Selection Process
| Stage | Marks | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Preliminary | 100 | Shortlists about 15 times the vacancies. Doesn't count after that |
| Main, objective | 250 | 80% of the final score |
| Main, descriptive | 30 | Qualifying only |
| Interview | Weighted 20% | Minimum qualifying marks set by the Company |
To reach the interview you need a minimum in each objective section, a pass in the descriptive (which has its own cut-off), and a minimum total in the objective test.
Interviews are at selected centres named in the call letter. No change of date or centre is allowed, though the Company can change them. Scores of candidates who fail a minimum may not be disclosed.
Final merit
Main objective and interview combined 80:20, ranked in descending order. Ties go to the higher interview mark, then the older candidate.
- Those within the vacancies are considered for appointment, subject to medical fitness, possibly in more than one batch, with seniority by merit.
- A waiting list of up to 50% of vacancies may be used if offers are declined.
- Taking part gives no automatic right to selection, and ineligibility found at any stage cancels candidature.
Documents at the interview
Originals plus self-attested copies, or you're out: interview call letter, printed application, date of birth proof, photo ID, Std X, XII and degree mark sheets with proof the result was out by 01.05.2025, caste certificate, disability certificate and scribe details if used, Ex-Servicemen discharge book and pension order, a No Objection Certificate if you work for a government or public sector employer, experience certificates, and the eligibility certificate for non-citizens.
Salary
Starting basic pay is ₹50,925 in the scale ₹50925-2500(14)-85925-2710(4)-96765: ₹2,500 increments for 14 years to ₹85,925, then ₹2,710 for 4 years to ₹96,765. Total emoluments are about ₹90,000 a month in metropolitan centres.
Benefits include NPS pension under PFRDA, gratuity, LTS, medical benefits, group personal accident insurance, and Company or leased housing. Doctors (MBBS) get Non-Practicing Allowance of 25% of basic, about ₹12,700 a month at the start.
Probation
One year, extendable twice by six months. You must pass the non-life Licentiate Examination of the Insurance Institute of India to be confirmed, or face termination. The Company can also end your service during probation without notice or reason.
The bond
You undertake to serve four years including probation, backed by a stamped bond from two sureties (not blood relatives) for one year's gross salary.
| If you | You pay |
|---|---|
| Resign before four years | One year's gross salary from the probation year, reducible in proportion to service |
| Resign or are terminated during probation | All gross salary received, plus ₹25,000 towards training |
No lien with a current employer binds the Company, and it pays no leave salary or pension contribution for one.
Posting can be anywhere in India, with a minimum of 5 years at the first posting. Specialists may have to stay in their specialisation for 10 years, though promotion eligibility continues.
How to Apply
Online only. The 266-post window was 12 June to 3 July 2025.
| Category | Fee, including GST |
|---|---|
| SC, ST and PwBD | ₹250 (intimation charges only) |

Uploads

- Signature in black ink, not in capitals.
- Left thumb impression in black or blue ink, not smudged. Without a left thumb, use the right thumb, then a left finger from the forefinger, then a right finger, then the left toe, and say which you used.
- A handwritten declaration in English, in your own hand, not in capitals: "I, ___________ (Name of the candidate), hereby declare that all the information submitted by me in the application form is correct, true and valid. I will present the supporting documents as and when required." Anyone else's writing or another language makes the application invalid.
Keep a personal email and mobile active until the process ends; all communication goes there.
Discipline, category, centre, scribe and compensatory time, and the pre-exam training option are all fixed at submission. SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy) and PwBD candidates can opt for free, non-residential pre-exam training, at their own travel cost.
Participating Institutes
National Insurance Company Limited runs this recruitment itself; the advertisement is signed by the Chief Manager, Personnel Department, Head Office, Kolkata. Admit Card
Separate call letters for Phase I, Phase II and the interview, downloaded from the Recruitment section. Bring four things, all compulsory: the call letter, an original photo ID, a photocopy of it, and an E-Aadhaar Card.
Accepted ID: PAN, passport, driving licence, voter card, bank passbook with photo, gazetted officer's or people's representative's ID letter, college ID, Aadhaar, employee ID or Bar Council ID. Ration cards and learner's licences aren't accepted. The name must match the call letter exactly; women who changed their name after marriage should check. Late arrivals aren't let in.
Your thumb impression and photo are captured at the Main and verified later. Wash off ink or mehndi and keep fingers dry.
Compensatory time is 20 minutes per hour, only if you registered for it. Scribes are arranged by you, must come from a different stream for Specialist disciplines, and can't be a NICL employee or a candidate.
Result
Results come in three steps on the Recruitment section: the Phase I shortlist by roll number, the Main result with separate interview shortlists per discipline, and the pre-employment medical list, followed by contingency lists as offers are declined. The 266-post cycle had three contingency lists through 2026.
The final list is ranked on the 80:20 combined score.
Cut Off
The advertisement leaves qualifying marks to the Company, but NICL then publishes actual figures.

In short: an unreserved Generalist needs around 70 out of 100 at Phase I and the mid-sixties at the final stage. Specialist pools are small and can cut off far lower. The figures move with each cycle's vacancies.
Preparation Tips
- Know the target. An unreserved Generalist needed 70.75 out of 100 at Phase I in the 266-post cycle, and 65.76 on the 80:20 final score in the 274-post cycle. Both are after negative marking.
- Prepare General Awareness and Computer Knowledge from the start. They're 100 of a Generalist's 250 Main marks (80 of a Specialist's) and don't appear in the Preliminary. For insurance awareness, the IRDAI annual report and General Insurance Council premium data are finite and repeat.
- Practise each Preliminary section as a sealed 20-minute block, since each must be cleared on its own.
- Type the descriptive. It comes straight after three hours of objective questions, on a keyboard.
- Score every mock with the one-fourth penalty.
- Specialists: the 50-mark discipline paper is where your degree pays off directly.
- Take the interview seriously. It's 20% and the first tie-break.
- Check your certificates before applying: OBC valid on the registration date, EWS issued after 31.03.2025, and a degree aggregate that clears 60% without rounding.
Sample Papers
No sample papers or previous year papers are available for NICL AO as of now. The Company doesn't release them.
It does publish an Information Handout for each phase on its Recruitment section before the exam, and the Phase I cut-off notice for scoring practice. The next advertisement usually appears there; the last one opened in June.
