RRB Junior Stenographer Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility
173 topics across 6 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
The Railway Recruitment Boards are not advertising a stenographer post. Their current notice for the specialist grades, Centralised Employment Notice No. 08/2025, Recruitment for the various posts of Isolated Categories, carries eight posts and no ministerial post of any kind.
| Cat. No. | Post | Pay Level | Vacancies |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Chief Law Assistant | 7 | 22 |
| 2 | Public Prosecutor | 7 | 7 |
| 3 | Junior Translator (Hindi) | 6 | 202 |
| 4 | Senior Publicity Inspector | 6 | 15 |
| 5 | Staff and Welfare Inspector | 6 | 24 |

Stenographer selections do run inside the railways, departmentally
The zonal Railway Recruitment Cells select stenographers against an internal quota. RRC Northern Railway has published notices for a Computer Based Test for Stenographer, Level-4, against the 25 per cent General Selection, and runs departmental promotional examinations for Stenographer Grade III. Those are not open recruitments: like the General Departmental Competitive Examination, they are restricted to serving railway employees.
| If you are | Your route to a railway stenographer post |
|---|---|
| Outside railway service | An RRB Ministerial or Isolated Categories notice carrying the post. None is open. Watch rrb.indianrailways.gov.in under Notification |
| A serving railway employee | A departmental selection by your zonal Railway Recruitment Cell against the 25 per cent quota, or a departmental promotional examination |
If the Boards do advertise the post, it would sit in a notice built like CEN 08/2025: a single stage CBT of 100 questions in 90 minutes, Professional Ability 50 marks and 50 general, one third of a mark off per wrong answer. Whether a stenography or typing test would be added, and in what form, is not stated anywhere.

RRB Junior Stenographer Details
Exam Pattern
No stenographer notice exists, so no stenographer pattern has been published. The tables here are the machinery the Boards use for this family of posts, from CEN 08/2025. Section marks and syllabus for a stenographer post would come from that post's own notice.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Format | Single stage Computer Based Test |
| Questions | 100, objective multiple choice, 1 mark each |
| Duration | 90 minutes, and 120 minutes for candidates eligible for a scribe |
| Negative marking | One third of a mark for each wrong answer |
| Standard | Generally in conformity with the educational standard prescribed for the post |
| Subject | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Professional Ability | 50 | 50 |
| General Awareness | 15 | 15 |
| General Intelligence and Reasoning | 15 | 15 |
| Mathematics | 10 | 10 |
| General Science | 10 | 10 |
| Total | 100 | 100 |
That split applies to every post except Junior Translator (Hindi), and the CEN calls it indicative, with some variation possible in the actual paper. Professional Ability is half the paper, drawn from the post's own syllabus annexure.
| Community | Minimum percentage of marks |
|---|---|
| UR | 40 per cent |
| EWS | 40 per cent |
| OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | 30 per cent |
| SC | 30 per cent |
| ST | 25 per cent |
Relaxable by 2 marks for PwBD candidates where there is a shortage against vacancies reserved for them. Normalisation is applied to CBTs held in multiple shifts.
The RRB reserves the right to conduct additional CBTs, for all candidates or a limited number, and where a second stage is held it may treat the first as a qualifying test. A mock test on the actual examination interface is published before each paper.
CEN 08/2025 adds a post-specific qualifying stage for exactly one post: a translation test for Junior Translator (Hindi), for a shortlist of 10 times the vacancies, qualifying at 60 per cent, whose marks do not count towards merit. So the Boards do add a skill test where the work needs one. Every other post is selected on the CBT alone.
A zonal Railway Recruitment Cell's departmental selection uses its own machinery: RRC Northern Railway ran its Stenographer Grade III promotional examination as a Tablet Based Test, not a CBT at a commercial centre.
Syllabus
There is no published stenographer syllabus at the Boards. CEN 08/2025 carries a Professional Ability syllabus per post at Annexures VII to XIV, one for each of its eight posts, and none of them is for a stenographer.
