Railway TTE Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility
173 topics across 6 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
The Railway Recruitment Boards don't recruit Travelling Ticket Examiners directly. Neither of the 2025 Non-Technical Popular Categories (NTPC) notices has the post. What they have are the two commercial ticketing grades you actually join at:
| Post | Notice | Level | Initial pay | Qualification | Age as on 1 Jan 2026 | Vacancies |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Commercial cum Ticket Clerk | CEN 07/2025, Under Graduate | 3 | ₹21,700 | 12th (+2 stage) with not less than 50 per cent in the aggregate | 18 to 30 | 2,424 |
| Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor | CEN 06/2025, Graduate | 6 | ₹35,400 | Degree from a recognised University or equivalent | 18 to 33 | 161 |
That's 2,585 vacancies in the ticketing line in one year. So if you want a ticket-checking job, you're preparing for the NTPC CBTs and applying for Commercial cum Ticket Clerk with a 12th pass, or Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor with a degree. There's no separate TTE paper, notice or syllabus.
Neither ticketing post has a skill test, so the 2nd Stage CBT decides your rank on its own. Both are medical standard B-2, which allows glasses and candidates who've had Lasik.

Exam Pattern
| Stage | Questions | Duration | General Awareness | Mathematics | General Intelligence and Reasoning | Counts towards merit? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st Stage CBT | 100 | 90 minutes | 40 | 30 | 30 | No, screening only |
| 2nd Stage CBT | 120 | 90 minutes | 50 | 35 | 35 | Yes, the whole merit |
- One mark a question; one third of a mark off for each wrong answer. Three wrong cancel one right.
- That's 54 seconds a question in the first paper and 45 in the second.
- 120 minutes for candidates eligible for a scribe.
- Section splits are indicative and may vary a little.
- Marks are normalised when a CBT runs in several sessions.
The 1st Stage only shortlists: 15 times the community-wise vacancies of the posts notified against your RRB go through, and the Railways can raise or lower that. For posts without a typing or aptitude test, which includes both ticketing posts, the CEN says normalised 2nd Stage marks are used to shortlist for Document Verification.
| Stage | Commercial cum Ticket Clerk | Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor |
|---|---|---|
| 1st Stage CBT | Screening only | Screening only |
| 2nd Stage CBT | Decides the merit | Decides the merit |
| Skill test | None | None |
| Document Verification | 1:1 | 1:1 |
| Medical | B-2 | B-2 |
If you're shortlisted for the 2nd Stage under an OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS, PwBD or ex-servicemen reservation, you stay in that category for every later stage.
Syllabus
The same topic list applies to both CBTs and both notices. What changes is the standard: the CEN says questions follow the educational level of the post, so 12th standard for the undergraduate notice and degree level for the graduate one.
| Subject | Topics |
|---|---|
| Mathematics | Number System, Decimals, Fractions, LCM, HCF, Ratio and Proportions, Percentage, Mensuration, Time and Work, Time and Distance, Simple and Compound Interest, Profit and Loss, Elementary Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry, Elementary Statistics |
| General Intelligence and Reasoning | Analogies, completion of number and alphabetical series, Coding and Decoding, Mathematical Operations, Similarities and Differences, Relationships, Analytical Reasoning, Syllogism, Jumbling, Venn Diagrams, Puzzle, Data Sufficiency, Statement and Conclusion, Statement and Courses of Action, Decision Making, Maps, Interpretation of Graphs |
| General Awareness | Current events of national and international importance, Games and Sports, Art and Culture of India, Indian Literature, Monuments and Places of India, General Science and Life Science up to 10th CBSE, History of India and the Freedom Struggle, Physical, Social and Economic Geography of India and the World, Indian Polity and Governance, General Scientific and Technological Developments including the Space and Nuclear Programme of India, the UN and other world organisations, environmental issues, Basics of Computers and Computer Applications, Common Abbreviations, Transport Systems in India, Indian Economy, Famous Personalities of India and the World, Flagship Government Programmes, Flora and Fauna of India, important Government and Public Sector Organisations of India |
There's no railway-specific paper, no ticketing rules and no commercial manual. Ticket clerks sit the same general paper as every other NTPC candidate and learn the job after joining.
Eligibility Criteria
Commercial cum Ticket Clerk (CEN 07/2025)
12th (+2 stage) or equivalent with at least 50 per cent in the aggregate. The 50 per cent isn't required for SC, ST, persons with benchmark disabilities, ex-servicemen, or anyone with a qualification above 12th, so a graduate applying here doesn't need it. Age 18 to 30 on 1 January 2026.
Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor (CEN 06/2025)
A degree from a recognised University or equivalent. Age 18 to 33 on 1 January 2026.
| Community | Ticket Clerk: born not earlier than | Ticket Supervisor: born not earlier than | Not born after |
|---|---|---|---|
| UR and EWS | 2 January 1996 | 2 January 1993 | 1 January 2008 |
| OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | 2 January 1993 | 2 January 1990 | |
| SC and ST | 2 January 1991 | 2 January 1988 |
You must hold the qualification by the closing date (4 December 2025 for CEN 07/2025, 27 November 2025 for CEN 06/2025). If you're still awaiting results, you can't apply.
Age relaxation
| Category | Community | Relaxation or maximum age |
|---|---|---|
| SC and ST | 5 years | |
| OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | 3 years | |
| Ex-servicemen with at least six months continuous service after attestation | UR and EWS | 3 years, after deducting service from age |
| OBC (NCL) | 6 years, after the same deduction | |
| SC and ST | 8 years, after the same deduction | |
| Persons with Benchmark Disabilities | UR and EWS | 10 years |
| OBC (NCL) | 13 years | |
| SC and ST | 15 years | |
| Serving Group C and erstwhile Group D railway staff, and substitutes, with at least 3 years service | UR and EWS | up to 40 |
| OBC (NCL) | up to 43 | |
| SC and ST | up to 45 | |
| Staff of quasi-administrative railway offices (canteens, co-operative societies, institutes) | length of service or 5 years, whichever is less | |
| Women widowed, divorced or judicially separated and not remarried | UR and EWS | up to 35 |
| OBC (NCL) | up to 38 | |
| SC and ST | up to 40 |
You get the largest single relaxation, not the sum. SC, ST and OBC-NCL candidates applying against UR vacancies get none, and PwBD candidates against UR vacancies get only the PwBD (UR) relaxation. Your date of birth must match your 10th certificate exactly.
Medical standards
| Standard | Distant vision | Near vision and other tests |
|---|---|---|
| A-2 | 6/9, 6/9 without glasses (no fogging test) | Sn 0.6, 0.6 without glasses; colour, binocular, night and myopic vision tests |
| A-3 | 6/9, 6/9 with or without glasses (lenses up to 2D) | Sn 0.6, 0.6 with or without glasses; colour, binocular, night and myopic vision tests |
| B-2 | 6/9, 6/12 with or without glasses (lenses up to 4D) | Sn 0.6, 0.6 with or without glasses for close work; field of vision (binocular) test |
| C-2 | 6/12, nil, with or without glasses | Sn 0.6 combined, with or without glasses, for close work |
Both ticketing posts are B-2. Lasik or other refractive surgery rules you out of A-2 and A-3 posts (Station Master, Goods Train Manager, Traffic Assistant, Trains Clerk) but not B-2 or C-2, under Railway Board letter 2022/H/5/1/NER/Dalbir of 25 August 2022. Fail the medical and there's no alternative post; you get one paid Medical Appeal, and its result is final. PwBD and ex-servicemen standards are at Paras 511(7) and 534 of the Indian Railway Medical Manual, Volume I (Chapter 5).
Disability
Both ticketing posts are identified for hearing impairment (D, HH), locomotor disability (OA, OL, MW, LC, DW, AAV, and SD or SI without neurological or limb dysfunction) and multiple disabilities, but not visual impairment. A scribe-eligible candidate gets 120 minutes instead of 90, or 20 minutes per hour extra without a scribe.
Provisional until DV
RRBs don't check eligibility in advance. Claims are tested at Document Verification and false or suppressed information means rejection at any stage, even later. Category claims, fee concessions and the PwBD certificate are judged on the closing date. If your certificate postdates it, bring marks sheets showing the result date, or a board or university certificate of that date. A name change needs a Gazette notification or other legal document.
Selection Process
- 1st Stage CBT: 100 questions, 90 minutes, screening only.
- 2nd Stage CBT: 120 questions, 90 minutes, for 15 times the community-wise vacancies. Its normalised marks are the whole merit.
- Document Verification for as many candidates as vacancies (1:1).
- Medical examination at B-2, then empanelment and zone allotment.
Shortlisting for DV and empanelment is strictly on merit, above the minimum qualifying marks. On a tie, the older candidate ranks higher; if ages match, the name in A to Z order. At DV you must bring originals, with no extra time, and government or PSU employees need an NOC from their employer that day or lose their candidature.
