RBI Assistant Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility

148 topics across 7 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.

RBI Assistant is the Reserve Bank of India's clerical-cadre recruitment. The Bank hires in small numbers, office by office, and pays well above the public sector banks, so the competition is stiff.

  1. Preliminary, 100 marks in 60 minutes. Qualifying.
  2. Main, 200 marks in 135 minutes. This alone decides the merit list.
  3. Language Proficiency Test in the official or local language of the state. Qualifying, and mandatory with no exemption of any kind.

There's no interview.

The language is part of eligibility, not just a last hurdle. If you apply to an office, you must be able to read, write, speak and understand that state's language. Fail the test and you're disqualified, however well you scored.

Each office fills its own posts, so cut-offs differ from office to office in the same cycle. Starting basic pay is ₹20,700, with an initial gross without HRA of about ₹47,849 on the 2023 figures.

As at 8 September 2026 no Assistant recruitment is open. The last was Assistant-2023, advertised on 13 September 2023 for 450 posts. The details below come from that Assistant-2023 advertisement.

Numerical Ability353520 minutes
Reasoning Ability353520 minutes
Total10010060 minutes

Each section closes on its own 20-minute clock, and spare time doesn't carry over. The Preliminary is qualifying, and about ten times the vacancies go through to the Main.

Main: 200 marks, 135 minutes

TestQuestionsMarksTime
Test of Reasoning404030 minutes
Test of English Language404030 minutes
Test of Numerical Ability404030 minutes
Test of General Awareness404025 minutes
Test of Computer Knowledge404020 minutes
Total200200135 minutes

Computer Knowledge gets 20 minutes for the same 40 marks that Reasoning gets 30 for.

Rules for both papers

  • Negative marking: a quarter mark per wrong answer.
  • You must qualify in each section separately, not just in aggregate.
  • Every test except English is available in English and Hindi.
  • Where a paper runs in more than one session, scores are normalised by the equipercentile method, following IBPS practice.

The Language Proficiency Test is held at the Bank's regional offices. It's qualifying and mandatory, with no exemption for anyone.

Syllabus

RBI doesn't publish a topic list. The advertisement names the tests, and an Information Handout comes with the call letter. The usual ground for each test:

Preliminary

  • English Language: reading comprehension, cloze passages, para jumbles, error spotting, sentence improvement, fill in the blanks and vocabulary.
  • Numerical Ability: simplification and approximation, number series, quadratic equations, data interpretation, percentage, ratio, average, profit and loss, time and work, time and distance, simple and compound interest.
  • Reasoning Ability: puzzles and seating arrangements, syllogism, inequality, coding and decoding, blood relations, direction sense, order and ranking, alphanumeric series.

Main

The same three subjects at a higher level, plus two more.

  • General Awareness: current affairs leaning towards banking and financial awareness: RBI's functions and policy, policy rates, banking terms, regulators, government schemes, the Union Budget, awards, appointments and sports. Some static GK.
  • Computer Knowledge: computer fundamentals and generations, hardware and software, input and output devices, operating systems, MS Office, internet and email, networking, databases, security and common abbreviations.

Language Proficiency Test

No syllabus. It checks whether you can read, write, speak and understand the state's language. The languages are listed state by state in an annexure to the advertisement.

Eligibility Criteria

Education

A bachelor's degree in any discipline with at least 50% in aggregate (pass class for SC, ST and PwBD), and knowledge of word processing on a PC. Ex-servicemen (not dependants) can instead have a degree, or the Armed Forces matriculation with at least 15 years of defence service.

Language

You must be proficient in the language of the state (or one of the states) your recruiting office covers: able to read, write, speak and understand it. Candidates from other states can apply on the same terms, but the language is what stops most of them.

Age: 20 to 28

On the date the advertisement fixes. In 2023 that was 1 September 2023, so you had to be born between 2 September 1995 and 1 September 2003.

CategoryRelaxationUpper limit
SC and ST5 years33
OBC3 years31
PwBD, General and EWS10 years38
PwBD, OBC13 years41
PwBD, SC and ST15 years43

Relaxations don't add up. Ex-servicemen get their own relaxations in age, qualification and the qualifying standards.

Selection Process
  1. Preliminary, 100 marks, qualifying. About ten times the vacancies go through, in order of aggregate marks, category by category.
  2. Main, 200 marks. The merit list comes from this alone. About twice the vacancies are called to the language test.
  3. Language Proficiency Test, at the Bank's regional offices. Qualifying.

In both papers you have to clear every section before your aggregate counts.

Final selection is in order of merit in the online exam, provided you pass the language test, are found medically fit under the Bank's rules and your certificates check out.

You start in the recruitment zone you applied to, but can be transferred between the East, West, North and South zone offices.

How to Apply

Online only, on opportunities.rbi.org.in.

