UP Police Jail Warder Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility
106 topics across 3 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
Direct recruitment to Jail Warder in the Prison Administration and Reform Department, Uttar Pradesh, run by the Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board (UPPRPB), Lucknow. The employer is the prisons department, not the police, but the police board runs the exam, which is why it looks like the constable exam.
| Conducted by | Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board |
| Employer | Prison Administration and Reform Department, Uttar Pradesh |
| Governed by | The UP Prison Administration and Reform Department Jail Warder Cadre Service Rules, 2016, made under Article 309 of the Constitution, amended in 2017 and 2025 |
| Exam rule now in force | Rule 15(2), as substituted by the Second Amendment Rules, 2025, notified 31 December 2025 |
| Written exam | One objective paper, 300 marks |
No Jail Warder recruitment is open right now. When the file was last checked, the Board's Direct Recruitment page on uppbpb.gov.in carried one entry: 55 posts of Programmer Grade-2, last date 31 January 2024. Posts, dates, syllabus and exam procedure come with each advertisement; the rules stay in force between cycles.
On the same day, 31 December 2025, rule 15(2) of the UP Police Constable and Head Constable Service Rules was replaced in identical terms, so the two written exams are now the same shape.

| Qualifying marks | None in the rule | 30 / 25 / 25 / 20 per cent |

Syllabus
The rule names the subjects and leaves the detail to the Board: the Board will decide the detailed syllabus for the examination and display it on its website. No topic list or mark split is published yet, since no cycle is open. It will appear on uppbpb.gov.in with the next advertisement.
- General Knowledge
- General Hindi
- Numerical ability
- Mental Aptitude
- Mental Ability
- Reasoning
- Logical ability
The 2025 wording splits numerical from mental ability and drops "Intelligence Quotient".
Eligibility Criteria
The minimum qualifying marks work as an eligibility bar: candidates failing to obtain the above minimum qualifying marks in the written examination shall not be eligible for recruitment.
| Category | Minimum | Marks out of 300 |
|---|---|---|
| Unreserved | 30 per cent | 90 |
| Economically Weaker Section | 25 per cent | 75 |
| Other Backward Class | 25 per cent | 75 |
| Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe | 20 per cent | 60 |
In a multi-shift cycle these apply to normalized marks.
Age, education, physical standards and reservation are set by the Jail Warder Cadre Service Rules, 2016 as amended in 2017, and applied through each advertisement. The Board publishes the full manual under Recruitment Rules on uppbpb.gov.in.
Selection Process
Rule 15(2) fixes the 300-mark paper, its subjects and the qualifying marks. It leaves to the Board the syllabus, the detailed procedure, the mode and any normalization, all to be published on uppbpb.gov.in and in the advertisement.
The stages after the written exam, including physical standards and tests, are in the 2016 rules and their appendices and are stated in each advertisement. None is open at present.
Salary
The pay scale is set by state pay rules and printed in each advertisement; none is open now, so check the next one on uppbpb.gov.in.
A Jail Warder is the entry rank of custodial staff in UP prisons, in the Jail Warder Cadre Service, a service separate from the police. Its rules are made under Article 309; the constable rules are made under the Police Act, 1861.
How to Apply
Apply through the Direct Recruitment section of uppbpb.gov.in when an advertisement opens. It lists each open recruitment with the number of posts and last date. No Jail Warder advertisement is open now.
Questions go to the Board at Tulsi Ganga Complex, 19-C Vidhan Sabha Marg, Lucknow 226001, sampark@uppbpb.gov.in, 0522-2235752, or the CUG number +91-9454404786. There's also an enquiry form on the Contact and Control Room page.
Participating Institutes
| Body | Role |
|---|---|
| UP Police Recruitment and Promotion Board | Runs the recruitment; sets syllabus, procedure, mode and normalization |
| Prison Administration and Reform Department | The employer; makes the cadre rules. The 2025 amendment was signed by its Principal Secretary and circulated by its Joint Secretary |
| Governor of Uttar Pradesh | Makes the rules under the proviso to Article 309 |
| Superintendent, Government Press, Allahabad | Publishes them in Part-4, Section-ka of the UP Extraordinary Gazette, in Hindi and English |
UPPRPB publishes service manuals for eleven cadres: Sub-Inspector and Inspector (Civilian Police), Civil Police Constable and Head Constable, Provincial Armed Constabulary and Territorial Armed Constabulary Subordinate Officer, Skilled Sportspersons, Police Computer Staff (Non-Gazetted), Fire Service, Police Ministerial, Accounts and Confidential Assistant Cadres (Service Rules 2015), Jail Warder Service, Radio Police Service, Mounted Police and Special Security Force.
Its site also carries Government Orders, Important Court Decisions, Disposed Representation (how candidates' representations were decided), a Cyber Security and Preventive Action Cell and a Writ Management Software link.
Exam Centres
No centres are listed, because no Jail Warder recruitment is open. The Board decides per cycle whether the exam is in one shift, several shifts or on computer, and publishes centres and reporting details with the advertisement on uppbpb.gov.in.
Important Dates
| Instrument | Date | What it did |
|---|---|---|
| Jail Warder Cadre Service Rules | 2016 | The rules in force |
| First Amendment Rules | 2017 | |
| Second Amendment Rules, notification 1856/22-1-2025-22/2013 | 31 December 2025 | Replaced rule 15(2), in force at once |
No recruitment dates are available as of now. The next Jail Warder advertisement, with its application window and exam dates, will appear on the Direct Recruitment page of uppbpb.gov.in. The Board doesn't follow a fixed annual calendar.
Admit Card
No admit card is available as of now, since no Jail Warder recruitment is open. When one is, admit card details come with the Board's published exam procedure on uppbpb.gov.in.
Result
No result is pending, since no cycle is open. Results are published by the Board on uppbpb.gov.in with the advertisement they belong to. Its Important Court Decisions and Disposed Representation sections are where to look if a result is disputed.
In a multi-shift cycle, scores are normalized, so raw marks from different shifts can't be compared.
Cut Off
No closing marks are available for the current rules; none has been set since the exam rule was replaced on 31 December 2025, and earlier figures came from a different rule. The fixed floor is the 30, 25, 25 and 20 per cent qualifying mark (90, 75, 75 and 60 out of 300). Closing marks will be published with each result on uppbpb.gov.in.
Preparation Tips
- Use current material. Anything written before 31 December 2025 describes the old rule, without qualifying marks or normalization.
- Prepare for both exams at once. The UP Police Constable written paper (Police Constable and Head Constable Service Rules, 2015, Fourth Amendment Rules, 2025) is now the same 300-mark shape with the same qualifying figures. The subject wording differs slightly, and the employers and later stages differ.
- Cover all seven subjects; the rule doesn't split the marks between them.
- Find the Board's detailed procedure before the exam, since that now decides negative marking.
- Read the Second Amendment Rules, 2025, which prints the old and new rule side by side.
Sample Papers
No sample papers or previous year papers are available for UP Jail Warder as of now. The Board hasn't published any.
The syllabus and exam procedure will be posted on uppbpb.gov.in with the next advertisement. Until then, the Second Amendment Rules, 2025 is the official statement of the exam.