The general half of the paper is common to every post in the family, and it is stable across notices. Thirty of the hundred marks, preparable now without a live notification:
| Subject | Scope as the CEN states it |
|---|---|
| Mathematics | Number Systems, BODMAS, Decimals, Fractions, LCM and HCF, Ratio and Proportions, Percentage, Mensuration, Time and Work, Time and Distance, Simple and Compound Interest, Profit and Loss, Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry, Elementary Statistics, Square Root, Age Calculations, Calendar and Clock, Pipes and Cistern |
| General Intelligence and Reasoning | Analogies, Alphabetical and Number Series, Coding and Decoding, Mathematical Operations, Relationships, Syllogism, Jumbling, Venn Diagram, Data Interpretation and Sufficiency, Conclusions and Decision Making, Similarities and Differences, Analytical Reasoning, Classification, Directions, Statement Arguments and Assumptions |
| General Awareness | Current Affairs, Indian Geography, Culture and History of India including the freedom movement, Indian Polity and Constitution, Indian Economy, environmental issues concerning India and the World, Sports, and general scientific and technological developments |
| General Science | Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences, up to the 10th standard CBSE syllabus |
How the Boards write the professional half
The annexures in the current notice run from four headings to twenty, and most give a question count or range per topic, which is unusual and useful. Staff and Welfare Inspector has seven headings, three of them at 9 to 11 questions each; Senior Publicity Inspector has five, with communications and mass communication at 12 to 15 each; Chief Law Assistant has twenty, from the Code of Civil Procedure at 5 to 7 questions down to several at 1 to 2. Junior Translator (Hindi) is a different paper entirely, 30 Hindi and 20 English questions across twenty named topics with a fixed count each.
A stenographer annexure, if one were published, would be expected to do the same. Until it is, material sold as an "RRB Junior Stenographer syllabus" is not drawn from any current RRB notice.
Eligibility Criteria
There is no stenographer notice, so there is no stenographer eligibility. The rules below are how the Boards set eligibility for this family of posts, from CEN 08/2025.
Qualification
Each post carries its own, and most demand a professional credential on top of a degree: three or five years standing at the Bar for the law posts, a translation diploma or two years of Government translation work for Junior Translator, a labour, welfare or personnel qualification for Staff and Welfare Inspector, and one to two years administering psychological tests for the two scientific posts. Only Lab Assistant Grade III opens on a school qualification.
Two rules apply to all of them: the qualification must be held from a recognised Board, University, institute or authority as on the closing date, and anyone awaiting a final result that will be declared after the closing date should not apply.
Age
CEN 08/2025 reckons age as on 1 January 2026, with bands running from 18 to 30 for Lab Assistant Grade III to 18 to 40 for Chief Law Assistant, and 18 to 33 and 18 to 35 in between.
| Category | Community | Relaxation or maximum upper age |
|---|---|---|
| SC and ST | 5 years | |
| OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | 3 years | |
| Ex-servicemen with more than 6 months service after attestation | UR and EWS | 3 years, after deducting the length of service from the age |
| OBC (NCL) | 6 years, after the same deduction | |
| SC and ST | 8 years, after the same deduction | |
| Persons with Benchmark Disabilities | UR and EWS | 10 years |
| OBC (NCL) | 13 years | |
| SC and ST | 15 years | |
| Serving Group C and erstwhile Group D railway staff with at least 3 years service, and substitutes with at least 3 years service | UR and EWS | up to 40 years of age |
| OBC (NCL) | up to 43 years of age | |
| SC and ST | up to 45 years of age | |
| Staff of railway quasi-administrative offices such as canteens, co-operative societies and institutes | the length of service rendered, or 5 years, whichever is less | |
| Women who are widowed, divorced or judicially separated and not remarried | UR and EWS | up to 35 years of age |
| OBC (NCL) | up to 38 years of age | |
| SC and ST | up to 40 years of age |
Three rules govern how these combine. No age relaxation is allowed to SC, ST or OBC-NCL candidates applying against unreserved vacancies. A PwBD candidate applying against a UR vacancy gets only the UR PwBD relaxation. And a candidate eligible on more than one ground gets the highest of the relaxations, not their sum.
