SGPGI Nursing Officer Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility
136 topics across 4 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
SGPGI Nursing Officer is direct recruitment to a Group B post at Pay Matrix Level 7 in the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Raebareli Road, Lucknow. The Institute was set up by Uttar Pradesh under a State Legislature Act in 1983 and runs its own recruitment: it writes the advertisement, sets the paper, declares the result and issues the appointment letter.
The live cycle is Advertisement No. I/08/1/Rectt/2025-26, dated 12 June 2025, for 1,200 posts. A second advertisement, I/42/1/Rectt/2025-26, published on 7 December 2025, adds 72 backlog posts to the same exam. That makes 1,272 Nursing Officer posts, the biggest block in an advertisement covering twelve posts.
| Advertisement | SC | ST | OBC | EWS | UR | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| I/08/1/Rectt/2025-26 (fresh) | 253 | 24 | 324 | 119 | 480 | 1,200 |
| I/42/1/Rectt/2025-26 (backlog) | 56 | 16 | 00 | – | – | 72 |
You can't apply for the 72 backlog posts. They're the unfilled SC and ST vacancies from Advertisement Nos. I/48/6 and I/48/4 of 2023-24, and the backlog advertisement says no online or offline application will be accepted for them. They're filled from people who already applied against I/08/1-12/Rectt/2025-26, first in order of merit, before the 1,200 fresh posts.
The exam changed late. The advertisement describes one two-hour, 100-mark paper. On 6 June 2026 the Examination Cell announced that Nursing Officer and Hospital Attendant Gr-II only would sit two stages, a Preliminary (Stage-I) and a Main (Stage-II). The Preliminary ran on 22 to 25 June 2026. As at 12 September 2026 no Stage-II date had been announced.
The post used to be called Sister Grade II. Advertisement I-68/Rectt/2022-23 says so, and older documents in the Institute's archive use that name.

Exam Pattern
The Examination Cell published the scheme on 1 June 2026. It's the same scheme the Institute has used since at least 2022-23.
| Component | Marks |
|---|---|
| Core subject related to the post, at the level of the qualification required | 60 |
| General English | 10 |
| General Knowledge | 10 |
| Reasoning | 10 |
| Mathematical Aptitude | 10 |
| Total | 100 |
| Mode | Computer Based Test, at centres in major cities of India |
| Duration | 2 hours |
| Question type | Multiple choice |
| Medium | English only, for every post except Group D |
| Stages, 2025-26 cycle | Preliminary (Stage-I) and Main (Stage-II), by notice of 6 June 2026 |
| Minimum qualifying marks | 50 per cent for UR, EWS and OBC; 45 per cent for SC and ST |
The 40 aptitude marks are the same for all twelve posts in the advertisement. The qualifying mark is on the total, and the total is three-fifths nursing. The advertisement's example of a "core section" is one where "60% questions pertained to the core subject Syllabus", defined by the Examination Section for each exam.
Negative marking
The 2025-26 advertisement doesn't state a deduction, though its tie-break counts "Number of wrong answers / negative marks". The previous advertisement for this post, I-68/Rectt/2022-23, gave 1 mark for a correct answer and deducted 1/3 for a wrong one, and the 2023 cut-offs fall on thirds. Check the scheme notice for your cycle.
Tie-break, then and now
| I-68/Rectt/2022-23 | I/08/1/Rectt/2025-26 | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Date of birth, older higher | Total marks of the tied candidates |
| 2 | Fewer wrong answers higher | Date of birth, older higher |
| 3 | – | Fewer wrong answers higher |
| 4 | – | Higher marks in the core section |
| 5 | – | Earlier application number higher |
Normalization across shifts
Nursing Officer sat over four days, so Annexure 1 of the advertisement applies. Scores are scaled to the shift with the highest average raw score:
Xn = (S2 / S1) × (X − Xav) + Yav
S2 is the standard deviation of the base shift, S1 that of your shift, X your raw score, Xav your shift's average and Yav the base shift's average. If the top shift has far fewer candidates than the others, the next one is used, and a shift below 70 per cent of average attendance can't be the base.
Syllabus
SGPGIMS publishes the syllabus in two parts: Part A, shared by every post in the advertisement, and Part B for Nursing Officer, four pages and sixty-five numbered items under nine heads. Both say the syllabus is "only Indicative".

