Supreme Court Junior Court Assistant Syllabus, Exam Pattern
152 topics across 5 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
Junior Court Assistant is the Supreme Court of India's own entry-level recruitment, run by its Registry, not by any commission. It's a Group 'B' Non-Gazetted post at Level 6, starting basic ₹35,400, in New Delhi.
The 2025 cycle was advertised on 4 February 2025 (No. F.6/2025-SC(RC)) for a panel against 241 vacancies, and finished with a select list on 10 October 2025. A new advertisement was posted on the Recruitments page on 30 September 2026.
The advertisement gives an estimated gross: "approximate Gross Salary as per existing rate of allowances including HRA comes to ₹72,040 per month". Few recruiters publish one.
The stages
| Stage | What it is | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Objective Type written test, 100 questions: 50 General English including comprehension, 25 General Aptitude, 25 General Knowledge | 2 hours |
| 2 | Objective Type Computer Knowledge Test, 25 questions | with the above |
| 3 | Typing (English) test on computer, minimum 35 w.p.m., mistakes allowed up to 3 per cent of the total words to be typed | 10 minutes |
| 4 | Descriptive Test in English: comprehension passage, precis writing and essay writing | 2 hours |
| 5 | Interview before an Interview Board |
It's a language-heavy recruitment: half the objective paper is English and the descriptive paper is all English. Tests run at 128 centres in 28 states and union territories. The fee is ₹1,000 for General and OBC, ten times the ₹100 most central recruitment charges.

Supreme Court Junior Court Assistant Details
Exam Pattern
| Test | Detail | Time | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Objective, multiple choice | 100 questions: 50 General English including comprehension, 25 General Aptitude, 25 General Knowledge | 2 hours |
| 2 | Objective Computer Knowledge Test | 25 questions | |
| 3 | Typing (English) on computer | at least 35 w.p.m., mistakes up to 3 per cent of the total words to be typed | 10 minutes |
| 4 | Descriptive Test in English | Comprehension passage, precis writing and essay writing | 2 hours |
Each stage gates the next:
- Qualify the objective test and the Computer Knowledge Test to be called for typing and the descriptive test.
- Qualify those to be interviewed, where you need minimum qualifying marks. No more than three candidates per vacancy (1:3) are called.
- Clear everything and you're empanelled in order of merit.
The 3 per cent typing allowance counts against the words in the passage, not the words you manage. Differently abled candidates get the same concessions as SSC or UPSC allow in written and typing tests.
Syllabus
The advertisement names components, not a topic list.
| Component | Questions | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| General English | 50 | Grammar, usage and vocabulary, including comprehension |
| General Aptitude | 25 | Graduate-level aptitude |
| General Knowledge | 25 | Not narrowed; for a court, lean towards the Constitution, the judiciary and current affairs |
| Computer Knowledge | 25, separate test | Checks the essential qualification of knowledge of computer operation |
Descriptive Test in English, 2 hours
- Comprehension: answering on a passage, in writing.
- Precis: condensing a passage faithfully to a set length. Most candidates meet it for the first time here.
- Essay: sustained argument in English.
English is tested twice, objectively and in writing. In most clerical recruitment it's a quarter of the paper or less.
Eligibility Criteria
Essential qualifications, all three
- A bachelor's degree from a recognised university, any stream
- English typing on a computer at 35 w.p.m. or more
- Knowledge of computer operation
Typing is an eligibility condition as well as a test, so you need the speed before you apply.
Age
18 to 30 on the closing date (8 March 2025 in the 2025 cycle). Usual relaxation for SC, ST, OBC, differently abled, ex-servicemen and dependents of freedom fighters under Government rules; the advertisement doesn't print a table.
- No upper age limit for the Supreme Court Registry's own staff.
- No relaxation for staff of other Government departments.
Reservation
SC, ST and differently abled reservation follows Government of India rules for the pay scale, subject to any variation the Chief Justice specifies. Freedom fighters' dependents follow the Chief Justice's orders.
Things that cancel a candidature
- Your category can't be changed after you apply, and a General or OBC candidate paying the reserved fee isn't considered.
- Name and date of birth must match your Class 10 certificate; a name change needs a gazette notification and the form in the new name.
- Admission is provisional at every stage and documents are checked at the interview. Failing any condition, at any time, cancels you without notice.
- Staff of State or Central Government departments, banks or PSUs need an employer's No Objection Certificate at interview.
- Impersonation, false documents or suppressing information can bring criminal prosecution.
Selection Process
- Objective written test (100 questions) and Computer Knowledge Test (25).
- Typing test and descriptive test, for those who qualify both.
- Interview, capped at 1:3, with minimum qualifying marks.
- Panel in order of merit, with a select list and a wait list.
A place on the panel doesn't give a right to appointment. Vacancies are tentative, and the Registry can shortlist in any manner it thinks fit and cancel, restrict, enlarge or change the process without notice.
How 2025 ran
| Date | Stage |
|---|---|
| 4 February 2025 | Advertisement, panel against 241 vacancies |
| 5 February to 8 March 2025 | Online applications |
| 13 April 2025 | Computer based objective test |
| 16 April 2025 | Objections to the answer key invited |
| 22 April 2025 | Change of Answer Key |
| 9 May 2025 | Score card of the written test |
| 4 June 2025 | Typing test |
| 14 July 2025 | Typing result |
| 23 July 2025 | Descriptive test notice |
| 4 September 2025 | Descriptive result |
| 8 to 16 September 2025 | Interviews, schedules revised several times |
| 10 October 2025 | Interview result, select list and wait list |
About eight months, five separately scheduled stages. No TA or DA is paid for any of them, and disputes go to Delhi courts.
Salary
| Item | What the advertisement says |
|---|---|
| Classification | Group 'B' Non-Gazetted |
| Pay | Level 6 of the Pay Matrix |
| Initial Basic Pay | ₹35,400 |
| Approximate Gross Salary, at existing allowances including HRA | ₹72,040 per month |
| Pre-revised scale | PB-2 with Grade Pay of ₹4,200 |
That gross moves with DA. It's before NPS and health scheme deductions, and the HRA is Delhi's, since the post is at the Supreme Court in New Delhi. There's no state cadre or allocation.
For scale: Level 6 is the same level as a central Junior Engineer (₹35,400), and two above a Delhi Police Head Constable (Level 4, ₹25,500). That's a strong start for a degree plus 35 w.p.m., which is why the field for 241 posts is national.

