UPRVUNL Staff Nurse Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility
136 topics across 4 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
UPRVUNL Staff Nurse recruits nurses for the hospitals and dispensaries of the Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited, the state's power generation company. The Nigam runs the thermal power stations, and medical facilities for the staff and families who live at them. That's where the Staff Nurse works.
The U.P. Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Seva Aayog, the Nigam's own service commission, runs the recruitment and publishes everything on uprvunl.org.
There has been one Staff Nurse recruitment so far: Advertisement No. U-37/UPRVUSA/2019, dated 4 March 2020, where Staff Nurse was post code 8 among twelve posts. It ended with the cut-off notice of 8 December 2021. As of 12 September 2026 the recruitment notices page shows no later Staff Nurse advertisement. The Commission tends to reuse its advertisement text, so expect a new one to look similar.

Exam Pattern
One objective Computer Based Test, three hours:
| Part | Content | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Part-I | The syllabus of the Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery recognised by the U.P. Nursing Council | 150 | 150 |
| Part-II | General Hindi, General Knowledge and Reasoning | 50 | 50 |
| Total | 200 | 200 | |
- One mark per question. (The Assistant Review Officer paper in the same advertisement gives two, with half a mark off.)
- 0.25 deducted per wrong answer. Nothing for a blank.
A blind guess on four options gains 0.25 on average and loses 0.1875, so it's slightly in your favour. Rule out one option and it's clearly worth answering.
Qualifying percentage
| Category | Minimum percentage | Marks out of 200 |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe | 28 per cent | 56 |
| All other categories | 33 per cent | 66 |
That's the floor, not the selection line (see Cut-off details).
No normalisation
The Staff Nurse paper ran in a single shift, so marks are raw. Only Technician Grade-II Electrician was normalised in this advertisement.
Syllabus
The advertisement doesn't print a topic list. It defines the syllabus as the Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery recognised by the U.P. Nursing Council, which is your own qualifying course. The Commission published a separate syllabus only for Assistant Review Officer (25 August 2020), none for Staff Nurse.
Part-I: nursing and midwifery, 150 questions
The council-recognised GNM course runs three years plus internship. Its subjects:
| Area | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Anatomy and Physiology | Body systems, structure and function |
| Microbiology | Organisms, infection, sterilisation and asepsis, hospital infection control |
| Fundamentals of Nursing | Nursing process, assessment, vital signs, hygiene, positioning, records and reports |
| First Aid | Bleeding, fractures, burns, poisoning, shock, drowning, transport of the injured |
| Personal Hygiene and Community Health Nursing | Environmental health, water and sanitation, national health programmes, family welfare |
| Medical Surgical Nursing | Disorders of each system, pre and post operative care, wound care, the operation theatre |
| Pharmacology | Drug classes, routes, dosage calculation, adverse effects, the rights of medication administration |
| Midwifery and Gynaecological Nursing | Antenatal, intranatal and postnatal care, abnormal labour, obstetric emergencies, family planning |

| Professional Trends and Adjustment | Ethics, the council and registration, a nurse's legal responsibilities |
Part-II: 50 questions
General Hindi, General Knowledge and Reasoning, with no split given.
- General Hindi: grammar, vocabulary, idiom, error correction, comprehension.
- General Knowledge: current affairs, polity, history, geography, economy, science, and Uttar Pradesh in particular.
- Reasoning: series, analogy, classification, coding, blood relations, direction, syllogism, seating arrangement, non-verbal.

The registration certificate is checked at document verification.

Age, as on 1 January 2020
| Post | Minimum | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Staff Nurse (post code 8) | 18 years | 40 years |
| Pharmacist and Technician Grade-II | 18 years | 40 years |
| Assistant Engineer (Trainee), Accounts Officer (Trainee), Assistant Review Officer | 21 years | 40 years |
| Category | Relaxation |
|---|---|