Eligibility Criteria
Table 3 of the detailed advertisement gives two routes. Everything must be held as on 1 January 2025.
| Route | What is required |
|---|---|
| Degree route | B.Sc. (Hons) Nursing or B.Sc. Nursing from an Indian Nursing Council recognised Institute or University, or B.Sc. (Post Certificate) / Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing from an Indian Nursing Council recognised Institute, Board or University; and registration as Nurse and Midwife with a State or the Indian Nursing Council. No experience required. |
| Diploma route | Diploma in General Nursing Midwifery from an Indian Nursing Council recognised institution; and registration as Nurse and Midwife with a State or the Indian Nursing Council; and two years' experience in a hospital of at least 50 beds, acquired after the qualification. |
Experience counts whether the government or semi-government post was regular, outsourced or contractual, if it's certified (with an affidavit if asked). Only experience after the essential qualification counts. A higher qualification is not a disqualification.
Age
| Range | Not less than 18 and not more than 40 years |
| Reckoned on | 1 January 2025 |
| Why that date | Advertisements released 1 January to 30 June use 1 January; those released 1 July to 31 December use 1 July. This one is dated 12 June 2025. |
| SC, ST, OBC | Up to 5 years, as specified by the Government of Uttar Pradesh |
| Permanent government employees | Up to 5 years, on not less than 3 years' regular and continuous service in the relevant field |
| Ex-servicemen | Service in the armed forces is deducted from actual age; if the remainder exceeds the maximum by not more than 3 years the condition is treated as satisfied |
| Divyang | Up to 15 years |
Reservation
Reservation follows Uttar Pradesh policy, not the central rules.
| Vertical | Horizontal | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| SC | 21 per cent | Divyang | 4 per cent |
| ST | 2 per cent | Ex-serviceman | 5 per cent |
| OBC | 27 per cent | Dependants of freedom fighters | 2 per cent |
| EWS | 10 per cent | Female gender | 20 per cent |
- Reserved status is a UP status. A reserved-category candidate from another state is treated as unreserved. Domicile and reservation certificates must be issued by the UP government and verifiable online on its portal.
- The EWS certificate must be for 2025-26, on financial year 2024-25 income, with a cut-off date of 1 January 2025.
- For a woman, the caste certificate on the father's side is the valid one.
- Horizontal reservation for Divyang applies only to identified posts, under the UP Public Services reservation Act of 1993.
A Divyang candidate who needs a scribe must bring their own; neither SGPGIMS nor the exam agency provides one.
Selection Process
Selection is on the Common Recruitment Test marks alone. There's no interview: the Uttar Pradesh Direct Recruitment to Junior Level Posts (Discontinuation of Interview) Rules 2017 cover Group B (non-gazetted), Group C and Group D posts. Nursing Officer is Group B non-gazetted.
Nothing is checked before the paper. Every application with a fee is accepted provisionally, and age, qualification and experience are verified afterwards. If you're found ineligible at any stage, even after the merit list, the candidature is cancelled and the post forfeited. An admit card doesn't mean you're eligible. Check Table 3 against your own certificates before you pay.
The 2025-26 sequence
- Online application and fee, provisionally accepted.
- City intimation slip, at least 15 days before the paper.
- Final admit card, about 48 hours before your date.
- Preliminary (Stage-I) computer based test, 22 to 25 June 2026 for this post.
- Main (Stage-II) for those who clear Stage-I. No re-application, no further fee; dates and centres to be announced.
- Normalization where a post ran in more than one shift.
- Merit lists by category. The unreserved list draws on all candidates, including reserved ones; a reserved list only on that category.
- Backlog vacancies under I/42 filled first; the 1,200 fresh vacancies from candidates lower in the same list.
- Document verification, then appointment.
There's no skill test for Nursing Officer; that applies only to Stenographer and Senior Administrative Assistant. No TA or DA is paid for any stage, disputes go to the Lucknow courts only, and canvassing disqualifies.
Salary
The advertisement gives a pay level and a group, but no rupee figure.
| Post | Nursing Officer |
| Pay Level | Level 7 |
| Group | B (non-gazetted) |
| Pay rules | Those of the Government of Uttar Pradesh, as applied to an autonomous body created under a State Legislature Act |
What Level 7 pays
SGPGIMS printed the Level 7 band once, in its Staff Nurse advertisement for the Autonomous State Medical Colleges of Uttar Pradesh: Level-7 (₹44,900 – ₹1,42,400). Same level, same state pay matrix. Allowances come on top and neither document states them.