The date of birth in the application must match the Matriculation, SSLC or equivalent certificate. No later request for a change is considered, and any difference leads to disqualification.
The departmental route is stricter
A zonal Cell's stenographer selection against the 25 per cent quota is open only to regular serving railway employees. The qualification must generally be endorsed in the employee's Service Sheet, the application is countersigned by the supervisor and controlling officer, and the upper age limits are far higher than in an open notice. The detail differs zone by zone and is published by the Cell concerned.
In an RRB recruitment the candidature stays provisional at every stage, and a candidate found not to meet a condition is rejected whenever the fact comes to light, including after Document Verification and after empanelment.
Selection Process
In the Boards' current notice for this family of posts:
- Single stage Computer Based Test, 100 questions in 90 minutes, subject to the minimum qualifying percentage for the community.
- A post-specific qualifying test, where the post has one. In CEN 08/2025 that is the translation test for Junior Translator (Hindi) and nothing else.
- Document Verification, for candidates equal to the number of vacancies, on merit and options.
- Medical examination at the standard fixed for the post, then empanelment and zone allotment.
The RRB reserves the right to conduct additional CBTs, and where a second stage is held it may treat the first as a qualifying test for shortlisting.
Document Verification, and how ties break
Where two or more candidates have the same marks, the older is placed higher; if the age is also the same, by alphabetical order of the given name, not the surname.
A community or category claim must be substantiated at DV with a valid certificate from the competent authority, and failure to do so cancels the candidature. A fraudulent claim of SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS, PwBD or ex-servicemen status leads to disqualification and debarment from examinations and recruitments conducted by the RRBs and RRCs.
All candidates successful at DV are sent for medical examination. Appointment is subject to medical fitness, final verification of educational and community certificates, and verification of antecedents and character. The RRBs only recommend the empanelled names; the appointment is offered by the respective Railway Administration.
The Boards print a standing warning with every notice: beware of touts who try to misguide candidates with fake promises of appointment on illegal consideration. RRB selections are based on the Computer Based Test. Use only the official websites.
Salary
The Boards publish no pay figure for a stenographer post, because they are not advertising one. For the posts in the current notice:
| Post | Pay Level | Initial pay | Medical |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chief Law Assistant | 7 | ₹44,900 | C1 |
| Public Prosecutor | 7 | ₹44,900 | C1 |
| Scientific Supervisor (Ergonomics and Training) | 7 | ₹44,900 | B1 |
| Junior Translator (Hindi) | 6 | ₹35,400 | C2 |
| Senior Publicity Inspector | 6 | ₹35,400 | C1 |
| Staff and Welfare Inspector | 6 | ₹35,400 | C1 |
| Scientific Assistant (Training) | 6 | ₹35,400 | B1 |
| Lab Assistant Grade III (Chemist and Metallurgist) | 2 | ₹19,900 | B1 |
Three pay levels, from Level 2 at ₹19,900 to Level 7 at ₹44,900, tracking the entry qualification closely.
On the departmental side, RRC Northern Railway has run a selection for Stenographer at Level 4 against the 25 per cent General Selection, and Level 4 of the 7th CPC matrix begins at ₹25,500. Grades and levels differ between selections and zones, so read your own zone's notice.
Initial pay is the first cell of the level, not take-home. Dearness Allowance at the rate in force, House Rent Allowance by city class, Transport Allowance and the railway allowances are added; the National Pension System contribution and health scheme subscriptions come off.
How to Apply
No RRB application for a stenographer post is open. When the Boards do issue a notice in this family, the rules below are the ones that cost candidatures.
One RRB, one application
A candidate may apply to only one RRB, through a single common online application listing the notified posts in order of preference, on the common application portal rrbapply.gov.in. The choice of RRB is final and cannot be changed even in the modification window, and applying to more than one RRB rejects all the applications.
