TNPSC Typist Exam Pattern, Eligibility, Important Dates

181 topics across 6 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.

Typist posts in Tamil Nadu government offices, the courts' ministerial service and several boards are filled by TNPSC through the Group 4 exam. There is no separate typist test: you write the common Group 4 paper, and your typewriting certificates decide whether you are eligible and where you stand among candidates with equal marks.

Notification 11/2026 of 6 October 2026 has 1,572 Typist vacancies under seven post codes, plus 464 steno and shorthand posts:

Exam Pattern

Typing speed is not tested in the exam. Your certificates stand in for it. The written paper is the standard Group 4 one: Tamil Eligibility-cum-Scoring Test (100 questions, 150 marks, 60 to qualify), General Studies (75 questions) and Aptitude (25 questions), 300 marks in three hours on OMR.

Eligibility Criteria

Technical qualification

For the government and court posts (2200, 4200) you need SSLC and a pass in the Government Technical Examination in typewriting in one of these combinations:

  • Higher (Senior) grade in both Tamil and English
  • Higher grade in Tamil and Lower (Junior) grade in English
  • Higher grade in English and Lower grade in Tamil

You also need the Certificate Course in Computer on Office Automation from the Directorate of Technical Education. If you don't have it yet you can still apply and finish it during probation, or within two years of joining.

  • Municipal Council (3844) and Greater Chennai Corporation (3852): Senior grade in both languages is required; there is no Lower-grade route.
  • Waqf Board (3846): Senior grade in both languages, and open only to Muslims.
  • Police Housing Corporation (3817): Higher Secondary, not SSLC, with Higher grade in one language and Lower in the other.
  • Blind and low vision candidates cannot take Judicial Department posts.

Every certificate must be dated on or before 6 October 2026, or you must show the result was out by then.

Age on 1 July 2026

At least 18. Others must be under 30 (40 if disabled, 48 for ex-servicemen). BC, BCM and MBC/DC candidates must be under 32 and SC, SC(A) and ST under 35, with no upper limit for those who studied beyond SSLC. Police Housing Corporation typists have no upper age limit for anyone.

Selection Process

After onscreen certificate checks, Typist candidates are called to physical verification and counselling at 1:3 for the general turn and 1:2 for reserved groups, a wider net than the 1:1.5 used for reserved Junior Assistant candidates. Within each department the order of selection follows your typewriting grade:

  1. Higher grade in Tamil and English
  2. Higher in Tamil, Lower in English
  3. Higher in English, Lower in Tamil

So a candidate with Higher in both languages is picked ahead of one with a Lower grade, and in a tie on marks the higher typing grade ranks first. For the Police Housing Corporation the order is reversed: Higher English first.

How to Apply

Apply through the TNPSC portal with your One Time Registration. Fee ₹100. Enter every typewriting and shorthand grade you hold, with certificate numbers. A claim you cannot back with an uploaded certificate is rejected.

Important Dates

Applications for 11/2026 close on 5 November 2026 at 11.59 pm, with corrections from 9 to 11 November. The exam is on 10 January 2027. The previous Group 4 exam was on 12 July 2025.

Result

The Group 4 marks and rank page lists every candidate. Typist allotments are made at counselling after certificate checks.

Preparation Tips
  • If you have Lower grade in one language, clearing Higher grade before the next notification can move you up the selection order.
  • Finish the Office Automation course early; it saves trouble during probation.
  • The written paper still decides most of your rank, so prepare Tamil and General Studies with old TNPSC papers.