Where the post sits
It's the highest level of the twelve posts advertised in June 2025, and the only Group B one.
| Post | Level | Group |
|---|---|---|
| Nursing Officer | 7 | B |
| Junior Accounts Officer, Technical Officer (CWS Biomedical), Store Keeper, Medical Social Service Officer Gr-II | 6 | C |
| Nuclear Medicine Technologist, O.T. Assistant | 5 | C |
| Senior Administrative Assistant, Stenographer, CSSD Assistant, Draftsman | 4 | C |
| Hospital Attendant Gr-II | 1 | D |
Nuclear Medicine Technologist may be revised to Level 6; no such rider applies to Nursing Officer.

Participating Institutes
One institute: the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences.
| Established | 1983, under a State Legislature Act of Uttar Pradesh |
| Campus | 550 acres on Raebareli Road, 15 km from the main city of Lucknow |
| Status | Autonomous body; awards its own recognised degrees |
| Recruiting authority | The Director, SGPGIMS. The Recruitment Section runs the process and the Examination Cell sets and conducts the paper. |
It's a teaching hospital with D.M., M.Ch., M.D. and Ph.D. programmes and a College of Nursing, so you'd work alongside nursing students.
"Common Recruitment Test" means common to the twelve posts in one advertisement. It isn't the AIIMS Common Recruitment Examination, which serves 32 participating institutions, and it isn't NORCET.
SGPGIMS did once recruit for others: the Staff Nurse recruitment for the fourteen Autonomous State Medical Colleges of UP, Advertisement No. I/75/Rectt/Autonomous SMC/2022-23, on state government orders. The Director General Medical Education, UP, handled screening, verification, college allocation and appointment. Don't mix up its papers and cut-offs with this post's.
Exam Centres
| Mode | Computer Based Test |
| Where | Major cities of India, not only Uttar Pradesh |
| Choosing a city | Candidates give city preferences on the application form |
| City intimation | City intimation slip released at least 15 days before the examination date, naming the allotted city |
| Exact centre | Named on the final admit card, released about 48 hours before the candidate's date |
| TA / DA | None, for any stage |
The Institute can cancel or add cities and centres. Under the earlier I-68 advertisement, the three preferred cities couldn't be changed later, and if no slot was free the closest other city was given.
In 2025-26 city slips for all posts came out on 5 June 2026, updated on 8 June 2026.

| Final Admit Card | About 48 hours before the candidate's examination date | The exact examination centre address and the reporting time |
Book travel off the city slip; the venue comes only with the admit card. Download both from sgpgims.org.in with your registration or application number and date of birth. Neither is posted. Stage-II details will be sent to your registered e-mail and mobile, so keep both working.
Result
Results go up on the Institute's recruitment page, in this order:
- Raw scores by roll number, no names, not in merit order.
- Corrigendum and revised scores after grievances.
- Merit list and cut-off by category.
- List called for document verification.
- Selection list, then the list of appointment letters issued.
On 24 August 2026 merit lists came out for eight of the twelve posts, with skill-test and Senior Administrative Assistant lists on 27 August 2026. Nursing Officer and Hospital Attendant Gr-II weren't among them. They're the two-stage posts, so their June paper was only the Preliminary. As at 12 September 2026, no Stage-II date had been set.
Selection stays provisional until documents are verified. A wait list is kept under UP rules.
Cut Off
SGPGIMS publishes category-wise cut-offs, horizontal categories included. These are from its Merit/Cut-off list for the previous cycle, published on 6 August 2024.
Advt. No. I/68/Rectt/2022-23, exam held 18 February 2023
905 posts: ST 19, SC 191, OBC 243, UR 362, EWS 90.
| Category | Qualifying floor | Cut-off out of 100 |
|---|---|---|
| UR | 50 | 65.0008 |
| SC | 45 | 45.0008 |
| ST | 45 | 52.0006 |
| OBC | 50 | 51.6676 |
| EWS | 50 | 50.0007 |
| Horizontal category | Cut-off out of 100 |
|---|---|
| Ex-servicemen | 51.0011 |
| Dependants of freedom fighters | 55.0009 |
| Divyang | 50.6674 |
For SC and EWS the cut-off was the qualifying mark itself, just 0.0008 and 0.0007 above it: the Institute ran out of qualified candidates before it ran out of posts. OBC was 1.6676 clear, ST 7.0006, and only UR, 15.0008 above the floor, was set by competition. The 2025-26 floors are the same. The decimals fall on thirds plus a small tie-break increment, so 65 flat was below the line.
