RSMSSB Lab Technician Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility

106 topics across 3 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.

RSMSSB Lab Technician is the Rajasthan Staff Selection Board's recruitment of laboratory technicians for the state health system. The Board was set up in 2014 as the Rajasthan Subordinate and Ministerial Services Selection Board, and candidates still search for it as RSMSSB. It recruits to posts with grade pay of Rs 3,600 and below.

Two quite different recruitments carry this name, so check which one you're reading about.

2020 Paramedical cadre: permanent, no exam

Advertisement No. 02/2020 (12 June 2020) called for 1,119 Lab Technician posts and 1,058 Assistant Radiographer posts in Medical and Health Services, Rajasthan. They're permanent posts at Pay Matrix Level L-8, under the Rajasthan Medical and Health Subordinate Service Rules, 1965 and, for scheduled areas, the Rajasthan Scheduled Areas Subordinate, Ministerial and Fourth Class Service Rules, 2014.

There was no written exam. Under Rule 19 of the 1965 Rules, merit is 70 per cent of the average of your Senior Secondary and diploma percentages, plus up to 30 marks for experience. That's why the top cut-off, 48.3329 of 100, looks low.

2025 contractual posts: a 150-question paper

Advertisement No. 01/2025 (28 January 2025), under the Rajasthan Contractual Hiring to Civil Posts Rules, 2022, covered 13,398 contract posts in 29 cadres for the National Health Mission and the Rajasthan Medical Education Society. Two of them are lab posts with the same entry rules: Contractual Medical Lab Technician (NHM) and Contractual Lab Technician (RajMES), advertised at 414 and 321 and totalling 785 by the result.

Both sat one paper, code XQ439, on the morning of 11 June 2025. Your employer preference in the form decided which post you got, and it moved the line: General closed at 234 for NHM and 223 for RajMES on the same paper.

Common to both

  • Senior Secondary Science, a Medical Lab Technician diploma and Rajasthan Para Medical Council registration.
  • Vacancies split into non scheduled and scheduled area; scheduled area posts are only for bona fide residents.
  • Within the women's quota, 8 per cent for widows and 2 per cent for divorced women.
  • Many posts went unfilled: 904 of 1,119 in 2020; 662 of 785 in 2025, and only 11 of the 55 scheduled area posts.

Exam Pattern

2020 Paramedical cadre: no paper

Clauses 12 and 13 of the 2020 advertisement set the basis of selection. No written test, interview or skill test.

Academic meritMaximum 70 Average of your Senior Secondary and Medical Lab Technician diploma percentages, taken at 70 per cent
Experience bonusMaximum 30 10 for one completed year, 20 for two, 30 for three. Nothing below one year

A year means 365 days of similar work under the Government of Rajasthan, the National Rural Health Mission, a Medicare Relief Society, the Chief Minister's BPL Jeevan Raksha Kosh, the AIDS Control Society, the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme, Medical College Jhalawar, the Integrated Disease Surveillance Project or the State Health and Family Welfare Institute. It must be certified on the advertisement's fifteen-row form, one form per spell, designation, rate of pay and place of posting.

Blanks cost as much as wrong answers

The advertisement only mentions minus 1 for a wrong answer. The Board's merit order of 20 November 2025 prints the full formula:

Total Marks = SUM of [(RQ × KF) − (WQ × 1)] − (Maximum Marks × Not Attempted Questions) / (Total Number of Questions × 3), where KF = (Maximum Marks / Total Questions) × (Total Questions / Valid Questions).

No question was deleted, so KF was exactly 3. In plain terms: plus 3 for right, minus 1 for wrong, minus 1 for blank. A guess on four options averages out to zero (3 × 0.25 − 1 × 0.75); a blank is a certain minus one.

Worse, leaving more than 10 per cent (over 15 of 150) unmarked disqualifies you. 107 candidates were removed from this paper for it.

So a Maths student qualified in 2020 but not in 2025, while the 2025 notice added Blood Bank Technology.

Registration. After Manju v. State (Writ Petition 13922/2017), the 2020 notice let you apply unregistered if you had applied to the Council by the closing date, with the certificate due at verification. The 2025 notice is stricter: registration must be held by the last date, or selection is cancelled.

Age

20202025
Reckoned on1 January 20211 January 2026
Minimum1821
Maximum4040
Blanket relaxation3 extra years for everyone, as no such notification had been issued after 2016None

Category relaxations are the same in both and don't add up; you take the largest:

  • General and EWS women: 5 years.
  • Rajasthan SC, ST, OBC and MBC men: 5 years; women of those categories: 10 years.
  • Ex-servicemen: upper limit 50 in 2020 under the Rajasthan Civil Services (Absorption of Ex-servicemen) Rules, 1988; 10 years in 2025, subject to the same ceiling.
  • Widows and divorced women: no upper limit below retirement age, with a death certificate or divorce decree.
  • PwBD (2025): 5 years beyond what the service rules allow.

Relaxation applies only where a post is actually reserved for that category.

Reservation

Reservation is for Rajasthan residents only. A reserved-category candidate from another state counts as General, pays the General fee and competes on the General line.

Women's reservation in 2020 was 30 per cent, horizontal; within it, 8 per cent for widows and 2 per cent for divorced women, each passing to the other and then to other women of the category if unfilled. MBC is 5 per cent, EWS 10 per cent, ex-servicemen 12.5 per cent and outstanding sportspersons 2 per cent.

