SGPGIMS Stenographer Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility
152 topics across 5 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
SGPGIMS is the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow, an autonomous institute set up by the Uttar Pradesh legislature in 1983 on a 550-acre campus on Raebareli Road. It recruits through its own Examination Cell. Stenographer is a Group C post at Level 4 of the pay matrix.
Stenographer isn't advertised on its own. It's one line in a combined advertisement for twelve posts that all sit the same Common Recruitment Test. Advertisement No. I/08/1-11/Rectt/2025-26, with I/08/12 for a backlog post, notified:
| Post | SC | ST | OBC | EWS | UR | Total | Level |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nursing Officer | 253 | 24 | 324 | 119 | 480 | 1,200 | 7 |
| O.T. Assistant (backlog) | 21 | 02 | 30 | – | 28 | 81 | 5 |
| Stenographer | 13 | 01 | 18 | 06 | 26 | 64 | 4 |

Stenographer is the third-largest block and the largest clerical one. Nursing Officer takes 1,200 of the roughly 1,479 vacancies. Only Nursing Officer and Hospital Attendant were split into preliminary and main stages; Stenographer stayed a single paper.
Three things set this recruitment apart:
- No interview. Selection is on written marks alone.
- The skill test carries no marks. It's pass or fail, and a high scorer who fails it is out.
- The reservation is Uttar Pradesh's. A reserved-category candidate from outside UP is treated as Unreserved.
In the 2025-26 cycle the tests ran from 19 to 25 June 2026, and on 27 August 2026 the Institute named 195 candidates for the Stenographer skill test against 64 posts.

Exam Pattern
The Common Recruitment Test
One paper serves every post in the advertisement; only the core section changes. The Examination Cell set out the split in a notice on 1 June 2026.
| Section | Marks |
|---|---|
| Core subject, related to the post and the level of the qualification required | 60 |
| General English | 10 |
| General Knowledge | 10 |
| Reasoning | 10 |
| Mathematical Aptitude | 10 |
| Total | 100 |
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Mode | Computer based test only |
| Duration | 2 hours |
| Question type | Multiple choice |
| Qualifying marks | 50% for General, EWS and OBC; 45% for SC and ST |
| Normalisation | Where a post's exam runs in more than one shift; formula at Annexure 1 of the advertisement |
| Interview | None |
Negative marking
The advertisement doesn't state a penalty, but its third tie-break rule is the candidate's "number of wrong answers / negative marks", fewer placed higher. Check the instructions issued with the admit card for your cycle.
The skill test
Stenographer and Senior Administrative Assistant candidates then take a stenography or typing test, run by the Institute's Examination Section. Shortlisting is three times the posts in each category, and everyone tied at the last place is called. The test is qualifying only; its marks aren't counted anywhere. How the shortlist is published and how the merit list follows are under selection process.
Syllabus
| Part | What it covers | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Part A | General Aptitude, common to every post | 40 |
| Part B | The core subject, specific to the post and set at the level of its qualification | 60 |
Part A, the forty common marks
From the Institute's Part A syllabus, ten marks each:
Reasoning, verbal and non-verbal: analogies, similarities and differences, spatial orientation, problem solving, analysis, judgement, decision making, discrimination, observation, relationship concepts, arithmetical reasoning, figural classification, arithmetic number series, non-verbal series, coding and decoding, statement conclusion, symbolic and number analogy, figural analogy, semantic and figural classification, semantic and number series, figural series, word building, numerical operations, symbolic operations, trends, space orientation and visualisation, Venn diagrams, drawing inferences, punched hole and pattern folding and unfolding, figural pattern folding and completion, indexing, address matching, date and city matching, classification of centre codes and roll numbers, small and capital letters and numbers coding and classification, embedded figures, critical thinking, emotional intelligence and social intelligence.
General Knowledge: awareness of the environment and its application to society, current events, everyday science, and India and its neighbours: history, culture, geography, the economy, general policy and scientific research.
Mathematics Aptitude: whole numbers, decimals and fractions; percentage, ratio and proportion, square roots, averages, interest, profit and loss, discount, partnership, elementary surds, graphs of linear equations; triangles and their centres, congruence and similarity; circles, chords, tangents, angles subtended by chords, common tangents; quadrilaterals, regular polygons, right prism, right circular cone and cylinder, sphere, hemispheres, rectangular parallelepiped, regular right pyramid on a triangular or square base; trigonometric ratios, degree and radian measures, standard identities, complementary angles, heights and distances; histogram, frequency polygon, bar diagram and pie chart.