Other SGPGIMS posts show the floor leaving seats empty. CSSD Assistant (Advt. I/28/4/Rectt/2023-24, exam 15 December 2023, 20 posts): "None found qualified" in every category. Junior Engineer Telecom (I/28/2): none qualified. Technical Officer (Perfusion) (I/28/7): SC at 65.6670, none in OBC. Technician Dialysis (I/03/2/Rectt/2023-24, 48 posts): 45.6677.
No 2025-26 Nursing Officer cut-off exists yet, because Stage-II hasn't been held.
Preparation Tips
- Both halves have to land. 60 marks of nursing, 40 of aptitude, two hours, and a floor of 50 per cent (45 for SC and ST). In three of five categories last time, the last selected candidate was within two marks of the floor.
- Revise from the Part B syllabus. Community Health Nursing and Medical and Surgical Nursing carry ten items each, Basic Sciences eight, and Psychology, Fundamental Nursing and the administration head seven each.
- Don't skip the ninth head. Administration, supervision, education and trends in nursing is what clinical candidates neglect, and it's about one item in ten.
- Treat Part A as a fixed forty. It's the standard staff-selection aptitude syllabus and doesn't change between cycles.
- Decide your guessing policy before the day. With a one-third penalty, a blind guess among four options is worth (1 × 0.25) minus (0.333 × 0.75), slightly negative. Rule out one option and it turns positive. With no penalty, leave nothing blank.
- Check the website every week. In this cycle the scheme came eighteen days before the paper, the two-stage notice thirteen days before and the revised schedule ten days before.
- Read the previous cycle's files. No question papers are released, but the Recruitment Archive has roll-wise raw scores (16 July 2023, revised 7 August 2023) and the cut-off list. Together they show where most candidates scored. Memory-based papers circulate, but none are official.
Sample Papers
SGPGIMS doesn't release question papers, answer keys or response sheets for this recruitment.
The Recruitment Archive holds the previous cycle's roll-wise raw scores and cut-off list, and for an earlier cycle it posted a mock-test link (December 2023) to show the exam interface. New notices for the live cycle appear under Current Openings.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many Nursing Officer posts are there in the current cycle?
1,272: 1,200 fresh posts under I/08/1/Rectt/2025-26 and 72 SC and ST backlog posts under I/42/1/Rectt/2025-26, filled from one exam.
Can I apply for the 72 backlog posts?
Only by having applied against the June 2025 advertisement. There's no separate form or fee.
Is the exam one paper or two?
Two for this post in 2025-26: a Preliminary, held 22 to 25 June 2026, and a Main whose dates haven't been announced. Stage-II needs no new application or fee.
What is the paper worth and how long is it?
100 marks in 2 hours, multiple choice, English only: 60 core and 10 each of English, General Knowledge, Reasoning and Mathematical Aptitude.
Is there negative marking?
The 2025-26 advertisement doesn't say. The 2022-23 one deducted one third per wrong answer. Check the scheme notice for your cycle.
What are the minimum qualifying marks?
50 per cent for UR, EWS and OBC; 45 per cent for SC and ST.
Do I need experience?
Not with a B.Sc. Nursing or Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing. With a GNM diploma you need two years in a hospital of at least 50 beds, after qualifying.
What is the age limit?
18 to 40 on 1 January 2025, with relaxations for SC, ST, OBC, government employees, ex-servicemen and Divyang candidates.
I have a reserved-category certificate from another state. Does it count?
No. You're treated as unreserved. Certificates must be issued by the UP government.
What does it cost to apply?
₹1,180 for UR, OBC and EWS; ₹708 for SC and ST. Not refundable.
Is there an interview?
No. UP abolished interviews for these posts in 2017. Selection is on the test marks alone.
Is SGPGI Nursing Officer the same as SGPGI Staff Nurse?
No. Nursing Officer, formerly Sister Grade II, is SGPGI's own post. Staff Nurse was a separate recruitment SGPGI ran for the state, under I/75/Rectt/Autonomous SMC/2022-23, for 1,974 posts in fourteen Autonomous State Medical Colleges.
Why has no Nursing Officer result appeared when other posts have?
Because the June 2026 paper was only the Preliminary. No merit list can come until the Main is held.