Account details, including the mobile number and email ID, cannot be modified once the account is created, and all communication goes by SMS and email. A candidate who created an account for a CEN notified in 2024 or 2025 must use the same credentials. Authenticate your identity with DigiLocker or Aadhaar while creating the account.
The fee, and what comes back
| Category | Fee | Refund |
|---|---|---|
| All candidates other than those below | ₹500 | ₹400 refunded, less bank charges, on appearing in the first stage CBT |
| PwBD, female, transgender, ex-servicemen, and candidates of SC, ST, Minority communities and the Economically Backward Class | ₹250 | The whole ₹250 refunded, less bank charges, on the same condition |
Only candidates who attend the CBT get a refund. Payment is online only, with service charges on the candidate, and an application without the fee is summarily rejected with no representation entertained. Fee paid on an incomplete, unsubmitted or rejected application is not refunded, and the responsibility for correct bank details lies on the candidate.
Two definitions the CEN insists on. Minorities means Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains and Zoroastrians, and a minority candidate taking the waiver must furnish a declaration affidavit on non-judicial stamp paper at DV. Economically Backward Class means annual family income below ₹50,000, evidenced by an income certificate, a BPL card or an Izzat MST issued by the Railways, and it buys the fee concession only, not reservation. EBC, EWS and OBC are three distinct categories.
Participating Institutes
| Railway Recruitment Boards (RRB) | Railway Recruitment Cell (RRC) of a zone | |
|---|---|---|
| Recruits | From the open market | Serving railway employees, against internal quotas |
| Notice | A Centralised Employment Notice, common to twenty-one Boards | A notice of that zone alone |
| Where stenographer would appear | In a Ministerial or Isolated Categories notice | As a selection against the 25 per cent quota, or a departmental promotional examination |
| Position now | No stenographer post in the current notice | Selections do run: RRC Northern Railway has published notices for Stenographer, Level-4, against 25 per cent General Selection |
An isolated category is a post the railways need in small numbers, whose qualification is professional rather than general, and which therefore cannot be folded into the large cadre notices. That is the family a stenographer post would belong to. The eight currently in it are the railways' legal arm (Chief Law Assistant, Public Prosecutor), Hindi translation (202 of the 312 vacancies), publicity, labour and welfare administration, materials testing, and occupational psychology.
The Boards warn candidates to use only their official websites and to be cautious of fake websites and job racketeers.
Exam Centres
Every RRB stage is a computer based test at a centre the Board allots. The date, time and venue for the CBT, any skill test, Document Verification and the medical are fixed by the RRBs and intimated in due course, and a request for postponement, or for a change of venue, date or shift, is not entertained under any circumstances.
- The link for viewing the examination city and date, and for downloading the travel authority for SC and ST candidates, goes live 10 days before the examination.
- E-call letters can be downloaded from 4 days before the date shown in that intimation.
- A static mock test link on the actual examination interface is published on the RRB websites.
Aadhaar biometric authentication at the centre
Aadhaar linked biometric authentication is done at the centre before entry into the examination hall. Bring your original Aadhaar card or a printout of an e-verified Aadhaar, authenticate your identity at the application portal beforehand if you have not, and make sure your Aadhaar is unlocked in the UIDAI system. The record should carry the correct name, date of birth as per the Class 10 certificate, latest photograph, address and father's name.
A departmental examination is not always a CBT at a commercial centre: RRC Northern Railway ran its Stenographer Grade III promotional examination as a Tablet Based Test.
Important Dates
There are no stenographer dates to give. The cycle below is the Boards' current Isolated Categories notice, which is the shape a stenographer notice would follow.
| Date | Step |
|---|---|
| 20 December 2025 | Indicative notice in Employment News |
| 29 December 2025 | Detailed CEN 08/2025 published, English and Hindi |
| 30 December 2025 | Frequently Asked Questions |
| 30 December 2025, 00:00 hrs | Online application opens |
| 29 January 2026, 23:59 hrs | Applications close |
| 31 January 2026 | Last date for fee payment on a submitted application |
| 1 to 10 February 2026 | Modification window, with a modification fee |
| 11 to 15 February 2026 | Window for eligible scribe candidates to give scribe details |
| 29 June 2026 | Notice on the tentative CBT schedule |
| 4 July 2026 | Static mock test link |
| 10 July 2026 | E-call letter download link |
| 14 and 15 July 2026 | Computer Based Test, all eight posts |
Two reference dates follow: age as on 1 January 2026, and the educational qualification as on the closing date. Details entered in the Create an Account form, and the chosen RRB, cannot be changed in the modification window.
