.
Practise for an interview
The Mission's usual method is a same-day interview after document checks, with no shortlisting. Your first assessment may be a conversation about clinical judgement, programmes and the local language.
CHO papers from other states circulate online. They were set against different qualifications and mark schemes, so treat them as general practice only.
Sample Papers
No sample papers or previous papers exist for this recruitment. The Mission hasn't held a CHO exam and is still seeking approval to hold one.
If an exam is approved, any syllabus or model paper will come with the advertisement on nhm.karnataka.gov.in, with the files hosted on hfwcom.karnataka.gov.in.

Frequently Asked Questions
Has the Karnataka CHO recruitment been announced?
No. As at 12 September 2026 there was no advertisement, only two status items: online recruitment approved, and approval sought for an exam in six districts.
Where do the vacancy counts and dates on other sites come from?
Other states' notices, or nowhere. The Mission hasn't published any.
Will it be a written exam or an interview?
Not confirmed. The Society's normal method is the walk-in interview: sixteen such notices between December 2023 and August 2026. A written exam needs separate Government approval.
Is Kannada really required for a clinical post?
Yes: speaking, reading, writing and typing. It's on every notice.
What qualification do I need?
Nationally, B.Sc Nursing or Post Basic B.Sc Nursing, or in some states GNM or BAMS, plus the six month Certificate in Community Health. Karnataka hasn't said which routes it will open.
Is this a government job?
No. The posts are temporary and purely on contract basis.
What if my contract is terminated?
You can't be employed anywhere under the Mission again.
What is merit cum roster?
One merit list, with the reservation roster applied to it. A reserved candidate who reaches the general line takes a general point.
Do I get travel expenses?
No. No travel or daily allowance is paid.
Which six districts?
Not named yet. Wait for the advertisement.
How much notice will there be?
Probably weeks. The August 2026 walk-in was announced on 31 July 2026.
