RRB Ministerial and Isolated Categories Syllabus

153 topics across 6 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.

The Railway Recruitment Boards fill the railways' specialist posts through a periodic notice for Isolated Categories. The current one is CEN 08/2025, published on 29 December 2025: eight posts, 312 vacancies, one paper.

Cat. No.PostPay LevelInitial payMedical Age as on 1 Jan 2026Vacancies

7Lab Assistant Grade III (Chemist and Metallurgist)2 ₹19,900B118 to 3039
8Scientific Supervisor (Ergonomics and Training)7 ₹44,900B118 to 351
Grand total, all RRBs312

These are posts the railways need in small numbers and can't recruit through the big cadre notices: lawyers, translators, a publicity officer, welfare inspectors, materials testing assistants, occupational psychologists. That's why Scientific Supervisor has one vacancy and Junior Translator has 202.

Despite the old name, there is no ministerial post in this notice. No stenographer, clerk or teacher. A railway ministerial vacancy would come in a separate notice.

Everyone except Junior Translator sits the same 100-question Computer Based Test, and half of it (50 marks) is Professional Ability, drawn from the post's own syllabus. Applications closed on 29 January 2026 and the CBT is tentatively on 14 and 15 July 2026 for all eight posts.

Para 13.11 gives it 30 Hindi, 20 English and 50 general questions (General Knowledge, General Intelligence, Simple Arithmetic, basics of computer). Your date of birth must match your Matriculation or SSLC certificate exactly; any difference disqualifies you.

Medical standard and disability

C1 for the two law posts, Senior Publicity Inspector and Staff and Welfare Inspector; C2 for Junior Translator; B1 for the two scientific posts and Lab Assistant Grade III. Check you meet it before you apply.

PwBD suitability differs by post (Annexure-A). Junior Translator is open to the widest range, including visual, hearing, locomotor, ASD(M), SLD, MI and multiple disabilities. The law posts take visual and locomotor; Lab Assistant takes hearing and locomotor. Senior Publicity Inspector, Staff and Welfare Inspector and both scientific posts are identified for locomotor disability only. Scribe users get 120 minutes and must enter scribe details between 11 and 15 February 2026; the forms are at Annexures V(A) to V(G).

Reservation

Vertical reservation for EWS, SC, ST and OBC-NCL; horizontal for ex-servicemen and PwBD, counted inside the total. Backlog PwBD vacancies shown separately are from past years. Every category claim is judged as on 29 January 2026, with originals at DV in the Annexure I to III formats.

Selection Process
  1. Computer Based Test, a single stage, 100 questions in 90 minutes.
  2. Translation Test, Junior Translator (Hindi) only: 10 times the vacancies are called on CBT merit, 60 per cent to qualify, no effect on merit.
  3. Document Verification, for candidates equal to the number of vacancies, by merit and options.
  4. Medical Examination at the post's standard. Everyone who clears DV goes.

No physical test, interview or skill test.

Ties (Para 13.12)

The older candidate ranks higher. If the age is the same, it goes by alphabetical order (A to Z) of the given name, not the surname.

At Document Verification

Bring the qualifying certificate plus whatever professional addition your post needs (Bar standing, translation diploma or experience, the publicity or labour diploma, testing experience), your Matriculation certificate, and original category certificates. Minority candidates who took the fee concession need the Minority Community Declaration affidavit on non-judicial stamp paper; EBC candidates need the income certificate, BPL card or Izzat MST. If you can't back a category claim, your candidature is cancelled, and a false claim gets you debarred from RRB and RRC recruitment.

After DV

The RRBs only recommend names. The Railway Administration makes the appointment, subject to the medical, certificate checks and antecedent verification. Vacancies can rise, fall or go to nil, and if they're cancelled the fee is not refunded. Unfilled PwBD vacancies are carried forward as backlog.

Selection is on the CBT alone. Anyone promising a railway job for money is a tout.

How to Apply

Apply online at rrbapply.gov.in, to one RRB only. List every post you're eligible for in order of preference in that single application. The RRB choice is final and can't be changed in the modification window. Applying to more than one RRB gets all your applications rejected. Check the RRB-wise and zone-wise vacancies at Annexure-B of the CEN before you choose.

Your mobile number and email can't be changed once the account is created, and all communication comes by SMS and email. If you made an account for a 2024 or 2025 CEN, use the same one. Authenticate with DigiLocker or Aadhaar while creating the account, because Aadhaar biometric checks happen at the exam centre.

  • Minorities: Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains and Zoroastrians (Parsis).
  • EBC: annual family income below ₹50,000, shown by income certificate, BPL card or Izzat MST. It gives the fee concession only, not reservation. EBC, EWS and OBC are three different categories.

Key dates are under Important Dates. If you need a scribe, scribe details had their own window after corrections closed,, and the forms (including one for under 40 per cent disability with difficulty writing) are at Annexures V(A) to V(G).

Participating Institutes

The employer is Indian Railways, for posts in its Zonal Railways and Production Units. The recruiter is the Railway Recruitment Boards under the Ministry of Railways, twenty-one Boards running one common notice. Each Board's site is reached from rrb.indianrailways.gov.in.

