WB JEE Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Eligibility, Important Dates
181 topics across 6 subjects. Every question carries a written explanation.
The West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination is the state entrance test for undergraduate Engineering, Technology, Pharmacy and Architecture in West Bengal, run by the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board (WBJEEB). The Board was set up in 1962 and works under the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board Act, 2014 (West Bengal Act XIV of 2014), which also gives it single-window counselling.
It's still an offline OMR exam, two papers on one day, when most other big entrance tests have gone computer based.
| What you appear in | What you get | What it admits you to |
|---|---|---|
| Paper I and Paper II | General Merit Rank (GMR) and Pharmacy Merit Rank (PMR) | All courses of Engineering and Pharmacy |
| Paper II only | PMR only | Pharmacy courses only, except at Jadavpur University |
| Paper I only | No rank at all | Nothing |
Sit only the Mathematics paper and you get no rank at all.
Mathematics is half the exam: 100 of the 200 marks and 75 of the 155 questions. Questions come in three categories that score differently, and the first tie-breaker is fewer negative marks, so accuracy matters as much as volume. Domicile rules decide which seats you can take. Details are in the sections below.

WB JEE Details
Exam Pattern
| Paper | Subjects | Timing on the day |
|---|---|---|
| Paper I | Mathematics | 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. |
| Paper II | Physics and Chemistry | 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. |
Three question categories
Every question has four options.
| Subject | Category 1 1 mark, minus 1/4 |
Category 2 2 marks, minus 1/2 | Category 3 2 marks, no negative |
Total questions | Total marks |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | 50 | 15 | 10 | 75 | 100 |
| Physics | 30 | 5 | 5 | 40 | 50 |
| Chemistry | 30 | 5 | 5 | 40 | 50 |
| Total | 110 | 25 | 20 | 155 | 200 |
| Category | How it works |
|---|---|
| Category 1 | Only one option is correct. Correct answer 1 mark; incorrect answer minus 1/4. Any combination of more than one option, even if it contains the correct one, is treated as incorrect and scores minus 1/4. Unattempted, zero. |
| Category 2 | Only one option is correct. Correct answer 2 marks; incorrect answer minus 1/2. The same rule on multiple markings applies. Unattempted, zero. |
| Category 3 | One or more options are correct. Marking all the correct options and nothing else gives 2 marks. Marking any incorrect option gives zero, however many correct ones you also marked. For a partially correct answer, meaning some correct options marked and no incorrect ones, the score is 2 × (number of correct options marked) / (total number of correct options). There is no negative marking in this category. Unattempted, zero. |
In Category 3, partial credit is real, but one wrong option among your marks zeroes the question.
Marking the OMR sheet
- Fill the circle completely with a blue or black ballpoint pen; the Board supplies it.
- No pencil, tick, cross, dot, ring, overwriting, scratching, erasing or white ink (prohibited), and nothing outside the circle. The sheet may be misread or cancelled, and the Board isn't responsible.
- Marks can't be changed once made.
Ranks
| General Merit Rank (GMR) | Pharmacy Merit Rank (PMR) | |
|---|---|---|
| Computed from | Total score in Paper I and Paper II together | Score in Paper II only, that is Physics and Chemistry |
| Admits to | All Engineering, Technology and Architecture courses, and the Pharmacy course at Jadavpur University | All other Pharmacy courses, including Pharm.D. |
Category ranks appear on the rank card, but counselling runs on GMR or PMR alone. If your category claim fails verification, your category rank is cancelled and you're treated as general; nobody else's rank changes.
Tie-break
GMR, in order:
- Fewer negative marks in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry together
- More positive marks in Mathematics and Physics together
- More positive marks in Mathematics and Chemistry together
- Fewer negative marks in Mathematics and Physics together
- Fewer negative marks in Mathematics and Chemistry together
- More positive marks in Mathematics, 2-mark questions only
- More positive marks in Physics, 2-mark questions only
- More positive marks in Chemistry, 2-mark questions only
- Fewer negative marks in Mathematics, 2-mark questions only
- Fewer negative marks in Physics, 2-mark questions only
- Fewer negative marks in Chemistry, 2-mark questions only
PMR: fewer negative marks in Physics and Chemistry together; more positive in Chemistry; fewer negative in Chemistry; then Chemistry 2-mark questions (positive, then negative); then Physics 2-mark questions (positive, then negative).
Still tied: the older candidate, then the lower application number.
Syllabus
The full subject-wise syllabus is an appendix to the WBJEE 2026 information bulletin. In the Board's words, the WBJEE syllabus is closely aligned with the Class 11 and 12 curricula of the recognised Indian Boards and Councils of Higher Secondary Education, and it emphasises conceptual clarity and numerical application.