CategoryCharge
General, OBC and EWSApplication fee including intimation charges, ₹450 plus 18% GST
SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemenIntimation charges only, ₹50 plus 18% GST
RBI staff candidates who satisfy the Bank's separate criterianil

Bank charges are yours. An application without the fee is rejected, and nothing is refunded or carried over.

You apply to one recruiting office, and pick exam centres in the same state or states for both papers.

Have ready: a working e-mail and mobile number (call letters are downloaded, never posted), a degree marksheet showing the aggregate, and category certificates in the Government of India formats.

You travel to both exams at your own cost. Eligible candidates can take the Bank's free pre-exam training; details are in an annexure to the advertisement.

Participating Institutes

Everyone selected joins the Reserve Bank of India. What you choose is the office.

ZoneIncludes
EastKolkata with Gangtok, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati with Shillong, Patna, Ranchi and the north eastern offices
NorthNew Delhi, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Lucknow, Kanpur, Dehradun, Jammu and Shimla
WestMumbai, Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Bhopal, Raipur and Panaji
SouthChennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Thiruvananthapuram with Kochi, Bhubaneswar-side offices and Puducherry

The office list changes as the Bank reorganises, so check the current advertisement.

Don't confuse this with RBI's Grade B Officer exam or its Office Attendant recruitment. Both are separate, with their own schemes.

Exam Centres

Both papers are online. You choose a centre in the same state or states as your recruiting office, separately for the Preliminary and the Main.

  • You may be given a centre other than the one you picked.
  • Requests to change centre aren't entertained.
  • There are fewer Main centres than Preliminary ones, so you may have to travel further.

The Language Proficiency Test is held at the Bank's regional offices, not at an exam centre. Arrive after the reporting time and you won't be let in.

Important Dates

No Assistant recruitment is open as at 8 September 2026. The Bank's vacancies page lists only medical consultants, contract site engineers and young professionals. There's no fixed month; RBI recruits Assistants when it has posts to fill.

The 2023 cycle

EventDate
Advertisement, Assistant-202313 September 2023
Eligibility reckoning date1 September 2023
Preliminary examination, tentative21 and 23 October 2023
Result document publishedMarch 2024

That's about five weeks from notice to Preliminary and six months to the result, for 450 posts. The eligibility date fell twelve days before the notice. RBI can raise, cut or not fill the vacancies.

Watch opportunities.rbi.org.in. RBI says vacancies are advertised only on its own website.

Admit Card

Call letters are downloaded from the RBI website, with an Information Handout giving exam details. You're told to download by e-mail and SMS; nothing is posted. There's a separate letter for the Preliminary, the Main and the Language Proficiency Test.

Carry the call letter with an original photo ID. Certificates are checked at the language test stage. Keep your e-mail and phone live: the cycle runs for most of a year.

Result

RBI posts on opportunities.rbi.org.in:

  1. Roll numbers of those who cleared the Preliminary (about ten times the vacancies).
  2. Roll numbers of those who cleared the Main (about twice the vacancies).
  3. The final result, after the language test, medical and certificate checks.

Results are office-wise and based on normalised scores. In 2023 the result document came out in March 2024, about six months after the advertisement.

Cut Off

RBI doesn't publish cut-offs in advance. It sets them after each stage, by category and by office.

StageShortlisted
Preliminary to Mainapproximately 10 times the vacancies
Main to Language Proficiency Testapproximately 2 times the vacancies

With 450 posts in 2023, that's roughly 4,500 called to the Main and 900 to the language test. A cut-off quoted without the office named means nothing: a small office with a handful of posts behaves nothing like Mumbai. Cut-offs are in normalised marks, so they can't be compared with a raw score from a remembered paper.

Preparation Tips
  1. Pick the office first. It sets the language, the cut-off and where you'll work.
  2. Be honest about the language. If you can't read, write, speak and understand it, apply somewhere else.
  3. Don't over-prepare the Preliminary. None of its marks reach the merit list.
  4. Clear every section. A great Reasoning score won't rescue a weak Numerical Ability one.
  5. Practise the Preliminary as three 20-minute papers, since each section closes on its own clock.
  6. Drill Computer Knowledge. 40 marks in 20 minutes means answering from memory.
  7. Make General Awareness banking-first. RBI's own website, press releases and monetary policy statements are the best source.
  8. Mind the quarter-mark penalty. Four wrong answers cancel a right one.
  9. Check your degree aggregate. 50% is on the aggregate, not the final year.
  10. Practise with mock tests built to the exact mark and time tables. Memory-based papers online are useful for pace, but don't trust their answers.
  11. Take the Bank's free pre-exam training if you're eligible.
Sample Papers

No previous year papers or answer keys for RBI Assistant are available on the Bank's site as of now. Papers sold as "RBI Assistant previous year" are reconstructed from memory.

The Assistant-2023 advertisement has the exact mark and time tables to practise against. A new notice, when there is one, appears on opportunities.rbi.org.in.