Posting
The RRB allots a zone or production unit on your options, merit, medical standard and vacancies. Once empanelled for one preference you lose the next, and the Board can post you somewhere you didn't choose. The CEN adds that you stay on the Railway you join, with no right to a transfer, and no transfer request is registered until you've served at least 5 to 10 years. Pick your RRB with that in mind.
Appointees are liable to serve in the Railway Engineers' Unit of the Territorial Army and may have to sign a security or indemnity bond. RRBs only recommend names; the Railway Administration issues the appointment. If there's a shortfall, the Boards can go further down the merit list, though that gives no vested right. Results can be corrected for errors at any stage, even after appointment, which can mean removal from service.
The RRBs have appointed no agents or coaching centres, and anyone trying to influence them is disqualified. Use only the official Board websites (rrb.indianrailways.gov.in); the helpline is rrb.help@csc.gov.in, working days 10:00 to 17:00.
Salary
₹21,700 is the first cell of Level-3 and ₹35,400 of Level-6. Neither is take-home: Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance by city class, Transport Allowance and commercial staff allowances are added, and National Pension System and health scheme contributions come off.
The graduate post starts 63 per cent higher, but there are fifteen Ticket Clerk vacancies for every Ticket Supervisor one (2,424 against 161). A graduate eligible for both is choosing between a better grade and a much better chance.

How to Apply
Submit one online application through the RRB websites, to one RRB, ranking zones, units and posts within it. Partial options are honoured as given; a post left blank counts as unwillingness; options are final. More than one application, to any RRB, gets them all rejected and can debar you from future RRB and RRC exams.
- The account is created on rrbapply.gov.in. If you made one for any RRB notice in 2024 or 2025, log in with it rather than making another.
- Twelve Create an Account details can't be edited later, including name, date of birth, matriculation details, email, mobile, Aadhaar e-KYC and the chosen RRB.
- Later changes are only possible in the modification window, at ₹250 a time, non-refundable.
- Verify with DigiLocker or Aadhaar. Using another photo ID brings much stricter scrutiny at every stage.
- The Boards' FAQs advise using a desktop, as parts of the form don't work well on a phone. Keep your registration number.
Fee
| Category | Fee | Refund on sitting the 1st Stage CBT |
|---|---|---|
| All candidates other than those below | ₹500 | ₹400, less bank charges |
| SC, ST, ex-servicemen, PwBD, female, transgender, Minorities and Economically Backward Class | ₹250 | All of it, less bank charges |
Pay online only. An application without the fee is rejected. Minorities means Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains and Zoroastrians (Parsis), and you'll need an affidavit on non-judicial stamp paper at DV. EBC means family income below ₹50,000 a year, shown by an income certificate, BPL card, Railways Izzat MST or a Central Government poverty scheme certificate held when you apply. It isn't OBC or EWS.
Scribes
A scribe must do a One Time Registration on rrbapply.gov.in, help only one candidate, be one step below the candidate's qualification, and not be a candidate in the same CEN.
Participating Institutes
The employer is Indian Railways, through its zones and production units; the recruiter is the Railway Recruitment Boards under the Ministry of Railways. The CEN lists the twenty-one Board websites at Para 16.0.
| Notice | Skill test | Posts |
|---|---|---|
| CEN 07/2025 | Computer Based Typing Skill Test | Accounts Clerk cum Typist, Junior Clerk cum Typist |
| CEN 07/2025 | None | Commercial cum Ticket Clerk, Trains Clerk |
| CEN 06/2025 | Computer Based Typing Skill Test | Senior Clerk cum Typist, Junior Accounts Assistant cum Typist |
| CEN 06/2025 | Computer Based Aptitude Test | Station Master, Traffic Assistant |
| CEN 06/2025 | None | Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor, Goods Train Manager |
Document verification and the medical apply to every post in both notices.
Exam Centres
The RRBs fix every date, time and venue, and won't postpone or move them. Cities and centres are allotted on technical and logistical grounds, so you may have to travel to another state. SC and ST candidates can ask for a free Sleeper Class pass, which comes with the e-call letter; carry your original community certificate when travelling. Misuse means rejection and debarment.
Only the e-call letter goes inside. No phones, Bluetooth devices, watches, calculators, health bands, pens, paper, bags, caps, wallets, water bottles or food. A phone found on you, even switched off, means cancellation, debarment and possible legal action. A pen is provided. Don't wear henna, as it blocks biometric capture, and don't count on a cloak room.

| Closing date | 20 November 2025 | 27 November 2025 |

The corrigenda (Corrigendum-1 to CEN 06/2025, 19 November 2025; Corrigendum-1 to CEN 07/2025, 27 November 2025) moved each deadline by a week but kept age at 1 January 2026. CBT, DV and medical dates are announced later on the RRB websites, city intimation first and the e-call letter after.