What the Board says about each subject
| Subject | Questions and marks | Core topics, in the Board's words |
|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | 75 questions, 100 marks | Calculus, Algebra, Coordinate Geometry, Vectors, 3D Geometry, Probability and others. Mathematics has consistently been the most challenging section, requiring strong problem-solving skills and strict time management. |
| Physics | 40 questions, 50 marks | Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Electrostatics, Magnetic Effects of Current, Optics and Modern Physics. Questions range from moderate to difficult, with a heavy focus on numerical problems and conceptual clarity. |
| Chemistry | 40 questions, 50 marks | Inorganic Chemistry including Chemical Bonding and the p-block, Physical Chemistry including Equilibrium and Kinetics, and Organic Chemistry, with a focus on conceptual clarity. |
How detailed it is
It's a numbered chapter list with sub-topics. Mathematics opens at 1) Algebra: A.P., G.P., H.P. and runs through Logarithms, Complex Numbers, Polynomial Equation, Permutation and Combination, Principle of Mathematical Induction, Binomial Theorem, Matrices, Sets Relations and Mappings, Statistics and Probability, Trigonometry, Coordinate Geometry of Two Dimensions, Straight Lines, Circle and Conic Sections and on, down to items like De Moivre's theorem (statement only) and Inclusion and Exclusion formula for at most three sets. Where it says "statement only", "not more than 3 variables" or "m and n at most 3", that's the limit of what can be asked.
Eligibility Criteria
To sit WBJEE
- An Indian citizen, or an OCI with the Competent Authority's approval (OCI candidates get only unreserved All India quota seats).
- Passed 10+2 before 2026 or sitting it in 2026.
- At least 17 on 31 December 2026 (born on or before 31 December 2009). No upper age limit, except 25 on 31 December 2026 for degree-level Marine Engineering.
For Engineering and Technology admission
- 10+2 with subjects from the AICTE list (Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Electronics, Information Technology, Biology, Informatics Practices, Biotechnology, a Technical Vocational subject, Agriculture, Engineering Graphics, Business Studies, Entrepreneurship) in the combinations in Table 8.4 of the AICTE Approval Process Handbook.
- 45 per cent in the three qualifying subjects together; 40 per cent for SC, ST, OBC-A, OBC-B and PwD.
- English passed with at least 30 per cent.
- Passed theory and practical in all the subjects. Or the D.Voc. stream in the same or allied sector.
Universities can set stricter rules; the Board posts them before counselling.
Domicile
You must be domiciled in West Bengal for:
- Any seat, general included, in a Government-aided Engineering, Technology or Pharmacy college.
- Any seat in B.Tech. (Dairy Technology) at West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences.
- 90 per cent of the general seats at Jadavpur University.
- Every reserved seat (SC, ST, OBC-A, OBC-B, PwD, TFW, EWS) anywhere.
- Aliah University, a state government university.
Domicile means 10 years' continuous residence in West Bengal as on 31 December 2025 (proforma A1 or A2), or parents who are permanent residents (proforma B, or any two of their Voter ID, Aadhaar, passport or ration card with a West Bengal address, in original).
- Certificates from elected representatives aren't accepted: not from a Municipal Commissioner, Councillor, Panchayat or GTA member, MLA or MP. It must come from a listed executive, police, judicial or secretariat officer, with full name, designation, address and phone.
- SC, ST and OBC candidates can use their West Bengal category certificate instead, but if that fails verification, the domicile claim fails too.
Reservation
- For SC, ST, OBC-A, OBC-B, PwD, TFW and EWS, in proportions that vary by institute, declared before counselling.
- Non-creamy-layer OBC only, with an updated NCL certificate at counselling.
- Only for Indian citizens domiciled in West Bengal.
- OBC-A and OBC-B reservation is subject to SLP (C) Nos. 017751-017755 of 2024, against the Calcutta High Court judgment of 22 May 2024.
- EWS follows Higher Education Department memos of 26 May 2023 and 18 September 2023 under the Constitution (103rd Amendment) Act, 2019.
Persons with disability
- Benchmark disability of at least 40 per cent under the RPwD Act, 2016.
- 40 per cent off the application fee, by written request to the Chairman before the last date.
- Twenty minutes per hour compensatory time, and a scribe or reader if needed. Apply in writing at least 60 days before the exam.
- These arrangements are only at the Board's office in Kolkata.
Defence quota
Thirteen supernumerary seats for wards of Defence personnel (Government Order of 9 June 2016). Apply to the Rajya Sainik Board through the Zila Sainik Board or your unit, with an attested WBJEE admit card. Allotment is by offline counselling.