  • Chief Law Assistant and Public Prosecutor: the legal side, including the railway statutes (RPF Act, Railways Act, Railway Property Act).
  • Junior Translator (Hindi): official-language work, and most of the vacancies.
  • Senior Publicity Inspector: publicity and public relations.
  • Staff and Welfare Inspector: labour and welfare administration.
  • Lab Assistant Grade III: materials testing for coaches and components.
  • Scientific Assistant and Scientific Supervisor: occupational psychology, meaning aptitude testing of running staff and cab ergonomics.

You apply to one Board only. Annexure-B shows how each post's vacancies split across Boards, and for several posts a given Board has one vacancy or none.

Exam Centres

The CBT is tentatively on 14 and 15 July 2026, per the schedule notice of 29 June 2026. Your exam city and date, and the free travel authority for SC and ST candidates, appear on rrb.indianrailways.gov.in 10 days before the exam. The e-call letter follows 4 days before.

Aadhaar-linked biometric checks happen before you enter the hall. Bring your original Aadhaar or an e-verified printout, make sure it's unlocked in the UIDAI system, and check its name, date of birth (as per Class 10), photo, address and father's name are right.

Dates and venues for the translation test, DV and medical are announced later. Requests to change date, shift or venue are not entertained.

Admit Card

The e-call letter is downloadable from 4 days before your exam date, on rrb.indianrailways.gov.in. The city and date link, with the SC and ST travel authority, opens 10 days before. For this cycle the e-call letter link went up on 10 July 2026.

Carry it with your original Aadhaar or an e-verified printout for the biometric check. Your login uses the mobile number and email from account creation, which can't be changed.

Result

No result has been published for CEN 08/2025 yet. Results, the DV list, medical calls and the selection list will appear on your chosen RRB's site via rrb.indianrailways.gov.in, under Exam Results and the headings that follow it, and you'll get an SMS and email.

Merit is the CBT score for every post. Once empanelled, posting depends on merit, medical standard and vacancies, and an appointment letter depends on vacancies still being available.

Cut Off

No cut-off exists for this cycle yet; the CBT is scheduled for 14 and 15 July 2026. Any figure going around belongs to an older notice with different vacancies and, for the law posts, a syllabus written before the 2023 sanhitas.

The floor is the minimum qualifying percentage under Exam Pattern. Above it, the bar is the last candidate within the vacancy count for your post, category and RRB, because DV calls only as many as there are vacancies. For Junior Translator, about 2,020 candidates (10 times 202) go to the translation test first. Results and any marks published appear on rrb.indianrailways.gov.in.

Preparation Tips

Work from your post's annexure

Professional Ability is 50 of the 100 marks, and most annexures tell you how many questions each topic carries. Split your time accordingly.

PostAnnexureWhere the marks are
Chief Law AssistantIXCode of Civil Procedure 5 to 7; Constitution and Labour Laws 3 to 5 each. One careful pass through the 1-to-2-question statutes is enough
Public ProsecutorXIISeven topics at 5 to 7 each, including the RPF Act 1957, Railways Act 1989 and Railway Property Act 1966, which general law courses skip
Staff and Welfare InspectorVIIIIndustrial relations, social security and wages at 9 to 11 each: up to 33 of the 50
Senior Publicity InspectorXCommunications and Mass Communication at 12 to 15 each, then Advertising and PR at 10 to 13 each
Lab Assistant Grade IIIXIMaterials 6 to 8, mechanical testing 4 to 8, non-destructive testing, and the coach-specific painting and plating topics
Scientific AssistantXIIISeven psychology topics at 5 to 8, plus Counselling and Training
Scientific SupervisorXIVThe same six, with Bio-Physiological Processes at 7 to 8
Junior Translator (Hindi)VII30 Hindi and 20 English questions across twenty named topics

For the law posts, study the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita and Sakshya Adhiniyam, not the codes they replaced. The Public Prosecutor paper gives the BNSS alone 5 to 7 questions.

The general half

Fifty marks shared by seven posts. Science stops at 10th standard CBSE; maths stops at mensuration, time and work and interest. Any RRB non-technical practice material is close enough in level. Don't go beyond it.

Pace and penalty

That's 54 seconds a question, and three wrong answers cancel a right one. Practise full papers at that pace with the penalty applied, and try the RRB mock test link before the day; it uses the real interface.

Before you apply

Check the professional part of your eligibility (Bar standing, diploma, experience) first. It's what ends candidatures at DV. Choose your RRB from Annexure-B: Scientific Supervisor has one vacancy nationally and Public Prosecutor seven. Give correct bank details or lose the ₹400 or ₹250 refund.

Sample Papers

No previous year papers are available for this exam. The RRBs don't keep a past-paper archive for it, and CEN 08/2025 provides no answer key window.

The closest thing is the free mock test link the RRBs post on rrb.indianrailways.gov.in about ten days before the CBT (4 July 2026 this cycle). It runs on the actual interface. The syllabus annexures VII to XIV in the CEN give the per-topic question counts.