Admit Card
Nothing is posted. Download the city and date intimation, the e-call letter and any travel authority from your RRB's site via rrb.indianrailways.gov.in, and follow the e-call letter's instructions exactly. Updates come by SMS and email to the details you registered, which can't be changed.
At DV bring all originals: your 12th or degree certificate and marks sheets, your 10th certificate for date of birth, community and category certificates (with the minority affidavit or EBC proof if you claimed a fee concession), an employer NOC if you're in government or a PSU, and a Gazette notification if your name has changed.
Result
CBT results and empanelment lists go up on each RRB's website, reached from rrb.indianrailways.gov.in, with SMS and email alerts. Dates for each stage are announced the same way. Cut-offs are published per Board, post and category with the results.
Empanelment depends on DV and the medical, and the appointment letter comes from the Railway Administration, not the RRB. Promotion within the commercial and ticket-checking cadre follows the Railway Administration's own rules; the CEN says nothing about it.
Cut Off
No cut-off has ever been published for a TTE post, because the RRBs have never advertised one. For the ticketing posts, cut-offs for CEN 06/2025 and 07/2025 will appear on each RRB's website with the results, by post and category, as normalised scores.
The minimum qualifying marks, in both CBTs, are:
| Community | Minimum percentage of marks |
|---|---|
| UR | 40 per cent |
| EWS | 40 per cent |
| OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | 30 per cent |
| SC | 30 per cent |
| ST | 25 per cent |
Ex-servicemen follow their community's figure, and PwBD candidates can get a 2-mark relaxation if there aren't enough of them for reserved posts. The real bar is the shortlist ratio: 15 times the vacancies to the 2nd Stage, then 1:1 to DV.
Preparation Tips
Prepare for the right exam
There's no TTE paper. With 12th you're aiming at Commercial cum Ticket Clerk; with a degree, Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor as well. Good RRB NTPC material at your level is the right preparation, and anything sold as a "TTE syllabus" or "TTE paper" isn't from an RRB notice.
Put your effort into the 2nd Stage
The first paper only screens. Your rank comes entirely from the 120-question second paper, so practise at 45 seconds a question with the one-third penalty applied, and don't guess blind.
Don't neglect General Awareness
It's the biggest section in both papers (40, then 50) and its list includes things general studies books often skip: Indian literature, monuments, transport systems, computer basics, abbreviations, flagship schemes and public sector organisations. Maths and reasoning together are 60 marks in the first paper and 70 in the second. The maths stops at elementary algebra, geometry, trigonometry and statistics, so it's the most reliable scoring.
Set preferences with care
| If you opt for | You're committing to |
|---|---|
| Commercial cum Ticket Clerk or Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor | Two CBTs, DV and a B-2 medical. No skill test |
| The four typist posts | A typing test at 30 wpm English or 25 wpm Hindi, without editing tools or spell check |
| Station Master or Traffic Assistant | An aptitude test with a T-Score of 42 in every battery, and an A-2 medical |
If your eyesight rules out the A-2 or A-3 posts, the B-2 ticketing posts may still be open. And choose your RRB as if you'll stay there for a decade, because transfers aren't registered for at least 5 to 10 years.
Sample Papers
No previous year papers or answer keys are published for these notices. The RRBs keep no past-paper archive.
Before each CBT, your RRB posts a Mock Test Link on its website (via rrb.indianrailways.gov.in) that runs on the real exam interface. The CENs (CEN 07/2025, CEN 06/2025) and the Boards' FAQs are the only other official material.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a Railway TTE exam?
No. The RRBs don't advertise a Travelling Ticket Examiner post.
Then how do I get into ticket checking?
Through the NTPC notices: Commercial cum Ticket Clerk with 12th, or Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor with a degree.
Does the 1st Stage count towards my rank?
No. It only shortlists for the 2nd Stage.
Is there a typing or aptitude test for these posts?
No. The 2nd Stage CBT is the whole merit.
I wear glasses, or I've had Lasik. Can I apply?
Yes, for the ticketing posts. B-2 allows glasses up to 4D and Lasik.
Can I apply to more than one RRB?
No. All your applications would be rejected and you could be debarred.
Will I be posted near home?
Not necessarily. You're allotted on options, merit and vacancies, and transfers aren't registered for at least 5 to 10 years.
Will I become a TTE after joining?
Promotion is up to the Railway Administration's own rules, which the CEN doesn't cover. The entry point is one of the two ticketing posts.