| 2025 cycle | Date |

Participating Institutes
One employer: the Supreme Court of India, recruiting to its own establishment through the Registry (Recruitment Cell). The advertisement is issued by the Registrar (Recruitment). Government of India rules are the baseline, but the Chief Justice can vary them for this establishment.
Don't confuse it with these
| Post | What it is |
|---|---|
| Junior Court Assistant | This one. Level 6, degree plus 35 w.p.m. typing |
| Junior Court Assistant-cum-Junior Programmer and Senior Court Assistant-cum-Senior Programmer | Technical posts, advertised June 2025, syllabus published April 2026 |
| Senior Court Assistant | Advertised July 2025 and February 2026, with Assistant Editor, SCR and Assistant Director, Supreme Court Museum |
| Junior Court Attendant (cooking knowing) | Written test plus a practical trade skill test |
| Law Clerk-cum-Research Associate | A short-term contract for law graduates, not a post |
The Registry also publishes a model yearly calendar for direct recruitment, the best warning of the next cycle.
Exam Centres
128 centres across 28 states and union territories, listed in Annexure-A of each advertisement. In 2025 they included:
| State | Cities named in Annexure-A |
|---|---|

| West Bengal | Asansol, Burdwan, Durgapur, Kolkata, Siliguri |

Important Dates
A new Junior Court Assistant advertisement went up on 30 September 2026: detailed advertisement (PDF). Take this cycle's dates, vacancies and fee from it. The 2025 cycle, for reference:

Admit Card
Nothing is posted. Download each admit card from the Recruitments page with your Application Number. There are four: written test (after a city notice and a mock link), typing test, descriptive test, and an interview schedule that can be revised, so check the site, not an old download.
At the interview bring your degree and mark sheets, your Class 10 certificate (and any gazette notification for a name change), your category certificate, and an employer's NOC if you work in government, a bank or a PSU.
Result
Every stage has its own dated notice on the Recruitments page, and results also come by SMS and email. The Registry publishes a score card after the written test, not just a pass list.
The 2025 cycle ended on 10 October 2025 with the interview result, a select list and a wait list. Being on either is still not an appointment.
Cut Off
The Registry doesn't publish cut-off marks for this post, and the advertisement doesn't print minimum qualifying percentages. What it does publish is each candidate's score: the score card notice for the 2025 written test came on 9 May 2025, about four weeks after the paper, followed by stage-wise results on the Recruitments page.
The one fixed ratio is the 1:3 interview cap: with 241 vacancies, about 723 candidates at most.
Preparation Tips
- Give English more than half your time. It's 50 of 100 objective questions and the whole descriptive paper.
- Practise precis. Keep the proportions and argument of the original, use your own words, hit the word count. Work on editorial-length prose.
- Type comfortably above 35 w.p.m. Failing typing ends the attempt after you've cleared the written test, and 3 per cent of the passage is a tight error budget. Practise ten-minute passages.
- Treat Computer Knowledge as a subject: office applications, files, internet and email, basic hardware and operating systems.
- Bias General Knowledge towards the Constitution, the courts and current affairs.
- Use the mock link; in 2025 it came six days before the test.
- Use the answer key objection window. The 2025 key was changed after objections, and one question matters with a 1:3 interview cap.
- Get documents straight early: Class 10 name and date of birth, category, NOC.
- Budget for travel; no TA or DA is paid.
Sample Papers
No previous question papers are published for Junior Court Assistant. (The Court does host past papers for its Law Clerk exam, six years of them, but not for this post.)
In 2025 the Registry posted the answer key for objections, a revised key and a mock test link on the Recruitments page, including the Change of Answer Key of Computer Based Objective Type Written Test (MCQ) held on 13.04.2025, published 22 April 2025. The key is a study document in its own right.