Selection Process
You download your own rank card; WBJEEB publishes no rank or score list. Everyone who sits gets a rank card, but only those above the Board's cut-off rank or score get a rank and can join counselling. Ranks and tie-breaks are under the exam pattern.
Counselling
- Centralised online e-counselling, notified shortly after the result. The course-wise and institute-wise seat matrix (with last year's) comes out first. Some institutes keep seats outside e-counselling, and those won't appear in the matrix.
- Decentralised counselling (DCAP) for the seats still vacant.
DCAP-2026
New for 2026, notified on 30 July 2026 after a Director of Technical Education memo of 29 July 2026. It replaces institute-by-institute offline mop-up rounds. The DCAP summary and FAQ has the full rules.
| Category | Who |
|---|---|
| I | West Bengal-domiciled WBJEE-2026 rank holders eligible for reserved-category seats |
| II | West Bengal-domiciled candidates eligible on their WBJEE-2026 rank |
| III | WBJEE-2026 rank holders not domiciled in West Bengal |
| IV | JEE (Main) 2026 rank holders |
| V | Eligible 10+2 merit candidates |
- ₹250 to register (non-refundable); ₹2,000 seat acceptance fee after you lock an option.
- Choices are unordered. You save and lock eligible combinations; unlocked choices lock automatically at the deadline.
- The Combined Merit List isn't an allotment, and there's no waiting list.
- From the Allocation or Selection List you can lock only ONE option.
- An offered option you don't take in time is gone for the rest of DCAP, and taking one makes the others lapse.
- Pay and then fail to report, and you're debarred immediately from all counselling.
- An existing admission stays safe until a new one is confirmed.
Round 1: lock one option, pay, download the provisional receipt, report with originals and get confirmed. Selecting without completing admission doesn't carry you into Round 2. Round 2 uses the same frozen choices, no changes; a combination already offered in Round 1 isn't offered again.
| Situation | Consequence |
|---|---|
| On the merit list, but no selection opportunity | No non-response is recorded. |
| A selection opportunity received but no option exercised | The offered combinations lapse, and the phase may count as one non-response phase |
| Actual opportunities ignored in two consecutive phases | Debarment from all subsequent phases |
| Seat acceptance fee paid but candidate fails to report | Immediate debarment; an earlier valid admission, if any, stays protected |
| Verified technical, system or payment failure | Not a non-response, where timely action is established by official records |
| Voluntary withdrawal after a confirmed DCAP admission | Exit from subsequent rounds and phases; the seat returns to the vacancy pool |
An admission can be replaced only once, in the next phase. Admitted in Phase 1? You must take part in Phase 2 to replace it; you can't skip to Phase 3. The Board says it doesn't rank any institution or programme as better or worse.
Salary
WBJEE is an admission test, so there's no pay scale. The Tuition Fee Waiver (TFW) helps with cost:
- For students domiciled in West Bengal with total family income below ₹2.50 lakh a year.
- Covers tuition only.
- TFW is a reserved category with its own rank, so seats are won on merit.
- The income certificate must be on the Board's proforma, signed by an Assistant Secretary or above, a District Magistrate, Additional District Magistrate, Sub-Divisional Officer or Block Development Officer; not by any elected representative.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| WBJEE application fee, General | ₹500 male, ₹400 female, ₹300 third gender |
| WBJEE application fee, SC, ST, OBC-A, OBC-B, EWS, PwD, TFW | ₹400 male, ₹300 female, ₹200 third gender |
| Answer key or response challenge | ₹500 per question |
| Calculation sheet from the Board | ₹500 by demand draft |
| Duplicate rank card or admit card | ₹500 each by bank draft |
| DCAP registration fee | ₹250, non-refundable |

How to Apply
Online at wbjeeb.in: registration, application, image upload, payment, confirmation page.
| Category | Male | Female | Third gender |
|---|---|---|---|
| General | ₹500 | ₹400 | ₹300 |
| SC, ST, OBC-A, OBC-B, EWS, PwD, TFW | ₹400 | ₹300 | ₹200 |
Net banking, card, UPI or QR code, with no bank service charge. Not refundable. PwD candidates can claim 40 per cent off by writing to the Chairman with the confirmation page and certificate before the last date.
- Name, father's name, mother's name, domicile and date of birth can never be corrected. Everything else only in the correction window, by you. Make it match your school records exactly.
- Photograph: JPG or JPEG, 10 to 200 KB. Signature: 4 to 30 KB. Unclear images mean no admit card.
- The application isn't complete until the confirmation page is generated. Download it; it's gone after the exam.
- Lost password: use Forgot Password, the only route. Don't share it.
- Pick exam zones in order of preference. Centres aren't changed on request, and a low-enrolment zone can be cancelled.