| Ex-servicemen with at least five years of army service, original residents of Uttar Pradesh | Actual age less the period of service, provided the result is not more than 3 years above the maximum |
| Apprentices under the Apprenticeship Act 1961 | The apprenticeship period or one year, whichever is less |
You get one relaxation only, whichever helps most.
Reservation
- SC, ST, OBC (NCL), dependants of freedom fighters, ex-servicemen and EWS, as per UP rules.
- Only original residents of Uttar Pradesh can claim reservation. Others can apply as unreserved.
- The category in your application can't be changed later.
Two more conditions
- A candidate with more than one living spouse isn't eligible.
- If you already work for a government or semi-government body, you need a no objection certificate at appointment.
Vacancies
| Version | Total | UR | OBC (NCL) | SC | ST | EWS | ESM |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Advertisement, 4 March 2020 | 18 | 10 | 02 | 05 | − | 01 | 01 |
| Notice, 4 July 2020 | 23 | 13 | 03 | 06 | − | 01 | 01 |
The ex-serviceman post is horizontal, carved out of the other categories. No ST post either time. The same notice raised Assistant Engineer (Trainee) E&M to 35, Janpad to 14 and Pharmacist to 18. The Nigam can change vacancy numbers as needed.
Selection Process
Staff Nurse has the shortest route in the advertisement:
| Posts | Stages | Shortlisting ratio |
|---|---|---|
| Assistant Engineer (Trainee) E&M and Janpad, Accounts Officer (Trainee) | CBT, document verification, interview of 20 marks | three times |
| Assistant Review Officer | CBT, descriptive paper, typing test, document verification | three times, then one and a half times |
| Staff Nurse and Pharmacist | CBT, then document verification | one and a half times |
| Technician Grade-II | CBT, then document verification | one and a half times |
- Apply online in three steps, paying last through SBI Collect.
- CBT. You're admitted provisionally on what you declared; admission gives no right to selection.
- Qualify at 28 per cent (SC/ST) or 33 per cent (others).
- Shortlisting at one and a half times the vacancies, category wise. Everyone tied at the last rank is called.
- Document verification at Lucknow, against originals. Bring originals, copies of your uploads and the application printout. A mismatch with what you uploaded can cancel the candidature.
- Final list on merit, category wise.
Ties
- More marks in Part-I (nursing).
- Then more in Part-II.
- Then the older candidate.
A candidate who did one year's training in the Nigam under the Apprentices Act 1961 gets preference on equal marks: apprentice first, then earlier completion, then age.
If wrong information comes to light later, even after appointment, the Nigam can cancel without giving reasons.
Salary
| Post | Post code | Pay matrix level | Initial pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Assistant Engineer (Trainee) E&M, Janpad, Accounts Officer (Trainee) | 1 to 6 | Level-10 | Rs 56,100 to Rs 1,77,500 |
| Assistant Review Officer | 7 | Level-06 | Rs 36,800 to Rs 1,16,500 |
| Staff Nurse | 8 | Level-06 | Rs 36,800 to Rs 1,16,500 |
| Pharmacist | 9 | Level-05 | Rs 29,800 to Rs 94,300 |
| Technician Grade-II | 10, 11, 12 | Level-04 | Rs 27,200 to Rs 86,100 |
Allowances follow the Nigam's rules; the advertisement doesn't list them. Staff Nurse is one level above Pharmacist.
- No pension. Contributory provident fund only.
- Shift work at a thermal project. Only Janpad, Accounts Officer and Assistant Review Officer are exempt; Staff Nurse isn't.
- No bond. The Rs 3,00,000 five-year bond applies to the Assistant Engineer and Accounts Officer posts, not Staff Nurse.

Result
The answer key goes up on the Nigam's website within two to four days of the paper, and you have three days from upload to object, with evidence. That window ran for the CBTs of 4 and 5 July 2021.
No separate merit list was published. The result record is the cut-off notice of 8 December 2021. Disputes go to the courts at Lucknow.
Cut Off
From Table-B of the notice of 8 December 2021, Total CBT Cut-off Marks out of Max. Marks 200:
| Post | Post code | UR | OBC (NCL) | SC | ST | EWS | ESM | DFF |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Staff Nurse | 8 | 128.75 | − | − | − | − | − | − |
| Pharmacist | 9 | 92.50 | 90.00 | 76.00 | − | 92.25 | − | − |
| Technician Grade-II (Fitter) | 10 | 144.75 | 140.25 | 128.50 | 94.25 | 136.50 | 75.50 | 97.00 |
| Technician Grade-II (Instrument) | 12 | 91.50 | 84.75 | 75.25 | − | 84.50 | 66.00 | − |
Only the unreserved Staff Nurse line was published. The other columns are dashes, and the notice doesn't say why.
128.75 is 64.4 per cent, 62.75 marks above the 66-mark qualifying floor. Pharmacist, on the same paper structure, closed at 92.50, so Staff Nurse was 36.25 marks higher. These are raw marks; the only normalised line in the notice is Technician Grade-II Electrician (post code 11) at 142.96.
Preparation Tips
- Aim for about 130 out of 200, not 66. 128.75 took the post in 2021.
- Put most of your time into Part-I. It's 150 of 200 marks, and it breaks ties first.
- Revise your own diploma. The syllabus is your U.P. Nursing Council course, so your own notes and the council or university papers you sat are the closest thing to a model paper.
- Don't skip General Hindi. It's a real share of Part-II.
- Answer what you can narrow down. The quarter-mark penalty makes educated guesses worth it.
- Practise full papers at 54 seconds a question: 200 questions, 150 nursing and 50 general, three hours, with the penalty applied. A 100 question set won't teach you the pacing.
- Note your answers so you can use the three-day objection window.
- Get your documents in order before applying: completed diploma, council registration, category and UP domicile certificates. Nothing can be fixed after submission.
Sample Papers
No question paper has been released for this recruitment. The only Staff Nurse paper so far was held on 5 July 2021.
The answer key was put up on uprvunl.org for a few days after the paper, and a future key will appear on the recruitment notices page. Download it the day it appears; it isn't kept as a permanent file.