General English, at matriculation or higher secondary level: spot the error, fill in the blanks, synonyms, antonyms, spelling, idioms and phrases, one word substitution, sentence improvement, active and passive voice, direct and indirect narration, shuffling of sentence parts and of sentences in a passage, and a comprehension passage.
Part B, the sixty core marks
SGPGIMS posts Part B post by post, after the advertisement. In the 2025-26 cycle the files went up in August 2025 and again in May 2026. The advertisement only says the core questions relate to "the post and the level of the qualifications required".
For Stenographer that's a graduate degree with shorthand at 80 words a minute, typing at 25 or 30, and knowledge of computer applications. Going by that qualification (not a published list), expect:
- Computer applications: word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, file handling, printing, email and internet basics. The qualification names this outright.
- Office procedure and correspondence: noting and drafting, letters, memoranda, filing.
- Shorthand and typing theory: conventions, transcription, speed and accuracy.
- English and Hindi at graduate level.
Download the Part B file for your cycle from the Examination Cell page once it appears. Speed isn't tested in the 100-mark paper at all; that's the separate skill test.
Eligibility Criteria
| Requirement | Standard |
|---|---|
| Education | Graduate |
| Stenography speed | 80 words per minute in Hindi or English |
| Typing speed | 25 w.p.m. in Hindi or 30 w.p.m. in English, on a computer or desktop |
| Computer | Knowledge of computer applications |
You need shorthand in one language and typing in one language to apply. But after appointment you must learn bilingual typing, 25 in Hindi and 30 in English, within the two-year probation. The establishment tests it, and if you fail during probation your services are terminated.
Age
Reckoned on 1 January 2025 for this cycle. The rule: 1 January if the advertisement issues between January and June, 1 July if between July and December.
| Category | Age |
|---|---|
| All candidates | 18 to 40 years |
| SC, ST and OBC | Up to 5 years relaxation, under UP government orders |
| Divyang candidates | Up to 15 years |
| Permanent government employees with at least 3 years of regular continuous service in the relevant field | Up to 5 years |
| Ex-Servicemen | Military service is deducted from actual age; if the result exceeds the limit by no more than 3 years, you qualify |
An upper limit of 40, against the usual 27 or 30, keeps this open to people who've aged out of most central clerical exams.
Reservation
| Vertical | Horizontal | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| SC | 21% | Divyang | 4% |
| ST | 2% | Ex-Servicemen | 5% |
| OBC | 27% | Dependants of freedom fighters | 2% |
| EWS | 10% | Female gender | 20% |
- A reserved-category candidate who isn't from Uttar Pradesh is treated as Unreserved.
- Domicile and reservation certificates must be issued by the Government of Uttar Pradesh, current, and verifiable online on the UP government portal.
- The EWS certificate must be valid for 2025-26 on 2024-25 income, cut-off date 1 January 2025.
- For a woman, the caste certificate on the father's side is the valid one.
Horizontal reservation applies only to identified posts, under the UP Public Services (Reservation for Physically Handicapped, Dependants of Freedom Fighters and Ex-Servicemen) Act 1993, amended in 2018 and 2021.
Other conditions
- Divyang candidates are covered by the Government of India scribe orders of 2018 and 2022, but you must arrange your own scribe; neither the Institute nor the exam body provides one.
- If you're in regular employment, bring a No Objection Certificate.
- A higher qualification doesn't disqualify you.
- Where experience is required, only experience after the essential qualification counts. Government and semi-government work counts whether regular, outsourced or contractual, with documents; the Institute may ask for an affidavit and check with the employer.
- Canvassing in any form disqualifies you.
- Disputes go to the Lucknow courts alone.
Selection Process
- Common Recruitment Test, computer based, two hours, 100 marks.
- Skill test in stenography and typing, qualifying only.
- Final merit list, on CRT marks alone, of those who passed the skill test.
- Document verification, with originals.
There's no interview. SGPGIMS has adopted the UP Direct Recruitment to Junior Level Posts (Discontinuation of Interview) Rules 2017, notified on 31 August 2017, for Group B non-gazetted, Group C and Group D posts.
The skill test
| Rule | Effect |
|---|---|
| Shortlist size | Three times the posts in each category |
| Ties at the last place | Everyone tied there is called |
| How the list is published | By roll number or alphabetically, not in merit order |
| What it's worth | Nothing. Qualifying only |
| When the CRT merit list appears | Only after the skill test |
| Who conducts it | The Examination Section of SGPGIMS, Lucknow |
| How long it runs | Until enough candidates are selected, or the merit list runs out |
The advertisement says it plainly: "a candidate who stands high in the merit list of the CRT may not be selected finally because he/she fails to qualify the Skill Test". The skill test comes second because, with so many applicants, holding it first isn't practical.