A new notice is announced on the twenty-one RRB websites under Notification, in that same order. The departmental cycle runs on its own calendar: RRC Northern Railway held its Stenographer promotional examination on 28 and 29 March 2026.
Admit Card
There is no stenographer admit card to download, because no notice is open. In an RRB cycle the e-call letter is published on the Board's own website at rrb.indianrailways.gov.in, and it becomes available 4 days before the date shown in the city and date intimation, which itself goes live 10 days before the examination.
Carry the e-call letter and an original Aadhaar card or a printout of an e-verified Aadhaar, since Aadhaar linked biometric authentication is done before entry into the hall. A candidate eligible for a scribe gets 120 minutes instead of 90 and supplies scribe details in a window of its own.
Two things cannot be corrected later: the mobile number and email ID, frozen once the account is created, and the date of birth, which must match the Matriculation certificate.
For a departmental selection, the zonal Railway Recruitment Cell publishes its own eligible candidate list and e-admit card link, and afterwards the response sheets and answer key.
Result
No stenographer result exists at the Boards, because no stenographer notice has been issued.
In an RRB cycle in this family, results appear on the RRB websites at rrb.indianrailways.gov.in under Exam Results, and by SMS and email to the registered mobile number and email ID, neither of which can be changed once the account is created. The order is the CBT result, then any post-specific qualifying test, then Document Verification at parity with vacancies, then the medical, empanelment and zone allotment.
The Boards only recommend the empanelled names; the appointment is offered by the Railway Administration concerned.
On the departmental side a Railway Recruitment Cell publishes the response sheets and the answer key used for evaluation before the result. RRC Northern Railway did so for its Stenographer promotional examination of 28 and 29 March 2026, at rrcnr.org.
Cut Off
There is no published cut-off for an RRB stenographer post, because the Boards have no live notice carrying it. Any figure circulating as an "RRB Junior Stenographer cut-off" belongs to an older cycle whose notification the Boards no longer list, and it cannot be checked against anything current.
What is fixed is the floor: UR and EWS 40 per cent, OBC-NCL 30, SC 30 and ST 25, relaxable by 2 marks for PwBD candidates where there is a shortage against reserved vacancies. Above that floor the Boards call candidates equal to the number of vacancies straight to Document Verification, with no larger shortlist and no standby list, so the effective cut-off is the score of the last candidate inside the vacancy count for that post, category and Board. Against vacancy counts running from 1 to 202, divided again across twenty-one Boards, that is a demanding standard for the small posts. Marks from a multi-shift CBT are normalised first, so a published cut-off is a normalised score.
Cut-offs appear on the RRB websites at rrb.indianrailways.gov.in with the result, a few months after the paper. For a serving employee, departmental stenographer cut-offs are published by the Railway Recruitment Cell of the zone concerned and differ zone by zone.
Preparation Tips
Prepare the thirty general marks, because they do not change
Every Isolated Categories notice the Boards issue carries the same four general subjects: General Awareness 15, General Intelligence and Reasoning 15, Mathematics 10 and General Science 10. General science is capped at 10th standard CBSE, so it is finite. That is thirty marks you can work on with no live notification, and the Syllabus section lists the topics.
Build the trade itself
Whatever a stenographer notice eventually prescribes, the work is shorthand and transcription, and the railways' departmental selections test it. Speed and accuracy in shorthand and typing are what you can build in advance and what no general-studies preparation touches.