- At counselling, institutes want originals. Phone photos of the screen aren't accepted; use the portal's PRINT link.
Participating Institutes
Universities and government, government-aided and self-financing institutes across West Bengal. The Participating Institutions list is on wbjeeb.in, and the seat matrix comes out before counselling each year with the previous year's for comparison. Seats an institute keeps outside e-counselling won't appear in it.
| Institute | The rule |
|---|---|
| Jadavpur University | 90 per cent of the general category seats require West Bengal domicile. And its Pharmacy course is the one pharmacy course admitted on the GMR rather than the PMR, so a candidate who sat Paper II alone cannot take it |
| Aliah University | A State Government university, so the West Bengal domicile requirement applies |
| West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences | B.Tech. (Dairy Technology) requires West Bengal domicile for any seat |
| Every Government-aided Engineering, Technology and Pharmacy college | West Bengal domicile is required for any seat, including a general category seat |
All India quota seats are open without West Bengal domicile; OCI candidates can take only the unreserved ones. DCAP-2026 also opened leftover seats to JEE (Main) 2026 rank holders and 10+2 merit candidates.
Exam Centres
The exam runs in district-wise zones across West Bengal, listed in the bulletin. You choose zones in order of preference and the Board allots a centre, possibly outside your choices if it must. No centre changes. A zone can be cancelled for low enrolment.
Candidates with compensatory time or a scribe sit at the Board's office in Kolkata; those facilities aren't available elsewhere. Apply 60 days ahead.
Bring a printed admit card; a mutilated, deformed or filthy one may disqualify you. Paper I runs 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and Paper II 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on the same day, so expect about five hours at the centre. All disputes fall under Kolkata jurisdiction only.

The correction window, admit card, answer keys, OMR images, result and counselling schedule are each notified separately on wbjeeb.in.
Admit Card
Download and print it from wbjeeb.in on the notified date with your application number and password. Bring the printout, flat and clean. Unclear photos or a missing confirmation page mean no admit card.
The confirmation page, admit card and rank card show what you typed; the Board doesn't vouch for it, and everything is checked at the institute. A duplicate rank card or admit card costs a ₹500 bank draft per document, until counselling ends or 60 days after the result.
Download and keep the confirmation page (gone after the exam), and the rank card and OMR image (gone after counselling).
Result
- Model answer keys go up on wbjeeb.in briefly after the exam. Challenge any key at ₹500 per question; the Board then posts Final and Frozen Answer Keys.
- Your OMR image and machine-read responses are also posted briefly. You can challenge the read responses at ₹500 per question.
- Online challenges only; email, letter, fax and phone aren't accepted.
The rank card shows your ranks, total score and Paper I and II scores. There's no public rank list.
Disputing your score
- Email info@wbjeeb.in within 24 hours of the result with your OMRs, rank card, booklet number and series code, and a question-wise score calculation. Or appear in person by noon the next working day. Nothing is heard after that.
- A calculation sheet from the Board costs a ₹500 demand draft, available for 60 days after the result or until counselling ends, whichever is later.
Cut Off
WBJEEB publishes no rank or score list, so there's no official closing-rank table, and none is released after counselling either. Any WBJEE cut-off table you see elsewhere didn't come from the Board.
The Board sets a cut-off rank or score below which no rank is given; your rank card tells you whether you cleared it. There's no published qualifying mark. Closing ranks come out of each counselling round; the seat matrix is posted on wbjeeb.in before counselling, around June and July.
Preparation Tips
- Weight Mathematics like the paper does: half the marks and its own two hours. The Board calls it consistently the hardest section.
- Know the three categories. In Categories 1 and 2, attempt when you can narrow to two; a blind guess loses marks and hurts the first tie-breaker. Never leave a Category 3 blank: mark only options you're sure of and stop. Those 20 questions are 40 marks with no downside.
- Practise on paper OMR sheets with a ballpoint, sitting both papers on one day with an hour between. Fill circles fully, don't change marks, and keep checking your answer number matches the question.
- Use the syllabus appendix as a checklist, and note its limits ("statement only", "at most 3").
- Sit both papers unless you only want pharmacy. Paper I alone gives no rank.
- Get your paperwork right before the result: domicile from a listed officer (not an MLA, MP, Councillor or Panchayat member), updated OBC NCL, TFW income certificate on the Board's proforma.
- Download everything while it's up: confirmation page, OMR image, rank card. Score grievances close 24 hours after the result.
Sample Papers
WBJEEB doesn't publish past question papers. After each exam it posts model answer keys, the final and frozen keys and your own OMR image for a short time on wbjeeb.in, usually in the weeks after the May exam.
The information bulletin has the full syllabus and the scoring rules for each question category.