On 27 August 2026 the Institute named 195 candidates for the Stenographer skill test against 64 posts, 3.05 per post.
The merit list
Each category gets its own list. The Unreserved list considers everyone, reserved categories included; a reserved list considers only that category. Ties break in five steps:
- Total marks
- Date of birth, older candidate higher
- Fewer wrong answers or negative marks
- Higher marks in the 60-mark core section
- The earlier application number
Document verification
For each post the Institute publishes a merit or candidate list, a post-wise document verification checklist, and templates to bring: instructions, Declaration 1 on marital status, Declaration 2 on criminal antecedents and authenticity, an affidavit and a character certificate. Selection is provisional until then, and anything falsified, tampered with or fabricated cancels the appointment and may draw legal action.
- No travelling or dearness allowance for any stage.
- A wait list is kept under UP government rules, and a selection is valid only for its own advertisement.
The process can change after applications close: on 6 June 2026 the Institute split Hospital Attendant Gr-II and Nursing Officer only into preliminary and main stages, with no new application or fee. Watch the Examination Cell notices, not just the advertisement.
Salary
| Post | Group | Pay Level (7th CPC) |
|---|---|---|
| Stenographer | C | Level 4 |
| Senior Administrative Assistant | C | Level 4 |
| CSSD Assistant, Draftsman | C | Level 4 |
| Nuclear Medicine Technologist, O.T. Assistant | C | Level 5 |
| Junior Accounts Officer, Store Keeper, Technical Officer, Medical Social Service Officer Gr-II | C | Level 6 |
| Nursing Officer | B | Level 7 |
| Hospital Attendant Gr-II | D | Level 1 |
Level 4 starts at ₹25,500. SGPGIMS is a UP state institute, so allowances follow state rates, and the advertisement doesn't list them. It publishes the level, not an in-hand figure. For scale, the same advertisement prints a deputation Security Officer at Level 10, ₹56,100 to ₹1,77,500.
Probation is two years, and the bilingual typing condition under eligibility has to be met inside it or the job ends.
The Director can fill any, all or none of the posts without giving a reason, and anticipated vacancies can be cancelled mid-cycle; the advertisement says so of five of the six Junior Accounts Officer posts. Posts are on the Institute's own rolls, not a state secretariat cadre.
How to Apply
Apply online only, through the link on sgpgims.org.in. Don't post anything, not even a printout of the form, but keep one for yourself.
| Category | Fee | GST at 18% | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unreserved | ₹1,000 | ₹180 | ₹1,180 |
| OBC and EWS | ₹1,000 | ₹180 | ₹1,180 |
| SC and ST | ₹600 | ₹108 | ₹708 |
- The fee is never refunded.
- Horizontal categories (Divyang, Ex-Servicemen, women) pay by their original vertical category.
- Applying for more than one post means paying for each.
- Payment is through the State Bank of India, and the form can't be printed until the bank has adjusted the fee. Don't pay on the last day.
- You can edit the form after submitting, except the mobile number, email, Aadhaar number and category.
- Enter the advertisement number of the post. For Stenographer this cycle it was I/08/8/Rectt/2025-26.
- Keep the mobile and email active throughout; the city slip, admit card, result and verification schedule all come through them.
All applications are accepted provisionally. Eligibility is checked later.
Participating Institutes
Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow, recruits and examines through its own Examination Cell. No commission or outside agency is involved.
| Established | 1983, under an Act of the Uttar Pradesh legislature |
| Status | Autonomous institute of the Government of Uttar Pradesh |
| Campus | 550 acres on Raebareli Road, about 15 km from the centre of Lucknow |
| Address | Raebareli Road, Lucknow 226014 |

It trains postgraduates to D.M., M.Ch., M.D. and Ph.D. level, runs senior residency programmes, and its College of Medical Technology offers B.Sc. and M.Sc. nursing and paramedical courses. Its degrees are recognised by the Medical Council of India.
The Director issues the advertisement. The Examination Cell issues the syllabus, schedule, city slips, admit cards and raw scores, and runs the skill tests. The Joint Director (Administration) issues recruitment notices. The RSD Cell takes offline applications for posts such as deputation.
Check both Current Openings (live notices, merit lists, verification schedules; many items sit in collapsed panels) and the recruitment archive, which holds the earlier Stenographer cycle under Advt. No. I/28/1-7/Rectt/2023-24.
Exam Centres
The CRT is computer based only. The advertisement lists no cities; the schedule and cities go up separately on sgpgims.org.in, and your city comes on the city intimation slip (see admit card).
Raw scores can differ from final scores where a post runs in more than one shift, because of normalisation.
The skill test is held separately by the Examination Section of SGPGIMS, Lucknow, not at the CBT centres. Its schedule reaches shortlisted candidates through the website and email.