Learn the marking rule
100 questions in 90 minutes is 54 seconds a question, and one third of a mark comes off each wrong answer, so three wrong answers cancel one right one. A practice set that deducts 0.25 instead of one third, or does not put Professional Ability at 50 of 100, is built for a different paper.
Do not buy a syllabus that does not exist
The Boards publish a Professional Ability syllabus per post, and none of them is for a stenographer. Material sold as an "RRB Junior Stenographer syllabus" is not drawn from any current notice. If one is issued, its own annexure is the authority, and it will probably give a question count per topic as the current annexures do.
Watch the right place
Outside railway service, watch rrb.indianrailways.gov.in under Notification. Inside it, follow your own zonal Railway Recruitment Cell, which runs stenographer selections against the 25 per cent quota and departmental promotional examinations.
Practical things that cost candidatures in any RRB cycle
- You may apply to only one RRB; the choice is final, and applying to more than one rejects all your applications.
- The mobile number and email ID cannot be changed once the account is created.
- Your date of birth must match the Matriculation certificate.
- Keep your Aadhaar unlocked in the UIDAI system for the biometric check at the centre.
- Give correct bank details, since part of the fee comes back on appearing.
Sample Papers
No previous year papers or sample papers are available for an RRB stenographer post as of now. The Boards publish none for any post in this family, and no stenographer notice is open.
When a notice is issued, a mock test on the actual examination interface goes up on rrb.indianrailways.gov.in about ten days before the paper.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there an RRB Junior Stenographer exam right now?
No. The Boards' current notice for the specialist grades, CEN No. 08/2025 (Isolated Categories), carries eight posts and 312 vacancies, and none of them is a stenographer or any other ministerial post.
Then how does anyone become a railway stenographer?
Two routes. From outside railway service, through an RRB Ministerial or Isolated Categories notice when one carrying the post is issued. From inside, through a departmental selection run by a zonal Railway Recruitment Cell against the 25 per cent quota, or a departmental promotional examination.
Do those departmental selections actually happen?
Yes. RRC Northern Railway has published notices for a Computer Based Test for Stenographer, Level-4, against the 25 per cent General Selection, and ran a Stenographer Grade III departmental promotional examination on 28 and 29 March 2026 as a Tablet Based Test, publishing the answer key afterwards. They are open only to regular serving railway employees.
What would the pattern be if the Boards advertised the post?
On the current notice's machinery: a single stage CBT of 100 questions in 90 minutes, 120 with a scribe, split Professional Ability 50, General Awareness 15, General Intelligence and Reasoning 15, Mathematics 10 and General Science 10, with one third of a mark deducted per wrong answer.
Would there be a shorthand or typing test?
The current notice says nothing about one, because it carries no stenographer post. It does show that the Boards add a post-specific qualifying test where the work needs one: Junior Translator (Hindi) has a translation test qualifying at 60 per cent, and no other post has anything.
What are the minimum qualifying marks?
UR 40 per cent, EWS 40, OBC-NCL 30, SC 30 and ST 25, relaxable by 2 marks for PwBD candidates where there is a shortage against reserved vacancies.
Can I apply to more than one RRB?
No. A candidate may apply to only one, the choice is final and cannot be changed even in the modification window, and applying to more than one rejects all the applications.
What is the fee in such a notice?
₹500 for most candidates, of which ₹400 is refunded less bank charges on appearing in the CBT. For PwBD, female, transgender, ex-servicemen and SC, ST, Minority and Economically Backward Class candidates it is ₹250, refunded in full on the same condition.
Is there a published syllabus or cut-off for the post?
Neither. The Boards publish a Professional Ability syllabus per post at Annexures VII to XIV of the current notice, and none is for a stenographer. With no live notice there is no cut-off either, so any figure circulating for it cannot be checked.
Where should I watch, and what can I prepare meanwhile?
The twenty-one RRB websites under Notification; the Boards state that information is intimated only through them. Meanwhile prepare the thirty general marks every such notice carries, and the trade itself, shorthand and typing speed and accuracy, which no general-studies material covers.