A married OBC or MBC woman needs a non creamy layer certificate on her father's name, residence and income. One on her husband's isn't accepted.

Scheduled area posts

Only for bona fide residents of the scheduled area: resident before 1 January 1970, or born after with parents who were, or married into such a family. Scheduled area candidates can also apply for non scheduled posts, not the reverse.

Disability and other conditions

  • A reserved disability post needs a permanent certificate of 40 per cent or more. In 2020 only the medical board at Sawai Man Singh Hospital, Jaipur counted.
  • Marriage registration is mandatory (circular of 22 May 2006).
  • No more than one living spouse; no dowry.
  • No more than two children counting those born on or after 1 June 2002, with the advertisement's exceptions.
  • A health certificate from the Chief Medical and Health Officer or a district medical jurist, and character certificates (one from your last institution, two from non-relatives) under six months old.
Selection Process

2020 Paramedical cadre

  1. Online application through e-Mitra, a Common Service Centre or your own SSO ID.
  2. Merit list on academic marks plus experience bonus, category by category.
  3. Document verification: qualifications, experience, Council registration, police verification, character and health certificates.
  4. Recommendation to Medical and Health Services, Rajasthan.

One certified year of experience is worth 10 marks, against a General cut-off of 48.3329.

2025 contractual

  1. One Time Registration through SSO.
  2. Online application, including the Preference Section ranking NHM and RajMES.
  3. Written exam, XQ439, 11 June 2025.
  4. Provisional answer key, 14 August 2025, with objections.
  5. Merit list, 20 November 2025, followed by an online scrutiny form for document verification.
  6. Final answer key, 27 November 2025.
  7. Document verification by the Rajasthan Medical Education Society for both cadres.
  8. Final result and cut-offs, 29 January 2026; selected lists 31 January 2026.

Preference decides the post

Six pairs of cadres in the 2025 notice shared one paper each. You ranked the two employers when applying, and you couldn't change it afterwards. Posts go by merit, then preference. NHM closed above RajMES in every category except ST (162 for both): see the cut-off tables. A General candidate on 228 who put NHM first missed it and got RajMES.

  • Ends automatically when the contract ends.
  • Posts and terms can be changed, cut or withdrawn at any time, and the advertisement cancelled without reason.

No new permanent Lab Technician recruitment had been advertised as at 12 September 2026. Watch the Board's advertisements page.

Admit Card

The 2020 recruitment issued no admit card; keep the application receipt with its Application ID.

For 2025, download the admit card from the Board's website with your SSO ID. Nothing is posted. Release is announced in newspapers and on the site, and may be sent to your registered mobile and email. Bring the admit card and an original government photo ID. Being admitted is provisional and says nothing about eligibility.

Result

2020: office orders, not a result

The Board selected batches as verification cleared them, listing candidates by application number.

Order 193 came after Writ Petition 6787/2020 was withdrawn, and kept order 873's cut-offs. Final tally: 872 of 1,014 non scheduled and 32 of 105 scheduled, 904 of 1,119, with 215 unfilled, 73 of them scheduled area.

Assistant Radiographer ran separately to a revised result on 18 December 2023: 699 and 16 already recommended against 959 and 99, an order of 6 December 2023 cancelled, and 61 more non scheduled selections. Cut-offs: General 40.5358, General women 38.41, OBC 40.5358.

Careful with the results index: one 3 November 2021 order filed alongside these is for Investigator (Agriculture) 2019, with cut-offs of 114.2361 and 109.375 on a different paper. The Lab Technician order is 873.

2025: merit list

Preparation Tips

2020-type recruitment (no exam)

  • Register with the Rajasthan Para Medical Council in time.
  • Get every spell of experience certified on the advertisement's form. Under 365 days counts for nothing, so eleven months scores the same as none.

2025-type contractual paper

  • Answer all 150. A blank costs as much as a wrong answer, and more than 15 blanks disqualifies you.
  • Put most of your time into Part E, 270 of 450 marks, and within it hematology, blood banking and clinical pathology. Revise the Board's list, not your whole diploma.
  • Don't skip Part D. It's 45 marks on a two-line syllabus: NHM programmes and Ayushman Bharat.
  • Part A leans on Rajasthan: four of its seven items name the state. General Science stops at 10th standard.
  • Practise on the Board's own papers (see sample papers).

Paperwork

  • Get the One Time Registration right; it fixes your category on every form.
  • Fix errors within the seven-day window.
  • Married OBC or MBC women: get the non creamy layer certificate on your father's details.
  • Fill the Preference Section deliberately. In 2025 it moved the General line by 11 marks.
  • Don't skip an exam you hold an admit card for.
Sample Papers

The 2020 recruitment had no paper, so there are no past papers for it.

For XQ439, the Board published the final answer key (27 November 2025, all 150 answers) and the provisional key (14 August 2025). Keys for the other cadres of the same notice, built to the same plan with the same four general parts, are on the answer keys page, for example Contractual Pharma Assistant (738SE) and Compounder Ayurved (820BJ). The merit order of 20 November 2025 shows every qualified mark: 342 at the top, 158 at the bottom, 1,296 names for 730 posts.