Important Dates
SGPGIMS has no fixed calendar; it advertises when vacancies build up. The 2025-26 cycle took fourteen months from advertisement to skill test shortlist.
| Event | Date |
|---|---|
| Detailed advertisement issued | 12 June 2025 |
| Advertisement uploaded | 13 June 2025 |
| Application form live | 19 June 2025 |
| Syllabus Part A uploaded | 23 June 2025 |
| Applications extended to | 31 July 2025 |
| Syllabus Part A and Part B uploaded | 23 August 2025 |
| Exam timeline notice; syllabus re-uploaded | 23 May 2026 |
| Notice on CRT duration and question criteria | 1 June 2026 |
| City intimation slips | 5 and 8 June 2026 |
| Two-stage notice for Nursing Officer and Hospital Attendant | 6 June 2026 |
| Revised CBT schedule | 9 June 2026 |
| Computer based tests | 19 to 25 June 2026 |
| Raw scores | Evening of each exam day |
| Corrigendum for a date error in one result file | 20 June 2026 |
| Document verification notice and schedule, with checklists | 14 July 2026 |
| Post-wise merit lists and verification checklists | 24 August 2026 |
| Stenographer skill test shortlist | 27 August 2026 |
The long gap is between applications and the exam, about eleven months. After the exam things moved fast. The syllabus also trails the advertisement, so don't wait for it before applying.
Admit Card
The admit card comes in two stages (notice of 23 May 2026):
| City Intimation Slip | Final Admit Card | |
|---|---|---|
| When | At least 15 days before the exam | About 48 hours before your exam date |
| What it carries | Your exam city and instructions | The centre address and reporting time |
Book travel on the city slip; two days isn't enough notice. Download both from sgpgims.org.in with your registration or application number and date of birth. Nothing is posted.
For this cycle the helpdesk was sgpgimshelpdesk@gmail.com and +91-9942875178, 10:00 to 17:00, Monday to Friday. These are issued per cycle.
Result
Results go up on Current Openings: roll-wise raw scores the evening of each exam day, then post-wise merit lists and verification checklists, then for Stenographer the skill test shortlist (by roll number), and finally the merit list once the skill test is over. On 24 August 2026 eight posts got merit lists; Stenographer and Senior Administrative Assistant waited for their skill tests.
No answer key, objection window or category-wise cut-off is published.
The recruitment archive holds the previous cycle's Stenographer skill test result and verification list, plus a phase II list dated 30 December 2024, so this recruitment does repeat.
Cut Off
SGPGIMS publishes qualifying percentages in advance and every candidate's raw score afterwards, but no category-wise closing mark.
| Category | Minimum in the CRT |
|---|---|
| General (Unreserved), EWS, OBC | 50 per cent |
| SC and ST | 45 per cent |
The real line is the three-to-one skill test shortlist:
| Category | Posts | Approximate shortlist at 3:1 |
|---|---|---|
| UR | 26 | 78 |
| OBC | 18 | 54 |
| SC | 13 | 39 |
| EWS | 06 | 18 |
| ST | 01 | 3 |
| Total | 64 | 192 |
The actual list had 195 names; the extra three are ties at the last place.
Preparation Tips
- Put the hours into the written paper. The skill test is pass or fail, so reach 80 words a minute in shorthand and the typing standard, then stop. Every extra mark in the CRT counts; extra speed doesn't.
- The core section is 60 marks, and the qualification names computer applications. Get word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, email and file handling solid, then office procedure, correspondence and shorthand theory. Download Part B the day it's posted.
- Part A is fully published. English is at matriculation or higher secondary level, and the maths runs from percentages to basic trigonometry. Staff Selection Commission stenographer and clerical papers on ssc.gov.in are reasonable practice for this half.
- Practise typing on a computer, since that's what the advertisement specifies.
- If you're applying on one language, start the other now. The bilingual typing condition has to be met inside the two-year probation.
- Check the UP certificate rule before you spend ₹1,180 on a fee you won't get back.
- Keep checking the Examination Cell page through the quiet months. The syllabus, schedule and stage changes all came by notice in 2025-26.
Sample Papers
No sample papers, previous year papers or answer keys are available for this exam as of now. SGPGIMS doesn't release them.
The closest official guides are the 13-page detailed advertisement, the Part A syllabus and the mark split notice of 1 June 2026. New papers, if any, would appear on Current Openings.

I am SC or OBC but not from Uttar Pradesh. Do I get reservation?
No. You're treated as Unreserved.
What is the fee?
₹1,180 for Unreserved, OBC and EWS, and ₹708 for SC and ST, GST included. Not refundable.
